Briefly explain the lore behind this construct or creature:

    Introduction

Not every soul will enter the Soulstream upon death. Particularly traumatic, unexpected, tragic, or otherwise unfortunate deaths can result in a soul latching onto the material world. They will fail to realize the state they have found themselves in, becoming a spectral Phantom that continues to linger. These newly formed Phantoms are called Revenants.

    Various Phantoms

All Phantoms are affected by the sun; Revenants, for example, are left feeling uncomfortable at first, though it will gradually develop into a searing burn. Ultimately, this encourages them towards nightly haunts. They are all composed of Ectoplasm, an ethereal substance often utilized by Mystics for a variety of purposes- it is directly affected by voidal magics, aurum, and forms of deific magic, allowing Phantoms to be harmed easily when attacked by such things. When cut down with aurum or eliminated by these magics, the Phantom's Ectoplasm will break down and demanifest, as if they had died, though they will reform elsewhere. Revenants are, naturally, the weakest and most vulnerable form of Phantom; they are easily injured and take noticeably longer to regenerate; where Specters and Poltergeists require a single day, Revenants require two.

    Revenants

Revenants are the first stage in a Phantom’s development; a temporary and brittle state where they fail to comprehend the manner of their death, or that they had died at all. They possess a small range abilities, allowing them to manipulate light objects and tamper with the world around them, or to manipulate their appearance and visibility to normal descendants. Every Revenant is visibly afflicted in some fashion to resemble the manner of their death- a man who suffered from immense blood loss may have exceptionally gaunt features in the afterlife, for example, or their wound may be visibly ‘bloodied’. They also tend towards muted colors when visible to ordinary descendants, seeming faint and greyscale, and sometimes difficult to distinguish. In addition, all manner of Phantoms suffer mentally as a result of their unexpected or violent deaths; most often this is represented by waves of paranoia and minor schizophrenia, depression, or any other manner of mental illness to convey their volatile state. As Revenants progress, they will eventually come to realize the nature of their undeath and seek to understand. They can then inflict a particular curse to sap their victims until they can carefully attempt introspection. If they come to terms with their death, they will have the opportunity to become a peaceful specter. If they find themselves vehemently denying it, they will become a violent poltergeist.

    Specters

The nature of Specters is selfless and often benevolent, they are still undergoing the trials of undeath and have developed remarkable clarity, but their path lies unfinished. Specters are rarely prone to violence, usually preferring to escape at the first opportunity. They are largely unaffected by the sun compared to other types of Phantoms. These peaceful spirits have a multitude of abilities, and are much more practiced than their confused or angry counterparts; they can radiate an aura of positivity for nearby descendants to calm themselves within, influence light objects at range, shift between docile animalistic forms, possess objects in a passive and neutral manner, adjust their visibility, and become completely corporeal, allowing ordinary descendants and weapons to affect their form. They may also choose a location to become their ‘Sanctuary,’ surrendering themselves to persist only in that space, but gaining a certain amount of omnipresence to any who enter the area. Specters can range from incredibly white, blue, or even yellow shades, and typically share no indication of how they died; they appear unsettlingly picturesque.

    Poltergeists

Poltergeists, on the other hand, have found themselves outraged by their death; they seek to manifest their anger by any means necessary, often lashing out against any who stray into their haunts. They lack the ability to think rationally in most cases, ravaged psychologically by their mental disorders. They have greatly tuned abilities to manipulate the physical world, allowing them to move objects, manifest themselves directly into the physical world, shift into predatory animals, invoke a sense of unease or faint fear in those around them, possess objects or people to puppet them as though it were their own body, or surrender themselves to a specific area, like Specters, to limit their abilities to one zone, but become much more powerful while within it. They are primarily red or black in appearance, which is likely paired with many abhorrent injuries or viscera.

    Ectoplasm

The ghostly substance that every Phantom is composed of. It comes in many forms, colors, and consistencies. Initially, it is difficult for Phantoms to maintain any sense of control, though as they progress in age and practice, it will become far easier. Ectoplasm is most often used by Mystics, and is invisible to the ordinary Descendent unless under certain circumstances, such as a ghost willing themselves to be seen. As mentioned, all Phantoms can be injured when their Ectoplasm comes into contact with aurum, voidal magics, and deific magics.

If this construct or creature has some form of aesthetic choice, can you describe how they look?

As an older remnant, Nicholas is incredibly wispy; his ectoplasm is muted, unpronounced and faint. He is fully clad in a set of old Imperial armor, though it provides no protective benefit whatsoever – shearing apart at its spectral seams whenever affected. The left edge of his breastplate and his left pauldron are streaked with rust, indicating a cause of death.

A notably tired Mali’aheral was resting in his study when he had begun reading over the document. By the time he had finished peering over its pages, he had already risen and wandered halfway across the chamber. He sought out a copy of the very same missive that had successfully unveiled the imminent threat of warlocks and frost-witches within Fenn’s very own walls.

He placed down the compilation of leather-bound parchments and began penning out an updated variant; though, this time, he wiped the slate clean and began to log only the identities of relevant creatures and dark mages.

“I had expected to slay more than a halfling warlock cowering beside the cathedral. Perhaps its finally time to venture towards the lairs of these beings and beat them back before they’ve another chance to regain their footing,”  he said to nobody in particular.

  7. I’d suggest adding in a small variety of strengths between genders, such as noting the maximum strength of a female and maximum strength of a male. Very minor, but probably helpful so there’s a distinct difference between the strengths of the two. Biologically, a man is more likely to have increased strength in comparison, whereas a female is more lithe, and so on.

So what are you doing to fix the response times my dude? How much have you learned in the five days you logged onto LOTC and had a playtime of a couple of hours?

And you’re sure as hell not a good forum moderator with an attitude like this my dude.

Also, I like the lore piece, but... how would roleplay be done? Like sure, the ones using sputes could rp on the coastal shore just fine, but this is an entirely aquatic race. Are you going to build their cities underwater? If so, how will outsiders get to rp with them? Are you hoping the Dev team gives the Shuul race aquatic buffs and unlimited water breathing?

The only way I can see this CA being viable is if either

    A) It picks up a TON of activity and is widely popular, thus making underwater roleplay active enough so that rp can occur in the first place, along with the fact that the above character buff are also given, or

    B) The shuuls become semi-aquatic and begin to colonize the shore after some sort of thing wipes out their underwater habitat, and the lore is reworked in order to make this doable.

I really do like the lore piece for what it is, but I don’t see it working out too well if implemented, unless some changes are made to where there is more land rp going on than underwater rp. Fish people are neat, and I love amphibious races in fantasy games, like Zoras or Argonians, but I really just don’t see how they could work on lotc.

    Edit:

Another thing. Why does romance have to be a possibility for everything? It just gives us weird... fish fetish ftb scenes. Make it something more interesting. What if they’re asexuals and can lay a fertilized egg all on their own when they’re ready for childbirth, and a roll is made to determine whether or not the egg’s occupant survives? A whole new avenue of rp can be made with such an addition.

Shuuls could be seen as a suitable slave race, not for labor, but as a source of food, since ever shuul can lay eggs.

A feral species of shuul could be added who do not control when they lay their self-fertilized eggs, which create a population explosion of these ferals, and the civilized shuul could be described as fighting them back rather often. Maybe hunting the excess ferals is a sport, maybe cannibalizing their corpses becomes common.

I absolutely love this lorepiece and find myself looking forward to if the LT decide to accept it or not. I’m hoping they do, because underwater RP is something I hadn’t even considered before this and it sounds absolutely awesome.

Flipping over to my response to Kiaus though....

There’s already a buff to some creatures/races that allows them to breathe underwater. Wights, for example, have an innate ability (upon setting the creature on their character card) to not have the need to eat and don’t lose the little bubbles when they’re underwater. I imagine something similar could be created for these lads, since it’s just a solid copy-paste and minor edit so they can eat instead.

The, uh... breeding things. Wholeheartedly agree, since it’d make sense for the creature to instead lay eggs. Maybe have a 1/100 roll like elves – though, rather than having it be 95+ or whatever, it’d instead be 75+ for a fertilized egg. I like the concept of ferals being borne and causing a mess for the other Shuul, since it’d give an innate conflict for them to deal with; assuming it was RP’d properly, a lot of different solutions could be made. Hell, they could probably try to employ these ferals as mutts to help with on-shore raiding. Places like Sutica, which are ripe hotspots for water-centric RP, could become an area they’re at odds with. Ship attacks and the like would be interesting too, I’d love to see some water-creatures come up from the depths and strike at a fishing vessel.

Flipping over to the bit you mentioned with activity, I’m confident the lore could be modified so that Shuul can build up a natural trait to survive in fresh water. Having a small settlement located /in/ a river would be pretty neat to see, especially if they create caves that lead into the surrounding riverbeds for minor housing and temples. This could also lead to interaction with civilizations further inside the continent, whilst also limiting the population because a deep river could only support so many large, sentient creatures.

At the end of the day though, with a few minor tweaks (because it’s safe to say, the LT will definitely want some number of edits for whatever reasons – something we’ve probably missed) this could be an interesting creature with a lot of depth and plenty of fun interactions for the different playerbases.

I’m not sure if it was noted in the lore itself, but are these creatures capable of magic? I’d assume not, but I’m asking since my small brain really doesn’t want to ctrl-f it right now. Having magic may be a negative thing for them since the physical capabilities of these creatures is such an important factor for their daily lives both on land and in the water.

    Big +1 anyway, hell yeah
