The Horse Breeds of The Weiss

To be the closest ally we have got,

So when again you mount your steed,

Do not forget how they bleed.

Historically, we Weiss have revered the art of war and, once upon a time, that of cavalry. Our companionship with horses was started by the indomitable spirit of the hussar-turned-lord marshal, Felix Weiss. We have taken great pride in our specially bred horses: on full display, we take to our stark white steeds - Comets that race across the land. It is to his legacy that we all aspire, his hussarian oath engraved in the very warhammer left to us who remain so that we may not be permitted to forget the humble roots whence we came.

This breed of horse, the White Comet, rapidly took hold in Aevos after the loss of our Zvaervauld Great and Lesser Horses back in the land of Almaris. From the dutiful hand of Ser Audo Weiss, the Zvaervauld Great Horse was born and by his hand, too, were borne the White Comet and Mityan Striders. His dutiful son, Lord Viktor Weiss, with the aid of the late Lord Marus Weiss, further maintained the contemporary horse stock. Between their minds and dedication, they have given us the final breed to date: the Black Comets.

This shall aim to summarise the current collection of Weiss breeds for the sake of historical record, and to remind that what happened to our prior breeds ought not be permitted to happen again.

The White Comet

The once premium steed upon our lands, The White Comet, is a proud yet graceful creature. With large hooves to fill, they have a strict regimen of training. However, the White Comet has benefitted from the experience gained from their predecessors: dangerously intelligent yet kindly in nature, they make for exceptional partners on the battlefield. Acting as an extension of one's self, a properly trained and maintained compaion will react quickly and decisively to commands.

Named after the old mythological figure ‘Tova’, The White Comet, the breed is said to give prosperity and luck to those in battle, to let them and their steed be the last alive on the battlefield in victory.

Standing at an average of 16 hands height, there is little difference in the morphology between males and females. As their name suggests, each white comet must have a distinct and unmarred pearlescent coat, along with their mane. Typically, the grace and elegance of the breed is captured by the curls which gently roll through its mane.  Their hooves lack any feathering, and a noticeable dip follows along their spine.

However, they are not free from a horse's inherently prey nature. Like other horses, they can and will be spooked by strange and unpredictable noises and sights. To avoid this, the White Comets are subject to intense training before sale to acclimatise them to loud noises, unexpected contact and rider error. Resulting from this are hardy, cooperative and fierce war horses. 

*New horse owners are advised that intelligent horses require a firm hand, lest they decide that they are in control.

The Mityan Strider

Named after the Mare of the East, ‘Mityan’, these horses are not truly intended for battle but are more suited to work.  However, they are sure to prove efficient and effective at their tasks.

Mityan Striders are a category of work horse. Each Mityan Strider takes a draft-like build with feathered hooves. Their primarily heavy and hefty build makes them exceptional at work which requires them to move heavy loads, making them dutiful in the rolling Haeseni fields. In line with their large build they, at average, stand roughly 18 hands high, but rarely some individuals have been known to reach 20 hands high: truly monstrous proportions.

Lacking the intelligence of the White Comets, Mityan Striders are far more easy to handle by inexperienced hands though their sheer size lends significant danger to any mishandling. While they are often inherently more friendly, it is strongly advised that any buyer maintain wariness about such hefty steeds, and treat them with the due respect called for regardless of their intended purpose.

The Fallen Comets

Fallen Comets vary widely in coat, coming in browns, greys, blacks and whites with a myriad of markings. Along with their varied coats, they have varied ability with some proving exceptionally swift, while others carry larger than average bulk. In order to best suit Fallen Comets to their potential roles, they are largely generalised into three categories, which are listed in more depth below.

Fallen Comets stand with well-proportioned features, pronounced withers, a notably straight profile and a deep chest. Similar to certain thoroughbred builds, their bone structure is hardy and is a defining feature in their further sub-labels:

• Massive-type tend to be large and rough. Those with oriental-type structures are the most appealing by far. Overall, they are better suited to carriage-driving and herd-keeping than war though the oriental-like ones can perform exceptionally.
• Oriental-type are lighter and more elegant. Somewhat more fussy and demanding, they tend to demand more of their handlers in training and feed.
• Agile-type are well-muscled but largely athletic overall. They typically out-pace other Fallen Comets.

The Black Comet

Black Comets serve as a contrasting counterpart to White Comets, and were named after the black Comet ‘Ybis’ before they became the Fallen Comet.  Much like their namesake, they are profoundly brave when well-handled.

Upon looking into our own horse history, the lost Zvaervauld Great Horse was said to be as black as night and as fierce as a lion. In an effort to capture a glimpse of the past, a programme was undertaken to create something similar, resulting in  the Black Comet. Generally this breed proves gentle, calm and eager to learn, making them somewhat more easy to maintain than White Comets.

Fit to be a destrier, these  horses stand between 15 and 17 hands high. They are powerfully muscled at a glance, and bare subtle feathering upon their feet. Bearing long, arching necks and short, stocky ears their profile can appear quite striking. Their manes and low-set tails are generally wavy naturally, albeit a braided style of mane is often how they are first sold. 

Owing to their naturally high step, these horses are trained with an extra, loft gait between a trot and a gallop known as a ‘tolt’. This unique step makes them quite the show-horse, and a smooth comfortable ride.

*Black Comets require a firm and experienced hand to be properly maintained for their battle and show prowess.

Given our extensive breeding programmes, the diversity of Weiss horses far exceeds all else on the market. 

White Comets, Black Comets, Mityan Striders and Fallen Comets are sold at The Foundry in New Valdev. While White Comets are considered a premium breed, Mityan Striders will always be sold at a competitive price and of varied capability to suit your requirements.

The fiend, known as Sermi, who was taken in, fed and given work by the Crown has sinned again. She wishes to curse our children, the future of Haense with whatever foul magics she has at her disposal. Herein, I lay forth a petition before the Crown and Duma. 

I petition that the Brotherhood of Saint Karl take an aggressive stance on these demons and initiate hunts and bring these demons to the flames, whether they be found within Haeseni lands, or the broader Aevos. Sermi has made it clear that these cursed spawn can not be trusted, and it seems the only solution is to hunt them down beyond our borders. Let no child of Haense be afflicted by these curses again.

Tragedy has once more struck the House of Baruch. Let this missive serve to announce that Her Grace, Roslin Baruch, Duchess of Valwyck passed into Godan’s hands on the 10th Day of Vzmey ag Hyff in the year 517 E.S. The ailing Duchess had retired from public view in recent months in light of her dwindling health, and was attended by family and loved ones in her final days.

It was her Grace’s most fervent wish to witness the birth of her grandson before her death – a wish that merciful Godan granted. After a long and arduous labour, Lady Alexandra Baruch welcomed a son into this world. The late Duchess blessed the boy Petyr Jan Baruch as the sun began to fall, and her last rites were performed as the final remnants of light disappeared from the sky over Valdev. Her Grace passed peacefully, surrounded by her surviving progeny.

A Forsaken Prophecy

Taillte Baruch had endured a life cloaked in unending darkness and paralyzing fear, incarcerated within the confines of her wretched basement lair for untold years. In her subterranean sanctum, the air hung heavy with an ever-present dampness, an insidious coldness, and an unyielding shroud of obscurity. She seldom dared to step beyond her self-inflicted prison, haunted relentlessly by nightmarish visions of demonic entities. But on this fateful day, a profound transformation surged within her, igniting a steely resolve to confront the terrors that had forever lurked in the shadows.

As she summoned her newfound strength, Taillte, with a tremor in her voice, addressed the spectral inhabitants of her gloomy abode—none of whom had drawn breath in a long while. These ethereal remnants of her past and harbingers of her future were her sole companions in this self-imposed exile. Her voice quivered as she conveyed her dire mission to them. The moment had arrived; it was time to emerge.

The city outside teemed with life, a whirlwind of people engaged in their mundane routines, blissfully ignorant of the ominous harbinger that Taillte was frantically trying to impart. She approached anyone who would lend an ear, her voice quaking with desperation.

"The beasts draw near!" she implored, eyes wide with terror. "The time quickly approaches!"

Her words, however, fell upon deaf ears. Most dismissed her as a madwoman, their hurried steps carrying them away from her as if she were a specter herself. A handful paused, their expressions a curious blend of pity and irritation, but none took her gravely.

Taillte's frustration welled up as she reached the city gates. She had given her all to warn the denizens, yet it seemed her valiant efforts were futile. Gazing beyond the gates, she discerned the encroaching malevolence she had foreseen, creeping ever closer, time slipping through her trembling fingers.

Defeat and isolation weighed heavily on her heart, but she could not yield now. After years of seclusion and the relentless horrors that had tormented her, her resolve renewed. She decided to seek out kindred spirits who might comprehend her visions and the impending peril. She vowed not to rest until she found someone who would listen, someone who could assist in preparing for the impending darkness.

Taillte's eyes locked onto a solitary traveler approaching the city gates, a deep sense of foreboding welling up within her as if the very darkness she had dreaded were made manifest in this lone figure. She rushed to the gates, frantically beseeching the guards and any who would lend an ear.

"So it is, so it must be!" she cried out, her voice trembling with urgency, tears streaking down her pallid cheeks. She pleaded with them to understand that admitting this traveler would unleash calamity upon the city. But her words remained unheeded, skepticism etched upon the guards' faces.

Unperturbed by Taillte's warnings, the oblivious traveler drew ever closer to the city's heart. Panic surged through her veins as she watched him advance. Time was an inexorable adversary, and if she couldn't convince someone to heed her, disaster would soon befall them all.

As her desperate pleas fell on deaf ears and as she was physically restrained, despair clung to her like a shroud. The traveler continued his relentless march, the city blissfully ignorant of the impending doom she had prophesied. She fought against her restraints, but her efforts proved futile. The gates stood open, and the traveler entered, unchallenged.

With a heart heavy as a stone and a sinking sensation of dread that seemed to plunge into an abyss, Taillte realized that her warnings had fallen on deaf ears. Suspended above the city, she watched helplessly from her vantage point. The grim truth struck her like a lightning bolt—the monstrous horrors she had foreseen had already descended upon them.

Overhead, sinister clouds gathered ominously, casting the city below into a bone-chilling silence. Streets that once bustled with life now lay barren and eerie. Taillte's dire visions had materialized into a grim reality, an inescapable nightmare. The conclusion she had long feared had arrived, and the city would soon confront the horrors she had glimpsed in the darkest recesses of her tortured psyche.

THIRD WEDDING OF VALWYCK

I. CELEBRATORY JOUST

All Haensemen that can take up a lance are invited to test their mettle on the tiltyard, just outside the city walls. He who remains in his saddle come the end of the joust shall walk away with a purse of one-hundred mina, and the admiration of his peers. Horses shall be provided, as will a lance, for the less-fortunate among us.

II. THE BARD AND BOTTLE

Once the joust has concluded, the Ayrikiv shall move their celebrations to the Bard and Bottle tavern, where drink shall be provided by the House of Baruch. The Lord Marshal is known to partake in games of chance, and encourages attendees to come prepared with full pockets.

The Heir to House Amador has found a strong passion in martial combat, having recently ventured to fight Mori and the like and even having saved her uncle Radmir! As a result, It is Nataliya’s choice to host a duelling tournament within the Duchy of Valwyck, for anyone who considers themselves a decent swordsman. A noble prize of 250 mina will be awarded to the victor. 

THE GEMS OF AMADOR

The dove of the family has particularly expressed her appreciation for collecting and searching for gems within the realm of Almaris. It has been decided that a prize will be offered to those able to find the rarest and most beautiful flowers around Lallybroch. Whilst any flower will result in a prize, the rarest of such will be rewarded with fine gems from the House of Amador.

WORDS OF WISDOM

Alongside the twins' chosen events, it is tradition that the Head of the Household provides a speech, sharing their words of wisdom to the younger generation. Such will take place at the end of both girl’s activities, as friends and family gather at Macrath Manor to enjoy refreshments and celebrations!

Under the rule of House Baruch, the County of Ayr hosted a loyal and storied levy by the name of the Order of the Unbowed which lasted throughout its initial period as a vassal and brief independence. It would later be reformed after the Greyspine rebellion to its current iteration, the Greyguard, but became defunct for nearly a century as the House attained ducal status. The reforms later introduced by King Josef I allowed Haeseni peers to hire and retain personal guards for their own protection, and so the guard of House Baruch was reformed with greater structure. Where the old Order had drawn from the peasant levies of the Baruch demesne for its manpower, the Greyguard of today hosts skilled warriors primarily of Ayrikiv stock.

HISTORY

FOUNDING OF THE GREYGUARD

The Order of the Unbowed, predecessor to the Greyguard, was founded during the reign of Otto Marius Baruch, Count of Ayr in 1611 at the start of the Greyspine Rebellion. Count Otto marched the Unbowed down from their mountain keep, Jorenstadt, to reclaim their seat of Saint’s Rest from the imposter Kovachev who had sworn fealty to the Kingdom of Courland. The levy fought well, however they failed to fully reclaim the land. This led Count Otto to order the retreat back to his keep, knowing that he would need as many men as possible to join with his Ruthern allies to eventually launch an attack on the Courlandic invaders. Count Otto eventually led his host to join the Rutherns, where they routed the Courlandic forces during the second battle of the Rothswood to restore the Kingdom of Haense. 

Ser Aldrik founded the modern Greyguard in Atlas after the construction of his keep, Greyguard Hold. Aldrik and the Greyguard soldiers had multiple small disputes with the monarchy over the legality of having a levy, despite Aldrik reassuring that they would only be used in favour of the King. However, Otto II insisted the Greyguard be reduced to only a few bodyguards instead of an active levy. These bodyguards participated in multiple wars, protecting their Count from Renatian and Nordling alike. 

During the reign of Marius Karl Baruch, Count of Ayr, the Greyguard served as it had in his father’s reign. When Greyguard Hold was infiltrated and taken by Arberrang, Count Marius called his levymen and marched upon his old home to reclaim his family’s seat. Count Marius and his men were victorious, and the Greyguard once again were able to defend the lands of the Baruch family and assist in the protection of northern Haense. Count Marius led the Greyguard in the crossing to Arcas, before his abdication in favour of his grandson, Jan Eirik Baruch. 

Jan Eirik Baruch, Count of Ayr, saw through the Royal Levy Ban of 1709 and integrated the Greyguard into the Royal Army in return for the position of Commandant. He served in this position, with the Greyguard under his control, until his expulsion from the Kingdom for conspiring against the King and other allies. The Greyguard then returned home to Ayr, not wanting to serve anyone but a member of House Baruch, swearing now to Sigmar Joren Baruch, Count of Ayr. 

The Greyguard then saw a period of inactivity spanning nearly the entirety of the next century. It was only in the year 1833 that the great-grandson of Sigmar, Duke Ruslan I of Valwyck, reinstated the order upon the declaration of war on the elves of Haelun'or. They currently serve as a small, well-trained guardforce, tasked solely with the defence of the Ducal family.

TRIALS

ORDEALS OF THE BEAR

To be able to take on the oath and fully claim the merits of the Greyguard, one must submit to a series of tasks to demonstrate the fitness of one’s strength and will. These tasks, the Ordeals of the Bear, are enshrined as the benchmark by which all those who enter the Greyguard solidifying their commitment and service for the safety of Valwyck and their faithfulness to the House of Baruch. One must live by and for the land, depending upon its bounties and giving back to its beauty through service, sacrifice, and loyalty.

The Ordeals of the Bear reflect the traditional values of all Ayrikiv. Defined by their persistence, will, and straightforwardness, the trials one takes emphasise the practicality of duty, being harmonious with the elements, and forging kinship. They also assess one’s capacity to be resourceful and to value one’s duty in the face of adversity. These values are modelled off of the centuries old virtues that the heads of Baruch have fulfilled as stalwart defenders of Haeseni traditions and their obligations to protect Northern values.

The structure of the Ordeal requires that all prospects of the Greyguard fulfill a number of requisite tasks that are typically incumbent upon them as they fulfil their duties. They orient one to live a life of pragmatism, utility, and cultivate determination as individuals and as collectives. One must first venture to the coast and to construct a suitable boat that can adequately traverse across the waters surrounding the land. This trial underscores the ability for each recruit to develop their relationship to the waters that sustain the life and commerce of the Ayrikiv. Prospects of the Greyguard must learn to fish and sustain themselves from the bounties of the catch that have sustained the ancestors for generations, to live from their toils and to embrace the lifeworlds of the open waters.

The Ordeals of the Bear are administered by a senior member of the Greyguard, whose experience and mentorship shall be vital to the successful completion of the tasks. Upon satisfying these ordeals, a recruit is submitted for review to determine quality of mind and purity of heart before taking the final oaths.

OATHING

OATH OF THE GREYGUARD

Upon being assessed satisfactorily fulfilling the Ordeals of the Bear, recruits are called forth to affirm their intentions to be sworn in before their liege lord and to the Ayrikiv people. The formula for the full initiation must be recited in the presence of the lawful peer of Valwyck or their designated proxy as witness:

“By the will of the Ayrikiv, I swear humbly to serve my brethren.

I commit myself to my kin, to honour the land and to steward its beauty.

Through virtue, I gain discipline to serve.

Through humility, I gain clarity to pledge myself to the cause.

Through persistence, we might accomplish all that is set for us.

With courage, I shall defend the Ayrikiv. 

For Valwyck, I raise arms.

To do battle and to promote peace, my life is dedicated to the true path.

For the waters have cleansed me, the bounties of the seas sustain me.

I am named a protector of Valwyck and cooperate to her welfare.

If I end here, may my life return to its peaceful sways.

In this, I commit myself in perpetuity.”

TENETS OF THE GREYGUARD

I. By the Ayrikiv people, my oath is unbroken. Hold fast your values and safeguard your culture in service of the coasts and the land by which your body depends.

II. By the Ayrikiv people, resilience through hardship shall temper your resolve and bring forth triumphant grace.

III. By the Ayrikiv people, independence guides your spirit. Hard work and diligence shall usher in true prosperity.

IV. By the Ayrikiv people, honour your kin and do good works by them. Their memory and their name shall live on through you.

V. By the Ayrikiv people, you shall shepherd the abundance of the land, steward the bounties of the seas, and protect the beauty of God’s natural world. It shall endure as an inheritance for generations.

The Houses of Baruch, Colborn, Amador and Gant extend an invitation to all the subjects of His Majesty, noble and common alike, to attend a day of celebration on the shores of their shared lake. Food and drink shall be plentiful, and much of the former shall be pulled from the clear waters of Loch Voron itself. The docks of Lallybroch shall be open for use, with boats available to all and an assortment of other activities in which guests may partake.

I. FISHING ON LOCH VORON

Guests are invited to take to the waters of the great lake in rowboats of fine Ayrikiv make. Those who wish, however, may decorate vessels of their own provided by the House of Baruch. Once they have left the shore, all are encouraged to compete in an angling tournament, competing to catch the most fish in the span of ten Saint’s Minutes. He who returns to Lallybroch with his bucket most full shall receive a prize of one-hundred minae. It is our intent that this event serves as an opportunity to enjoy the natural splendor of the lake, among friends, in a true Ayrikiv fashion.

II. MARKET AT LALLYBROCH

A small market shall be erected at the tourney grounds beyond Lichestadt, offering handmade crafts and trinkets made by skilled Voronian artisans. Guests may expect to find traditional Ayrikiv goods, such as flutes, bagpipes and tartan sashes, as well as those from the other cultures settled on the shores of the lake. Among these are the Scyflings of House Colborn, and the noble House of Amador, each of which shall man a stall in the aforementioned market. 

I. THE FOOL OF AYR

As is tradition, started by the most noble Ser Viktor ‘the Beast’ of House Baruch, a colorful fool shall be on hand to joyous merriment throughout the day. His playful antics and witty jokes are guaranteed to rouse boisterous laughter, while his range of skills and trickery shall surely astonish and amaze. One must be sure to keep an eye out for him as he roams about the grounds, for fun shall surely follow in his wake.

While most Haeseni are accustomed to Waldenian and Naumariav, the dialect of the Ayrikiv people, or Ayrikiv in the Naumariav tongue, that hails from the lands of House Baruch is strange to most, and incomprehensible to the rest. It is unique among the cultural tongues of the Dual-Kingdom, which traces itself back to the largely indecipherable ancient Ayrikiv language. This collection of common Ayrikiv words and manners of speaking has been penned with the intent of allowing easy translations, as well as providing a further semblance of uniformity for the tongue itself.

THE AYRIKIV ACCENT

INFORMATION

For much of the history of the Ayrikiv peoples they shared in the common tongue of Hanseti-Ruska, Naumariav. The ancestors of most present-day Ayrikiv would have spoken in a manner indistinguishable from their Haeseni counterparts. Under the influence of Duke Matyas “the Scyfling” Baruch of Valwyck, the distinct dialect and culture was heavily promoted among the peoples of Ayr, integrating much of the language and mannerisms of the namesake of Matyas. 

The tongue of the Ayrikiv has only reached its maturity in the most recent generations. While not entirely unified, many Ayrikiv share words and patterns of speech unique to their culture. Despite minor differences from man to man, all generally share the same thick, rhotic accent.

Many Ayrikiv tend to drop T’s and H’s in words as they speak, an extreme case of this can be seen in the following example; 

Wha’ a fine coa’ o’ mail ye ‘ave there. → (What a fine coat of mail you have there.)

Similar to many other dialects, Ayrikiv often do not pronounce the ‘g’ in words which end in ‘ing’, for example; 

Th’ whales won’ be catchin’ ‘emselves. → (The whales will not be catching themselves.)

Note; This is not always the case, however, and would only be so in the instance of particularly thick accents. Annunciation is held in high regards to phrases when in situations of importance, such as when one is the host to a feast, or speaking to higher nobility.

In the days of yore, when King Petyr I bestowed upon Eirik ‘The Whaler’ the first baronial title to the House of Baruch, a ritual upon the ascension of each titleholder began to take its form. This custom would continue to evolve and develop throughout the centuries as Baruch went from Baronial and Comital house to Ducal status. The whalebone coronet of Eirik I, being a symbol of the houses seafaring ways, was traded for a recovered ancestral circlet of Saint Otto of Vanderfell, the founding father of the family. The standard Waldenian lute and bard was exchanged for the Ayrikiv bagpipes and fiddle, and similarly so did were the vibrant Waldenian gowns exchanged for tartans, fur, and wool clothing. And as the culture of the people of Ayr has developed, so too has the process of ascension. 

This procession shall be meticulously recorded and chronicled so that the traditions of the Ayrikiv people and the House of Baruch may be preserved in the annals of history, for the future use by the descendants of Valwyck and its subjects.

WHALEBONE CORONET OF EIRIK I

Patriarchs adorned by this regalia: Eirik I, Otto I, Aldrik I, Jan I, Sigmar I

A circlet of interlocking whale bones, adorned with various crystals and gems representing the colours of House Baruch. Crafted by skillful smiths during the reign of Count Eirik I, the coronet serves as a symbol of Baruch prowess and prestige.

SAINT OTTO’S CORONET

Patriarchs adorned by this regalia: Petyr II, Matyas I, Ruslan I, Eirik III, Isabel I

Legend has it that this old, silver coronet was once worn by Saint Otto of Haense as Grand Duke of Vanderfell. It is heavily engraved, and the words Gottmituns' is engraved across its front, bordered by a set of flawless gemstones.

WHALEBONE SCEPTER OF EIRIK I

An ivory sceptre made of whalebone, crafted for Eirik I. The polished ivory rod was gilded at the bottom with a gold trimmed hilt. The sceptre was topped with a bear head carved out of whalebone. The sceptre was meticulously marked with patterns symbolising the waves of the sea, and mountains of Greyspine.

LIVERY CHAIN OF SIGMAR I

A chain-linked necklace made of gold that sits on the shoulders, worn by Sigmar I. The necklace features a bold centrepiece; a large, red ruby situated at the centre of the necklace. It also features meticulously designed medallions situated in intervals on the necklace, each medallion is engraved with the seal of House Baruch or of House Barbanov.

TARTAN SASH OF VENERABLE EIRIK III

A red tartan sash worn by the Venerable Eirik III. The red tartan consists of intersecting stripes with different shades of red. The tartan sash is held by a silver circular brooch with a bear standing in the middle.

PROCESSION

BAPTISM OF THE DUKE/DUCHESS

The Baptism of the Duke or Duchess is performed in a private ceremony before the public ascension, surrounded only by their family and their Liege-Lord the Crown of Haense, if present.

At the beginning of the Baptism of the Duke/Duchess, this prayer is spoken by the Priest:

 “Almighty God, in whose name we consecrate these sacred rites, grant that divine favour enshrines your servant into their noble station, the Duke/Duchess of Valwyck. By Saint Otto’s intercession, we call forth the holy decrees of faith to strengthen and sanctify, making pure the soul of the Duke/Duchess of Valwyck. May these waters cleanse the body and purify the heart, making him/her worthy of this temporal patrimony.”

REGALIA OF THE DUKE/DUCHESS

The Regalia is placed on the Duke/Duchess by the former Regent/ patriarch;

First the sash of Venerable Eirik III is placed on the left shoulder of the Duke/Duchess, then fastened to their robe with the silver bear brooch over their heart. The following is then spoken by the former patriarch:

“Don the sash of the Venerable Eirik III, that you may inherit the wisdom of your forebears.”

Next, the livery chain of Sigmar I is placed on the Duke/Duchess’ neck, with the former patriarch saying:

“Don the livery chain of Sigmar I, that you may inherit the conviction of your forefathers.” 

Next is the whalebone sceptre of Eirik I, held by the new Duke/Duchess in their right hand. The former patriarch then says the following:

“Don the whalebone sceptre of Eirik I, that you may nourish the bounties of the Ayrikiv.”

Finally, Saint Otto’s coronet is placed atop the Duke/Duchess’ head, with the former patriarch speaking the following:

“Don the Coronet of Vanderfell, that you may never forget the traditions of your people.”

“Ordained with these relics, we call forth the great heritage inaugurated and sustained by the faithful lineage of the House of Baruch. With the wisdom and devotion impressed unto us through the name of Saint Otto of Vanderfell, great patron of the most worthy and chosen Haeseni people, we invoke the pronouncement of these ceremonial rites. May these relics and the intentions that bear their significance rightfully install the head of this peerage.”

ANOINTING OF THE DUKE/DUCHESS

The anointing of the Duke/Duchess is performed by the priest with the preserved oil of the last whale slain by Aldrik I:

The palms of the Duke/Duchess are traced in the Lorraine cross with the oil:

“Bless these hands, that the toils of the Duke/Duchess of Valwyck be a service worthy and holy.”

The forehead of the Duke/Duchess is traced in the Lorraine cross with the oil:

“Bless the mind, that the insight of the saints and venerated draw near as the Duke/Duchess carries out his/her duty with earnestness and prudence. May the wisdom of the forebears throughout the centuries guide the Duke/Duchess in his/her station as head of the family.”

FINAL PRAYER

This prayer is said by the Duke/Duchess at the end of the ceremony at the feet of Saint Otto of Vanderfell’s tomb:

“May the blessings of Almighty God, through the intercession of Saint Otto, pour forth. Grant that I may be worthy to receive this sanctification with a purity of mind, body, and spirit. Consecrate my will, so that my deeds and words be in the service of the Holy Will and in the grand heritage by which my life is now dedicated. I call forth the names of those before me and advance the peace and grace that is befitting to the station of the Duke/Duchess of Valwyck. May God ever sustain me. Amen.”

RECESSIONAL

As the Duke/Duchess exits the cathedral, a symphony of bagpipes and fiddles are played; the guests follow the Duke/Duchess out followed by the band members. This signals the end of the procession.

Let it be known throughout the Kingdom of Haense that the Duchess of Valwyck, Roslin of House Baruch, has reached the age of majority and shall claim her birthright as such. This shall mark the 9th Ducal Ascension of House Baruch, and with the trust and faith of her subjects, it is our hope that it shall not be the last as she guides the Duchy of Valwyck and the people of Ayr to newfound heights of prosperity and excellence. 

I. CEREMONY OF ASCENSION

The public ascension of Roslin shall be hosted within Saint Otto’s Cathedral in the Duchy of Valwyck. Relatives of the Duchess will be invited to attend a private baptism at the docks of Loch Voron beforehand.

II. DUCAL JOUST

To commemorate this joyous occasion, a grand joust shall take place, where the most resolute and gifted Haeseni may test their mettle and compete for a reward of four-hundred minae in the name of the new Duchess and the Crown of Haense. Horses shall be provided, as will a lance, and those wishing to partake are encouraged to present themselves in the Valwyck tourney grounds. 

God keep Duchess Roslin I of House Baruch, may her reign be long and prosperous.

The customs of the people of Ayr have been notably undocumented until recent years, taught only through tongue for numerous generations. It is of great interest to the House of Baruch that the Ayrikiv culture is preserved and chronicled, and such an endeavour first began under the reign of Venerable Eirik. Despite this, it was Valdemar Baruch, the Duke-Abdicant of Valwyck, who first transcribed two folk songs in their entirety, though he was unable to finish the task he had begun. In his stead, the Archivist and Duchess Roslin I has seen that the document is completed and published, providing an invaluable glimpse into the music and stories of Ayr as follows;

BANNER OF THE BEAR

INFORMATION

In the time of the War of the Silver Isles, the men of the Greyguard sought to inspire the Ayrikiv and their allies with song as they marched into battle. It is said that the Banner of the Bear was composed as soldiers huddled around a campfire in the first nightfall of a raid, where a grizzled veteran began to sing the beginning of a tune that he had learned in his youth. Others began to add to the song, and it soon became a reminder of the courage of those who fight for their nation and loved ones. The chant is now taught to new recruits of the Greyguard and is repeated in the marches before battle.

INFORMATION

Throughout the days that Duke Valdemar spent within the bustling docks of Lallybroch, he stumbled upon some of the local sailors who were drunk in the tavern. All present had been singing loudly, and dancing upon the tables. This interaction served as an inspiration to the Duke, prompting him to transcribe the song in its entirety. He noted that their attitudes were unfiltered and contained great passion.

CALL OF THE SEA

INFORMATION

Told often in old Ayrikiv folk-lore, Garen of Toft, reputed to have been transformed into the first whale, is well-loved and well-known amongst the Ayrikiv peoples. Such tales were the inspiration that led a poet of Lallybroch to compose the tale in the form of song. Many sailors and mothers of Ayr adopted this retelling of events as opposed to the lengthy story, which now serves as a remembrance to the Sealord.

HISTORY

The house of Baruch fell under scrutiny following the betrayal of turncoat Ser Jan Baruch during the War of Two Emperors. Upon the ascension of Sigmar Baruch as Count of Ayr in 1715, people continued to doubt Baruch’s loyalty. Luckily though, under the new Count’s directive, the Baruch household would slowly re-establish itself as a prominent member of the Haeseni peerage, as members entered into various offices of the Haeseni government.

Following the house’s vast contributions and restored reputation, Sigmar Baruch assembled a coalition of Haeseni lords to petition King Andrik IV for a titular elevation. In 1745, House Baruch was enfeoffed the Duchy of Relavia. A few days later, the ducal title was renamed to the Duchy of Valwyck.

The bloodied black eagle represents the armorial of the Kingdom of Aesterwald (used during the Schism Wars). The black bear represents the House of Baruch, as descendants of Saint Otto. HISTORY

Otto Arius Heinzreich was a Waldo-Haeseni nobleman and politician who served as the Grand Duke of Vanderfell from 1491 till his death in 1504. Otto was canonised by the Church of the Canon as one of the three Defenders of the Canon for his actions in the Schism War; the two others being Saint Daniel of Cyriaum and Saint Emma of Woldzmir.

Since 1504, the title remained in abeyance till it was wrongfully claimed by House Barclay during the Waldenic Diet.

HISTORY

Following the foundation of the Kingdom of Hanseti-Ruska, the then-baronial House of Baruch began to solidify itself as a prominent, contributive and steadfast vassal. Upon the succession of King Andrik II, the then-Baron Eirik Baruch was awarded the County of Ayr (shares name with Imperial title of Ayr) for his House’s loyal service and vast contribution to the Kingdom’s economy. The County of Ayr is recognized as Baruch’s first Haeseni title, with the Barony of Voron being an Imperial title initially.

HISTORY

In 1573, Emperor John III of the Holy Orenian Empire enfeoffed Eirik [I] Baruch the Barony of Voron, elevating the Baruch household to the Imperial peerage for the first time since their dawning. Following the unification of the crowns of Hanseti and Ruska in the summer of 1578, the Imperial title of Voron transitioned to become a Haeseni title by King Petyr I. As a result, the House of Baruch was elevated as one of the first houses in the Kingdom of Haense’s nascence.

In 1799, King Josef I upgraded the Barony title of Voron to a Viscounty. Since then, the Baruch household continues to hold the title in perpetuity.

HISTORY

In 1680, the heir of House Baruch, Sigmar Baruch married the Baroness of Gant, Klara Ashford de Arryn. Nine years later in 1689, Klara Ashford died due to contracting tuberculosis. Due to the marriage being matrilineal, the barony title of Gant was granted to Sigmar Baruch. For a year, a series of legal disputes were challenged between the two houses to contest the title’s inheritance. In 1690, King Robert I, settled the dispute by affirming Baruch’s claim as legitimate through a royal decree.

It is with regret that we inform you of a premonition that has come to our Lady, Duchess Roslin Annastas Baruch, within this last Saint’s Night. In her dream she was visited by her deceased great grandfather, Eirik Baruch. He warned that the shifting of the very earth shall cause the rubble of Crestwatch to tumble down the hills, resulting in the destruction of our beloved Lallybroch. The late Lord did note that the Ducal seat of Lichestadt would remain unscathed. Her Grace thus decrees that all villagers and serfs be evacuated immediately, and take refuge in the tents beyond the castle walls.

The Council understands that this may cause much stress and inconvenience, but do implore the good people of Valwyck to trust in their Duchess’s vision. It would seem to hold weight, and Her Grace believes the earthquake felt during the coronation of the King to be confirmation from God that her dreams are to come true. The Council shall do all possible to ensure the safety and well-being of their subjects, and implore that all remain patient and cooperative in this difficult time.

After the passing of Kaustantin Baruch, we hoped he would be the last of the living legends of Valwyck to pass during our Regency. Unfortunately, this will not be the case, as I must report the untimely death of the Former Duke of Valwyck and Lord Palatine, Eirik ‘Lacksons’ Baruch. This is a devastating loss for House Baruch, and as someone who had personally received counsel and wisdom from him, a greater loss for all of Hanseti-Ruska. It was our hope that ‘Lacksons’ would live long enough to counsel the young Duchess, Roslin, and his great grandchildren for years to come, alas that was not Godan’s plan for us.

To remind those who lived during his reign, and to inform those who are too young to remember his years of service, we would be remiss if we did not stop and acknowledge his achievements and reflect on them after his passing. Eirik’s service as Duke of Valwyck saw the expansion of Lallybroch and the Ducal Castle of Lichestadt, the formation and success of the Valwyck Bears Bucketball team in the ABA, the reformation of the Greyguard retinue during the Sinner’s War, and the translation of the Chronicles of the Ayrikiv (or the Deeds of the Aijer People), an ancient history of the people of Ayr. During his tenure as Lord Palatine Eirik oversaw one of the most tumultuous times in recent Haeseni History. He personally aided in evacuating Pontiff Everard VI and stopping the horrific Orenian attempt at an assassination and schism of the Holy Mother Church, He advocated and pushed for the Karenina Accord which allowed women to inherit just as men within Haense, He revived the Chancellor’s Report in order to properly inform the Haeseni public, and served as the head of the Aulic Government during the Sinner’s War in which we saw ourselves leave victorious. 

His passing symbolises a greater loss for Haense, the death of the Old Guard. Those courageous and resilient few that saw Haense through its times of great strife and obstacles and led us to an age of progress and reform with their heads held high, steadfast in their principles and beliefs. Without them, the downfall of Orenian Tyranny would not have been possible. Without them Hansetti-Ruska may never have come to the realization of its potential and pushed itself to the forefront of Humanity through hard work, determination, and resiliency; the characteristics of all Highlanders. The Impact of Eirik and the Old Guard can not be overstated, we can only hope to live up to their standards and faith in the Haeseni people.

The Ducal Council of Valwyck deems it fit that there are certain roles to be filled by those who fit the particular expertise or description. If any of the below are of interest to you, send a letter and/or application to Franziska Baruch or Otto Gant. 

A list of available positions are provided below;

THE GREYGUARD

The Greyguard have served as the primary levy of the House of Baruch for generations. The position has previously been taken by men and women of the north, sworn to protect the family. They will be permitted a room and board free of cost within the village of Lallybroch, located beyond the walls of Lichestadt in exchange for their service and loyalty. Four greyguard are required.

THE MASTER-AT-ARMS

Tasked with training the children of the Duke and Duchess in combat is the Master-at-Arms. It is expected of the Master-at-Arms to be skilled in a variety of weaponry, from the blade to the bow. Patience is another requirement for any who wishes to take on the position as the children learn combat, and a short-temper would be ill-fitted for such. One master-at-arms is required.

THE TUTOR

The resident tutor of Valwyck is expected to be well-versed in any number of artistic and literary fields, though competence in the histories and Haeseni culture are imperative. Equally so, they must be capable of controlling the growing brood of the Ayrian nobility, who are renowned for their rowdy nature. Those of both common and gentle birth may apply, and shall be provided with lodgings in Lichestadt for the duration of their tenure. One tutor is required.

THE HANDMAIDENS

A handmaiden is expected to tend to their lady with an attentive and kind disposition, heeding their calls with a willingness to aid their counterpart. Not only must she be willing to lend a helping hand to her lady, but she must also be willing to lend her ear in the most trying of times. Simply put, a handmaiden must emanate loyalty in everything she does. After all, it is a position that, once obtained, is held for life lest the handmaiden obtains a higher station than that of the lady they are serving. 

Alongside the emotional support that handmaidens are expected to lend their ladies, ladies-in-waiting are expected to help their patrons dress for courtly events, apply their makeup, put their jewellery on, and so on and so forth. They might also deliver messages and pick out their wardrobe. Anything the patron requests of her benefactor, the handmaiden must oblige. In addition, these ladies can expect housing within Lichestadt for their service. Two handmaidens are required.

THE COURIER

While Lichestadt is equipped with an aviary, birds have proven to be rather easily intercepted by brigands and other ne’er-do-wells. This courier shall be expected to carry and deliver missives and letters from members of the Ducal family in a swift manner. It goes without saying that one must be comfortable in the saddle, and not averse to the use of violence to ensure none but the intended eyes look upon their contents. A horse will be supplied, as will lodgings in Lichestadt. One courier is required.

THE FISHERMEN

There has, recently, been a diminishment of fisherman manning Lake Voron. Evidently, the biodiversity of Lake Voron is vast and ever-expanding. Indeed, it is even theorised that there are hundreds of undiscovered species lingering in Voron’s depths. Nonetheless, the fauna recorded presently are confirmed to be unique to Voron’s environment alone, recorded solely by Duchess Isabel I over the span of her lifetime. The amount of fishermen required is not stated: any amount will be sufficient.

THE DEATH OF A STATESMAN

It is never painless to accept the death of kin, nor is it easy to announce the passing of a loved one in such a public forum; but as Lord Regent of Valwyck I am charged with the management of the family estate and tasked with wearisome duty of settling the affairs of the deceased.

It is because of this station that I must be the one to report the death of the former Lord Palatine, Kaustantin Baruch. He was found unconscious in his bed and pronounced dead of apoplexy, a hemorrhage of the brain, by Ayrikiv physicians. He appeared to have passed suddenly in his sleep.

I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge the many accolades of his tenure. Kaustantin served as Lord Palatine for almost a decade to King Sigismund III, he was a dutiful servant to his station and a respected statesman by his peers. He legislated reforms through the Royal Duma, something most Palatines do solely by decree, proving himself to be a skillful negotiator and an advocate for noble and democratic expression. His talent and character could be seen through many of his other achievements as well; when he eased tensions between families on the verge of blood feuds and when he negotiated an end to the Silver War with Haelun’or. Furthermore, he stood fast alongside King Sigismund against Orenian aggression and continued the no-nonsense policies that allowed the Kingdom of Haense to flourish on the global stage.

His death is undoubtedly a great loss for our family, but also for Haense overall. His character and ideals helped shape Haeseni governance for years to come, and places him in the same upper echelon of great deceased Ayrikiv statesmen with the likes of Sigmar, Petyr, Matyas, and Terrence May. It is Because of his impact that I shall declare a State of Mourning within the Duchy of Valwyck. The families of Baruch and Gant shall adorn themselves in black alongside the people of Valwyck for the remainder of the year.

A brief ceremony will be held in honour of Kaustantin. I invite any who considered themselves a companion or kin to pay their respects as he is laid to rest within the crypts. It is to be followed by a feast within Lichestadt as he would not ask us to mourn, but celebrate his life.

It has been almost a year since Duke Valdemar left Valwyck in our care. During these months, we have served faithfully and tirelessly to administer and dutifully steward Valwyck, Lallybroch, and the encompassing lands that House Baruch has been granted to govern. During this time, we have begun preparations for the reconstruction and renovation of the Burgh of Lallybroch, we have further restructured and expanded in detail upon the Ducal council of Valwyck, and we have patiently awaited the birth of the Duke and Duchess’ firstborn child and heir.

It is with immense joy and great pride that we may announce the successful labor and birth of the firstborn child of Duke Valdemar and Franziska Baruch within the Castle of Lichestadt. Last night, under the shining stars that chart the course of Valdemar’s expedition, a healthy and lively daughter was born to the couple. 

The Regency Council was in agreement on the name of the child; to honor a former Duchess that co-ruled in her own right. The Child shall be named after the wife of Former Duke Eirik Baruch, who was appointed Co-ruler by her husband for the last few years of their reign; she served Valwyck and the Haeseni courts honorably for many years. the name and title of the child shall be the following

While this does mark a milestone in the Regency, our service is not over. The Chancellor serves as the leading member of the ducal council, overseeing and administrating the daily workings and council resolutions at the behest of the Duke of Valwyck. The Chancellor is appointed and charged with fulfilling the pertinent wishes of the Duke of Valwyck. Lord Regent Otto Gant serves currently as the Chancellor of Valwyck, being appointed as such before the Duke left for his Expedition.

The Lady of Valwyck, traditionally the wife of the Duke, serves as another member of the ducal council. They are charged with the planning, arranging, and organizing of ducal festivals and events within the demesne of the duchy. It is their duty to aid in the prosperity and planning of the affairs of Valwyck. In addition, they may also play a vital role in politics, this is at the discretion of the Duke. Duchess Franziska Baruch currently serves as the Lady of Valwyck after marrying Duke Valdemar and being considered one of his closest confidants.

The Commander of the Greyguard is appointed to maintain and train members of the retinue. They are charged with the protection and agency of security within the Duchy of Valwyck. It is their duty to protect the Burgh of Lallybroch and members of the Ducal family of Baruch. Lord Krisdean Gant serves currently as Commander of the Greyguard Retinue, appointed as such by Lord Regent Otto Gant after seeing the necessity to restore the retinue to its former state after years of inefficiency.

It is with a heavy heart that I inform the people of Valwyck and the Kingdom at large that I, Duke Valdemar of Valwyck, intend to depart on an expedition of indeterminate length. For the good of the realms that are my birthright, I leave the Duchy of Valwyck in a state of Regency. 

Those dear to me know I have my whole life felt a calling toward the seas - my shelves lined with the ocean's tales and my dreams touched by her song. Dutifully though I have whiled away my childhood in the halls of Lichtestadt and libraries of the capital, I confess I cannot ignore this yearning in perpetuity. The station to which I was born cannot repress so earnest a calling. To explore the known and unknown world. To meet and understand peoples beyond our imagination who speak in foreign tongues. To one day, God willing, furnish this castle with the treasures I find in the hope it shall redeem to those who rest below it the responsibility I could not bear for them. Though I may appear on occasion for repair and resupply, I cannot say when I might return in earnest. Acknowledging this I leave the Duchy in trustworthy hands.

Until my announced return or the coming of age of my firstborn, borne now by the Duchess, I leave the regency of the Duchy of Valwyck in the capable hands of his Lordship Otto Gant, Baron of Gant. He shall be aided in this capacity by a council consisting of the Duchess Franziska Baruch and my grandsire Lord Eirik Baruch. In this council I place my complete trust. It shall govern at its own discretion until the aforementioned conditions of my return or the ascent of my child are met.

It is mine and the Regency Council’s hope that Valwyck shall continue to flourish under their leadership, ushering in an era of prosperity for this great and noble land on Loch Voron.

There was a jovial atmosphere in the village of Lallybroch as a carriage long unseen finally made its return. The fishermen’s wives hard at work scaling the day’s catch called and whistled tunes. Old friends raised glasses through open windows to a darling of the Ayrikiv commonfolk.It was known throughout the village that her father Matyas had set her the task of locating a long lost brother - her uncle Leopold.

 Shortly following her return, letters were delivered to the women of the Morrivi Court bearing a small Baruch seal in red wax.

“To friends auld and new,

The Laidies Niamh Baruch and Lilyana Ludovar shall be hosting a tea party at the Baruch stronghold of Lichtestadt on the occasion of Laidy Niamh’s recent return to the Kingdom of Hanseti-Ruska.

Guests shall be served heather honey tea along with an assortment of local pastries and other treats. All laidies and girls of gentle or noble birth are encouraged to attend, mingle, and share the latest happenings of the season, in the capital and throughout the Kingdom.

The event shall be held on the 5th of Joma ag Umund of the year 447 E.S. upon Lady Niamh Baruch’s return. It is her hope that she is welcomed into Haeseni society once more with open arms.”

When the Haeseni resettled onto Almaris in the year 349 E.S., the Baruchs, under the leadership of Duke Matyas, travelled east of the early settlement that would later become Karosgrad. They sought to find an ocean for their people to settle by, to continue their traditions of whaling and fishing. They arrived upon the shores of Lake Voron, then thought to lead out to the ocean. It was only decades later, around 388 E.S., that the lake had been explored entirely, and that it was revealed that it was, in fact, not part of the ocean, but a large inland body of water. 

Despite there being no clear connection to the ocean, however, Lake Voron shares many characteristics with the sea. For one, it consists of saltwater, not of freshwater. Because of its unique characteristics, there is speculation regarding the possibility of there being an underground and underwater connection between Lake Voron and the Attenlund Sea. Most interesting, perhaps, is the variety of flora and fauna that reside within Lake Voron, for it appears to share an interesting ecosystem comprising both that of an ocean and that of a lake within it.

I. FLORA

PEARLWEED

The Pearlweed flower tends to be found in clusters amidst the lake’s shores, though is mildly uncommon due to Valwyck’s harsh and wintry climate. Evidently, the Pearlweed blossom is only suited for the kinder summer months, though some rare subspecies are capable of surviving the harsh Valwyck winters. 

The blooms are rather sizable too, with stems measuring anywhere from twelve to eighteen inches in length. The flowers themselves are quite wide, with a span of about eight to ten inches in total. In addition, the flower can be seen in hues of white and pink alike, though the white-hued flowers - as per the blossom’s name - are more commonly seen about the shores of Lake Voron.

THE LAKE LILY

The Lake Lily is the most common of the Voronian flora. Similar to the Voronian Pearlweed, the waterlily-like plants are found in large clusters most commonly. Like their water-lily counterparts, however, these flowers exist in aquatic environments only. The icy waters of Lake Voron, surprisingly, are the perfect temperature for these lilies to flourish in.Oddly enough, the Sea Lily seems to thrive in Voron’s salty waters unlike many other plants native to Hanseti-Ruska. 

Notably, these blooms are also the most resilient of the flora Lake Voron encompasses. They usually survive all year long and do not falter in the freezing climate of Valwyck. Moreover, this plant is much smaller than the other shrubs seen about the shores of Lake Voron. The lilypads measure about six to eight inches in diameter and the sea lilies themselves bear a span of four to six inches at most. 

AYRIAN’S GOLD

This flower is the most prized amongst the flora of Lake Voron due to its rare yellow hue. In fact, this bloom is the rarest of all flora that constitutes Voron. Further, its rarity has led many to believe that it is a sign of great fortune and prosperity for those who discover it. However, because of its rarity, not much is known about this blossom spare for its colour and how long it tends to live, hence why it has been dubbed “Ayrian’s Gold.” 

Much like the Lake Lily, this plant takes the shape of a typical waterlily and exists within aquatic environments only. It is slightly smaller than the Lake Lily, however, though its other sizes have yet to be discovered. Uniquely, these plants also tend to have the least resilience, further contributing to their rarity; Ayrian’s Gold will bloom in the spring but most will die by the time autumn arrives, as the temperatures in Valwyck during the autumn months are far too cold for these blooms to withstand. 

II. FAUNA

THE AYRIAN LAKEWHALE

The Ayrian Lakewhale is a creature of great mystique, though it is most certainly real as it has been sighted on multiple occasions. It is no question that the Lakewhale is massive, though varying accounts on its size are what contributes to the mystery surrounding this creature. This, of course, has led to the formulation of tales, stories, legends, and even songs about the famed Lakewhale. 

It is said that these Lakewhales measure up to twenty-five feet in length, though sailors of yore have reported sighting ones with a span of forty feet, further contributing to the legends about the inconspicuous “lake monster” of Voron. 

Usually, the Ayrian Lakewhale bears a bluish or black hue, making it difficult  to spot within Voron’s deep blue waters, though an Ayrian Lakewhale possessing a silvery white hue was spotted on one particular occasion. The whereabouts of this albino whale are unknown, as no Baruch has spotted it since. 

THE VORONIAN TORTOISE

The Voronian Tortoise is the only species of tortoise known to Voron, though its vibrantly golden shell makes it stand out amongst the shades of blue it is so frequently seen amongst. It is averagely sized in comparison to its other aquatic counterparts, spanning about twelve inches in length across its shell. Most frequently, it is spotted loitering upon the shores, sometimes tucked away within tall blades of seagrass.

Astonishingly, gathered evidence suggests that these creatures can withstand the wintry climates all year long, especially peculiar for a reptile suited for warmer temperatures.

Moreover, varying sizes and colours of the Voronian Tortoise have yet to be recorded, though it is quite likely that many subspecies exist within Voron’s evolving ecosystem, perhaps lingering much farther beyond its shores than once anticipated.

THE PETRYSAN COD

This species of fish is the most abundant amongst Voronian sea life, amusingly dubbed the Petrysan cod after Dukes Petyr I and Petyr II of Valwyck. They are fairly large fish, ranging from one to two feet in length, though these sizes can vary. Nonetheless, they are a great source of commerce for the denizens of Lallybroch, seeing as they are so greatly abundant.

The Petrysan Cod bears a yellow-brownish hue, though ones possessing a rather bluish tint have been spotted on a few rare occasions. These are dubbed ‘Lucky Cod’ since they are rather rare, and should one spot this type of cod or even catch it, they might just gain some extra luck.

AYRIAN’S FOE

The Ayrian’s Foe fish is a vibrantly coloured sort of catfish native to Voron, typically blue or red in hue. Though it might seem harmless upon first glance, it bears its name for good reason. Sailors that frequent Voron’s waters note that this fish is particularly aggressive and can sting or even bite with its unusually sharp teeth wideset maw.

In fact, one legend states that an unfortunate Ayrian sailor lost his finger due to an injury obtained from one of these frisky fishes. Thus, it was dubbed “the Ayrian’s foe” from thereon. Despite its aggressive nature, however, the size of this creature is hardly intimidating as it spans seven to eight inches in width on average. 

Evidently, the biodiversity of  Lake Voron is vast and ever-expanding. Indeed, it is even theorised that there are hundreds of undiscovered species lingering in Voron’s depths. Nonetheless, the flora and fauna recorded presently are confirmed to be unique to Voron’s environment alone, recorded solely by Duchess Isabel I over the span of her lifetime. 

Should any curious soul venture out to Voron’s shores and discover any flora or fauna unrecorded here, it is advised that they send the Duchess Isabel a letter informing her of such.
