[1] – Grammar and Coherence
Now, I understand that many of our best roleplayers use English as a second language, or do not have the firmest grasp of it. However, should someone like this apply for said server, they should know of their tendency to say, make grammatical errors, and proofread their application multiple times before submitting it. Not to say I would ever deny an app for the simple reason of a missing punctuation mark, but if it's obvious that someone wrote the application and clearly did not bother looking over it for mistakes, I would most likely think twice. This plays into the second part of this listed point. Inconsistent content means that an applicant did not really think through what they were writing, instead were "winging it". This should be a simple thing to catch and correct, unless someone doesn't double check their application; referring to my first point. Grammar is the most notable thing about an application, and as such it should make a good impression and show evidence of a real attempt. i.e, "i liek roelplaysz" is a no no.
[2] - Effort in Answering Short Answer Questions
Not saying that all one work answers are bad or incorrect, but in the case of the server application format, every answer should be at least one sentence long. It's almost like science class, where they made you not only write the answer to something, but why that is, and what it means. Even the answer to a simple question like, "Can your character wield a sword?" should be carefully thought out and crafted.
Not, "Yes" or "No" but "My character is not skilled in swordsmanship because, (yadda yadda) he prefers (yadda yadda), this means he (yadda yadda)" Not an essay, but something that tells me more about how your character acts.
Because let's be honest, why would that question be on there in the first place? I don't think it was made to see what level of swordsmanship people were, more of, how will someone approach this question?

[3] - Knowledge of Lore
No, not just "Yes I know the four races" ,I mean actual knowledge. To think that people would carefully analyze every post on the forums as to incorporate every bit of lore imaginable, or to memorize the wiki articles is ridiculous, but even a small bit of lore put into an app would change my perspective a bit. Such as the acknowledgement of a recent event, or the use of an existing nation into your bio. In my app, I put into a very small bit about the Oren Guard and Al'Khazar, and I don't think that this is what got me accepted, but I still think it helped. Although by no means the most important aspect of an application, to me it is still something that should be taken more seriously. In fact it would help new players prepare; instead of being completely lost when joining a server, they would know, "Oh, my hometown in Al'Khazar, I should head there and try to be a guard."

[4] - What do you know about Roleplaying? What is it?
I know this is on every single app on the thread, but it is for good reason. Although a short answer question, what someone posts here will make or break there chances in many cases. Posting a generic dictionary definition will not get you in on my books. In most situations, if someone is even on this website, applying, they probably have an idea what roleplaying is. Then again, so does pretty much everybody. Simply put, it should answer the question. Not what other games you have roleplayed in (which is a mistake I made), but what roleplaying (in your mind) entails, and what someone has to do to go about roleplaying properly.

[5] - Character Biography and realism
A lot of what I expect is expressed in the excellent topic, "How to avoid making a Gary/Mary Stu" http://www.lordofthecraft.net/forum/index.php?/topic/27643-how-to-avoid-making-a-mary-suegary-stu/
To be honest there are already enough Master swordsman, magician, viking, lumberjack, actor, healer, glowey eye people in Aegis. They would have to have a pretty amazing application for me to accept them if it's like that. Their character biography should be reasonable and original. I won't go into to much detail about what I mean, but just like in the real world, everyone is different. All the characters should have a different past, personality, motive, because no one is the same. Not asking people to look at every single application before theirs and cross reference for similarities, but it should stand out at least somewhat. Remember, it's real people reading the apps, make it interesting.
