Thomas Crawley was born in the town of Helena in the empire of Oren. He's had a normal, boring life working with his father as a blacksmith's apprentice, until Helena was besieged and their smithy destroyed. Left broke and without a job, he signed up for the Renatian army where he served for the rest of the war. After he was relieved of duty and paid his wages, he decided to leave Helena behind and go and see the world. Perhaps to find work as a merc, having earned a taste for battle during the war.
