Jem lived in a small town near Sanctuary and was in a street gang. His father was a heavy drinker and was almost never home, when he was he beat Jem savagely. To get away from his abusive father he joined a street gang and normally slept in their hid out. One day after weeks of not returning home he went back to find his mother and sister dead and his father sleeping on the couch holding a beer bottle covered in blood. Jem fled the house traumatized. He later heard that his father had been deployed for the army in 1558 and never heard another word from him. His father was presumed dead. Jem became distant with his friends and soon left the gang due to grief. He joined a group of sailors and worked on board a ship until his eighteenth birthday. One of the missions he was set on the ship was to transport a group of exotic animals across to Al-Wakrah, The animals were being mistreated and being that he had a soft spot for animals he felt bad. One particularly cute tiger cub caught his eye. Jem feed and watered this tiger the whole way to Al-Wakrah and fell in love with the little creature. When they arrived at the port of Al-Wakrah he moved the cage off the ship and let the tiger out. Smuggling the animal through the crowds of people he found a private ship builder and spent his lives savings on a ship to sail to his previous destination, Salvus. He arrived at the port in Salvus and decided to settle down once and for all with his pet tiger who had now grown into a large beast, but very domestic and affectionate...he was ready to look for a partner and have kids and....one small problem...He is gay.
