  2. Toffee feels a sudden wave of sadness wash over her, grieving over another soldier in the rat wars, even if they did not particularly get along near the end.

Aether, meanwhile, somewhat expected this- the poor man's health had been fading.. Her head hangs heavy all the while, either way- wondering what is to come of the children he left behind? She only wishes that she was kinder to the Hyspian near the end of his life...

The Wizard's murine apprentice cheers along, a fine Owynium orb in her hand. "H-hear hear! D-death, ah.. death to the time pig..!"

An argument that I often see in lore is: "why are you complaining? it's harmless!" I'm not saying that this is the argument you're perpetuating, because that's not entirely the case, but I thought that this thread was a relevant place to bring it up.

Although harmless additions are harmless additions, I think it's important to keep a sense of core concept and unchangeable "red-lines" in mind when writing anything that expands on a magic/existing lore piece. An example of this is how the current Aura lore that @Sybbyl0127wrote allows for multi-color auras. Yes, it's "harmless," but it compromises several years of precedent. The "appeal to tradition" argument isn't always valid, but breaking these established rules isn't good for long term world building, even if the change is "harmless."

The rule broken in this submission is obviously the fact that spells cannot remain unattended by a Mage unless means of Transfiguration or Obelisks are used—both of which are not present in this lore.

This sort of thing is also already possible with a MArt submission too.

Not throwing any shade, and I apologize if I come off as abrasive, but I wanted to use this as a plug to express that a harmless addition isn't inherently good just because it's "harmless."

Yea, no, I get that. I'm more stating in that post that it's less 'oh it's harmless' and more I'll leave it up to the ST to decide if my knowledge of the void is, just, absolute garbage. Though, I was not aware that Obelisks were needed to keep spells unattended. I will write that in the lore shortly. Thank you.

Edit: Actually, after looking over this piece, there's a lot of garbage mistakes I didn't catch in the writing phase so I think I'm just going to self-deny this.

It’s an interesting idea though I don’t think it makes much sense lore-wise because a mage would need to remain connected for the air barriers to remain floating. Also, air evocation doesn’t necessarily allow for conjured air to be a solid force-I feel like if any evocation we’re to fit this spell it would be Earth evocation, though again, a mage would need to remain connected in order to maintain the spell, else the barrier would fall. Lastly, in relation to the dyeing of the blocks/barriers, the color of conjured air/wind is the color of the mages aura and seeing (as I stated previously) as conjured air is not a solid force, there wouldn’t really be no way for it to be dyed a different color.

Like I said, my science is absolute bullshit and if ST feels like it doesn't fit by all means, deny it. I more wrote this in as a precaution so no crazed people take away the cute little barrier block bridges i've seen in a lot of unique builds recently. Though maybe I'm just being paranoid and no mod would actually take away little build details for the sake of continuity. Right?

Thanks for the feedback though, taught me a few things I didn't know about voidal magic

  7. ST please self-deny this it's full of mistakes

    Spoiler

OOC: I got bored and wanted to try writing a spell.

This is a spell that I thought should be included so mages could have stuff like floating clouds you could walk on, or invisible bridges, or interesting arcane force-fields physically built into lairs, without some pedantic nerd complaining that it’s not ‘lore-friendly’ later on, given that ST said we don’t have a magic for this.

It essentially gives permission to using barrier blocks or walkable clouds in builds like these a second time. It’s like the soulstone flavor spell from Transfiguration.
I’m also aware that Mystics can kind of do this already but I think the ability to include something as simple this in your build shouldn’t be relegated to one of the hardest to get magics.
And yes, I’m aware that my ‘science’ for this is nonsense.

Air Barrier [N] - A feat commonly used by mages to enhance the look and feel of their lairs while showing off their immense skill, Air Barrier allows one to create a barrier out of thin air- not just a simple gust, but one that genuinely feels and acts like a solid material, capable of blocking passage just as any building material would.

    Mechanics

    Spoiler
    • Air Barriers are formed through a simple ritual in which an extremely strong, albeit very thin and condensed, gust of air forms an invisible ‘outline’ of an object- within which an Air Evocationist continuously conjures air. Eventually, the air inside will be so unbelievably dense that it cannot be passed through- yet, still remains a gas, and kept within the given ‘bounds’ by the conjured gust of air.
    • You can ‘dye’ an air barrier on the last emote step to give it the appearance of a colored cloud.
    • They are essentially a more lore-friendly way to have things like floating clouds you can walk on, invisible bridges, or small force fields in game. It can never be created in combat.

Steps: Connect to void > Create outline > Fill / Dye

    • No particular emote count, as the spell is non-combative and ritual.

    Emote Example:

Johnston’s eyes would flare with a bright aura, as he focused on the empty chasm before him- a space to renovate for the Mages’ Guild, a place for an invisible bridge.
[!] He focused hard, holding his palms in the general direction of the bridge, beginning to kneel. He began to conjure a thought in his mind- a 1 by 2 by 5 meter vertical, from one end to the other… 10 cubic meters total. He begins to conjure a thick gust, creating an unseen vacuum at the location- a sort of invisible envelope.
[!] The air mage sits for the next 50 minutes or so conjuring air into the outline from his fingertips. As the guild ordered for the chasm to appear like a purple cloud- the man drops dust, water, and crushed ochril to give it a hue akin to manite. After it is all said and done, there is a smokey fuschia cloud between the two sides of the pit- one would sink into the mist slightly, but at the thick of it find themselves standing on perplexingly solid ground.

    Redlines

    Spoiler
    • Tier 5.
    • Follows all air conjuration and evocation redlines.
    • Creating air barriers can’t be done in combat or anywhere near combat- this spell is simply an avenue to create more interesting, but lore-friendly, ‘magical’ builds.
    • There is no set emote count as this is a non-combative ritual spell.
    • You can only really cast this spell where you can build, and as such, must have permission to build..
    • For every 1 block created, 5 narrative minutes must pass. However, given the nature of the spell, you may ‘timeskip’ after you have started to ‘fill’ the space with dense wind for larger barriers- for example after you have reached the ‘filling’ casting step of a 10-block large bridge, you can say something along the lines of ‘50 minutes later…’ if no one objects.
    • Dispelling takes the same amount of time, and involves slowly depressurizing the cube.
    • You may talk or eat during casting, and take short breaks of your own volition, but any physical harm will pause the spell.
    • Air barriers remain in the world even after the mage who created them has long passed, but they can be destroyed.
    • Air barriers do not adhere to gravity. They levitate in-place where they were created, and can hold things atop them.
    • Air barriers must be represented with physical blocks. For visible air barriers, use blocks that look like the cloud- different colors and opacities may be used for flair- such as wool, stained glass, glass, et cetera. For invisible air barriers, you can use barrier blocks. After creating one, modreq to have it placed down- just as one would modreq petty theft or petty vandalism.
    • Standard build rules apply- there must be some way, whether it be an open space or an iron door, to get into any area. You also need region owner permission to destroy force barriers in most circumstances, as it counts as vandalism.
    • Air barriers (when allowed) can be destroyed by abjuration, other Air Evocationists, or a force strong enough to break stone.
    • Destroying an air barrier does not cause it to explode- it will simply vanish in a gust of wind.
