      In other words people might have 'good' motivations of wanting to provide interesting RP for people. But they want to be able to do this without having to ever relinquish their positions of power.

      If a person wanted to create some new and interesting RP by introducing a new leader then why wouldn't they hand over leadership to someone else? While people might kill of their character and replace it with their heir to create some interesting RP. The underlying reason why their even played their own heir in the first place is almost always one of wanting to hold onto power.
