    Shadow’s Grasp

“Shadows reach out from every corner, alley-way and spot where the sun’s golden hands fail to touch. Quite the illusive tool for those low enough to seek cover in shadows.”

“One day in my lab, I fabricated a brilliant idea within my masterful mind. An idea any lesser would fail to fathom… I thought to myself - what if. What if, I could harness something similar to shadows - in a way to create a burst of smoke to quickly escape. So, I began to experiment, day after day as if I were obsessed with the topic. Eventually, I found a solution - a smoke bomb of sorts. Though it did have some detriments to the user, however - temporary coughing fits and burning of the eyes is a small price to pay for an easy getaway.”

-Notes of Saevel Venleth, Arch-Magister of The Alchemist’s Guild.

    Overview

Shadow’s Grasp is a solution contained in a smash-able glass bottle. Upon throwing it, smoke will fill the area. This is a useful potion to have in one's arsenal for a fast get-away.

    Effects

Once the glass bottle is thrown down, thus exploding - it will cause black smoke to fill the area. The smoke will continue to spread out for a few moments and will fill a small room in a matter of seconds. In out-doors, the smoke is less effective at spreading out though it is still quite viable. Upon being inside the smoke, one’s eyes will begin to burn and cause everyone inside - including the user to be temporarily blinded. Usually those unexpected will be stunned, which is avoidable from the user because they are ready for it and know what will happen.

Some common side effects are clouding and burning of the eyes to all affected and also coughing fits are common for those exposed to the smoke.

    Spoiler

The smoke spread has a maximum radius of 5 meters inside. It would likely be reduced to 3 meters outside due to wind and other forces at play. The smoke also lingers, and does not rise to the top, nor the bottom.

    - Side effects are clouding and burning of the eyes, this must be emoted if someone is exposed to the smoke. Coughing is optional to emote.

    - The maximum spread is 5 meters inside and 3 meters outside for the smoke.

    - The smoke is pitch black, therefore it is unable to be seen through.

    - Wearing goggles effectively stops the effects on eyes from being exposed to the smoke.

    - The smoke stays in the area for 15 OOC minutes before dissipating.

    - The smoke can be blown away by wind or an air evocationist quite easily.

    Preparation

    Spoiler

    INGREDIENTS

A sugar solution of distilled water

    Moderate Fire (Heat)

    Weak Fire (Destruction)

    Weak Fire (Darkness)

    Sootblack Ink

A decoction of the herbs must be prepared, and distilled for the proper symbols. This is added to the sugar solution when it has been purified the desired amount. The water must be boiled off slowly until the solution crystalizes. This salt is then added to the Sootblack (itself a mixture in water), forming the final potion. This must be quickly capped, as the smoke will spread from the bottle quickly. If it is left open, the potion will be quickly used up and ruined.

    Spoiler

    DISTRIBUTION MECHANICS

The bottle will be filled with a pure black liquid unless uncapped or thrown. Shadow’s grasp can remain in the bottle for an endless amount of time before use, only beginning to dissipate into the atmosphere once it is used.

    Each step takes 1 – 2 emotes.

    OOC Explanation

The potion’s effects are predicated on the rapid combustion of sugar, which creates an aerosol of the ink and quickly spreads it about. The combustion is caused by the heat symbol reacting with air, while the darkness symbol causes the remainder of the smoke effect, which would likely not be present with mundane ink.

    Alternative Preparation

    Aqua Vitae

    Moderate Air (Darkness)

    Weak Air (Travel/Motion )

A decoction of the symbols must be made in water in the usual way, and this must then be distilled. This distilled solution is then allowed to crystalize. The crystals are drained and dried, and this salt is dissolved in the aqua vitae, and quickly sealed.

    Spoiler

    DISTRIBUTION MECHANICS

    Each step takes 1 – 2 emotes.

    Alternative Redlines

    - This variation takes 3x the original time to spread, but may spread even if the bottle is simply uncorked.

    - This variation does not have any effect on the eyes of any exposed, but does cause mild lightheadedness from alcohol fumes.

    - This variation still blocks sight into and in its affected area.

    OOC Explanation

This potion mainly works via semi-magical symbols, but they are propagated by the evaporation of alcohol. The moderate darkness makes up for the lessened physical presence, and the weak travel causes hastened evaporation and dispersion.

    Evindal, ‘the Shepherd’

    _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

A young mali’fenn sat on a bench in a small village surrounded by veldt lands, the scenery much familiar to him and many of his close friends. A river would run in front of the bench - small minnows swimming about under the heat of the sun. He sat there, pressing his digits upon his temples as if pondering something deeply. A glimmering silver circlet with a dark amethyst placed in the middle sat atop his head. Evindal would take it off, staring into it for a great moment - time would seemingly slow down for him as he thrusts it into the air and throws it down into the river. The minnows would scatter and he’d stand up from his bench, moving to stomp off elsewhere into the savannah sunset. Each step feeling like a burden, a loud “CLANK!” sounding from his right boot each time it landed as he walks lopsidedly.

“What is a shepherd without his crook?” thought Evindal. He’d take his crook off the sling on his back - leaning against it after venturing further into the savannah. Sadness would envelop his face, he’d open his mouth to scream but then remembering he no longer can.

After what seemed like hours of walking, the mali’fenn had finally reached a small oasis with a tree in the middle. He’d sit down under the tree, a tear dripping from his eye. Evindal took out his notebook and quill shortly before beginning to write. “Perhaps this is my fate… perhaps It’s time my reign has ended. Perhaps I deserve what is happening to me, all the things I have done in the past. I am a horrible person.”, Evindal would pause, before continuing to write once again “Death is better than what might happen to me.” read the page after he’d finished.

Evindal would place his hand on his hilt, slowly unsheathing a gleaming, ornamental arrum blade. He’d put it up to his neck, as he sat there in the beating sun under a tree in a small oasis. Thoughts would course through his mind, memories of good and bad. All the bad he had ever done, he questioned himself on why he was doing it. The good thoughts brought a slight smile to his face before returning to despair.

A final tear would begin to drip down his face, he’d think a silent prayer before swiftly putting an end to himself with the blade.

To some, this may be fantastic news - for he truly was… cold as ice.

Evindal, ‘The Shepherd’, ‘The Defiler’, ‘The Pale Prince’ and many other names, is at last - deceased.

[!] Letters would be sent out to many people!

  5. Special Thanks To:

     The Event Team and Athera

    Written by: Ttsim and NOZGOD

Throughout our time on LOTC, we felt as though the event team has played an amazing part in everyone's entertainment. Event team is not given enough credit for the countless hours spent doing events, coming up with ideas and not being able to play personal characters. Further, it's not only the work they do - the event team is always fun to hang around and very helpful! ET has to deal with many things, especially as of late - many of which are uncalled for, yet they still trudge along, stronger than ever. Thank you, for the myriad of hours put in. Thank you, for the diligence and good work ethic. Thank you, for the compelling narratives you have created. Thank you event team. Whenever you hit that metaphorical wall, remember - deep down, we appreciate what you do. If it weren’t for the event team, LOTC would be bland with just the same old roleplay which gets repetitive. Many times I have been kept up late at night with friends doing an ET event, each event fuels our drive to continue playing.

Athera- everyone knows about it- The great event that would bring the server together- and let players new and old experience the wonders of lands of ancient and old. The Event team, alongside Tha_Mystery_Man, have worked countless days in attempts to make this experience the best it could possibly be. Unfortunately- as always- these things may go south- and that’s okay. The whole point of LOTC is to allow players to make the decisions, instead of NPCs, and that requires a lot of imagination to respond to the players whenever they emote. The Event team has a single focus- and that’s to make the experience of Lotc enjoyable.

Athera has been enjoyable, but it’s also been crazy- and that’s ok. This is something new, something different, something that’s taken so much time and love to craft- and it’s going to have hiccups because of this. The sheer amount of stress the ET’s must  have- especially when stuff goes wrong- is phenomenal. When the land permissions screwed up- and people had to wait for the event- the Event Team could have simply said “Wait ‘till tomorrow.” But they didn’t. They worked their asses off and fixed it- even when dozens of players waited, beginning to log off from boredom- they still kept at it. That kind of dedication is rarely seen even when people have professional jobs- so, thank you- you never gave up, and you never let us down.

If we may end this off- I know that things may turn wrong, and some of you may feel stress or anger, but I just want you all to remember- that we’re all still just… people. The Event Team aren’t all-seeing gods, nor do they have incredible RP power for their own personal characters. They’re just… normal people- just like any other player you’d see on Lotc, or any other man or woman on the street. We tend to deify those in positions of power- think that they can do no wrong- or that when they make a mistake, it’s heresy, and they should be removed, or we tend to speak ill of them, as if they were an inanimate object rather than a person. But they are just that- a person- someone who has zero clue what to do once **** hits the fan.

This post is running long so I’m just going to end this off with my thank you’s.

Thank you, Event Team, for working tirelessly to bring the community together in a time of duress, and ensure that we enjoy what the server is all about. Fun!

Thank you, The community, for sticking through thick and thin- and being patient whilst we search for a better and brighter future.

As always- thank you for reading this, and have a good day.

    ~TTSIM

    Thanks for everything!

  7. Trouble In Paradise…

“No one wants to see my success… is it out of fear? Jealousy? We will never know. I have been deprived of my speech, I have no tongue - my perfect ears have been mangled. Just when I thought I have been tortured enough, some others tried to deprive me and my well-wishers of paradise. They tried to frame me, they tried to ruin my name… they tried to take Millstone. Let this be shown as an example of what happens when someone tries to get in between a shepherd and his sheep. We will not leave survivors. Please, just let us have our paradise in peace!
