So! Is everyone still enjoying the new map? :)

Y'know I really miss Anthos. Say what you will about RP being too spread out and the map being too big, but it was a god damn beautiful map in my opinion,

Don't PM magic teachers, asking them to teach you. In many cases, it's a good way to make sure none of them will wanna teach you. If you want your character to learn magic, let it grow naturally out of rp. It may take a long time, but it'll prove you have the dedication and an rp foundation.

that asking someone who's never seen you rp before for magic is about like asking a complete stranger for a loaded gun. You wouldn't expect that stranger (if he was a responsible gun owner) to just hand you his gun. Of course, many new players probably don't realize that magic can be so easily abused, so maybe those of us who teach it should make more of an effort to make the aware of that if/when we say no.

That's understandable, but new players also should realize that magic is easily abused, and it's better to make sure a player understands how to rp properly before they learn. That way, they don't need to be blacklisted for bad rp after picking up magic before even developing their rp. I agree that the blacklist should be enforced, but I think it's better to prevent spilling milk, rather than cleaning it up afterwards. I think it was blundermore who said that asking someone wh...

to one end, and magic gets outta control. We swing to the other and people feel the need to go to ooc methods. I suppose all I'm really saying is don't let it be the first resort, or don't be so quick. In a situation in which someone has really tried to substantially rp their way to it, it's a bit more understandable, but you'd be amazed how many of the PM's I get are from people who just made their character that day, and wanna be a shaman right off the bat.

I'd certainly agree with your "two extremes" statement, pie. The tendency of the server (and people in general) seems to be a bit of a pendulum effect. If some compromise could be reached, it'd be great, but the likelihood of this many people ever agreeing on a system that actually works is low. It's pretty much the same as the combat default argument, I guess. We swing to one side, and rp'ers get mad. We swing to the other and tick off pvp'ers. Likewise, we swing...

They can find a magic teacher exactly the same way I did on both of my characters: by rp'ing. I never asked to learn magic ooc'ly or ic'ly. It was offered to me because of my rp. On the second of the two occasions, it was offered by someone with whom I had not even met before, which was a bit of a gamble on his part in my opinion; but he doesn't regret it. I won't disagree that the system is flawed, but simply making it a free-for-all is a bad idea.

I'd say it's a smarter idea than letting every little kid and his grandma start shooting fire and lightning outta their hands without any real knowledge of how to roleplay it properly, or even so much as a little bit of reasonable rp background. That's how we ended up with a certain white wizard who thought he could connect to the void instantly after waking from an unconscious state, and start conjuring up a thunderstorm.

I suppose if you were able to write a tome with such complete knowledge of the subject, so as to give a firm enough understanding that it could replace a teacher, it's be conceivable. I'd say trying to learn magic from a book would be a terrible idea though. Magic isn't meant to be something that you can just attain as easily as buying dimestore candy. I tend to shy away from self-teaching in general, book or no book. It just seems like trying to learn without a proper teacher lea...

Is the server having the same broken wire problem as the other day? It seems even worse.
