  1. Necromancy should have stronger interactions with the world and more of them. Balance combat spells but make rituals and the like overpowered. There should be heavy incentive to be an active necromancer that actually does things. It can take a long time to build a plot so finding ways to incentivize or speed up that process would be my go to with a rewrite.

    This is now canon.

(but no seriously I tried to search for info on Rivel but could not find any)

edit: Wait wait wait… isn’t Rivel the floating city from Athera?

edit 2: This lore would work for me if I was playing. It pulls in all the “simple” mechanics of Arcanism that were cultural fixations.

Though the minimum tier requirement was raised for abjurations and wards to be casted, it was more so done as a compromise for the fact that you would now be able to ward/abjure any magic you have previously had a T5 MA in before, as opposed to being restricted to MAs you currently have.

It makes sense that a mage would still have an instrinsic understanding of a magic they previously mastered, therefore allowing them to ward/abjure it even after they've dropped it. However, I could make it so that for MAs a mage currently has, T3 is the requirement, whereas to abjure MAs they once had before, they have had to be T5 during the time the MA was active.

The changes are really just so that abjuration and warding aren't entirely useless most of the time, and that there is more skill expression for experienced and practiced mages who can use more abjuration/warding against other mages.

    Thank you for the clarification.

The problems must be clearly addressed to come to a solution. A rant wouldn't offer proper solutions and recommendations, which I have included.

It's quite the opposite. Throughout the entire post, I have encouraged people to RPly create theories and cultures surrounding Voidal Magic. The only thing that I have discouraged in this post is scientific Magic RP due to the fact that it's overdone and doesn't contribute much that's interesting.

The antithesis of creation that houses cosmic horrors unbeknownst to mankind shouldn't be the source of generic fantasy Magic. The Void is employed as a proper narrative tool in other pieces of lore, and Voidal Magic is the outlier. It is misappropriation.

The server has many themes, and I don't think a single should be chosen, which I'm assuming you agree. However, lore that builds off other pieces should remain thematically consistent.

There's a clear line between being mystical and vague about Magic in roleplay and reading something out in character like a robot. Magic "science" has been apart of Voidal Magic culture for quite awhile, and few attempts have been made to deviate from it (which is why the lore reads so straightforward and blandly). That is why I've pointed this out.

Assuming you're referring to Arcanism/Celestialism, the former was only "free" in the regard that the lore was vague and easily abused.

Blaming older players isn't the point of this guide. It's simply fact. Older Voidal Magic players such as Toxzero, Phil, ShameJax, and many others pioneered and upheld the scientific Magic RP standard. The reason it's brought up, like I said, is that this old and oversaturated standard is rarely deviated from. I don't invalidate your experience either. If you had a good time, you had a good time. Good stuff.

I'm sorry, but spell lists are not the most evil thing ever. This was apart of lore reforms, which every Magic and Creature had to go through. There's still plenty you can do with Voidal Magic, as pretty much anything non-combative is incredibly versatile. Freedom in combat shouldn't be the pinnacle of RP.

That's how it works, unfortunately. A few bad apples spoil the whole bunch.

so basically, we agree on most things, but the format of this guide needs work. Your points are valid but let’s get some people together to make some user-friendly magic RP guides that cut out the BS.

  5. This isn’t a guide. It’s a rant.

“People aren’t doing things the way I want. They suck. Do what I want instead.” -> Is the impression I get from reading this.

I agree with some of what is being stated here like how magic lore should be open enough to leave the concept of light & dark out of the majority of its OOC context. The idea that magic should be motive driven is right on point as well. “I want the power” shouldn’t be an acceptable motive either. This is very much not reading as a guide though.

If the original use and intent of the void was to serve as an explanation for why fireballs are being slung around then it isn’t “misappropriation.” It simply isn’t the thematic choice you desire.  Not everyone on the server wants some sort of dark souls / cthulu trope all the time. The server might have too many different opposing magic themes & systems though & if one has to be chosen I’d much rather go with anything else besides a grimdark style.

Magic culture & magic science are the same thing. Does the system encourage the use of magic to demonstrate science? Maybe, but magic in science was a large part of the culture for a long time. The issue is that people wanted the lore to be so defined that the science part of it was undeniable. At the same time you had magics like mine that were the complete other end of the spectrum. So free & non-scientific that it was also game breaking.

It is easy to blame older players and those of us who eagerly crafted magic in the old, vague system. However the fact is that if you look back 3-5 years magic was cultural, it was whimsical, and it was spontaneous. It would be more beneficial to look at what allowed magic to have that cultural influence rather than continue with the current narrative that old magic & its users sucked. Even if we did at least we were having a heck of a good time with it.

As I see it magic is suffering the same way it always has. A small group of people set a new set of standards and people are pushing those standards to their limits, aka abusing the system. However now a lot of the creativity that drove day-to-day RP has been reduced to make way for carefully written spell lists. The culture of magic was expunged to ensure each subtype is adequately stocked with players.

While the old system was easily abused it also allowed for people like myself, who never had a single issue of abuse, to supply culture and roleplay in a DM-like fashion. You need some of that freedom back but in a format that is easily referenced.

    Now we have both ranted.

  6. I realize that you asked me to give this a read months ago and my response was “No, I like you too much to support you being staff” but if you still feel like this application is still worth it a couple months down the road, or if you have moved on to something else, know that you have my quiet support. I don’t want you to burn out like I did but this community would be better off with you in the moderator position. Just be careful not to lose those slivers of joy just so you can help others. It happened to me, turned me sour, but I know you are resilient enough to handle it.

    Put this one in, coach!

  7. I’ve been out of a working laptop as of last July & man this got me all sorts of frazzled that I can’t explore this map. I’ve been trying to explain to my friend IRL that I don’t play minecraft, I play LoTC. It’s the reason I got the game. Now I have an exciting video to explain it to them for me! You are the best!!

edit: also for years and years we have seen our own community members dissing our entire community cuz “hurdur mineman rp nerds still play this?”
so the positivity is very uplifting. We work with a medium just like others use DnD but we do it better because we do it together!

Unrelated, but I see you bring up Arcanism/Celestialism on near every post you make. Do you want a medal or something?

Not sure why you are acting like I **** in your coffee but dude... cold. Do you have one though? Asking for a friend.

It’s the one thing on LoTC I have a connection to & I’d like to input my opinion to something I was passionate about. Of course it’s all you will see from me. I’m a magic goblin, you see?

Also I’m not whining about being harassed. I’m whining about people taking every opportunity to criticize something that worked during that older iteration of LoTC magic (i.e. when everything was vague). It’s outdated & from a simpler time. It was obvious that it had to go come lore games.

It is okay for me to request that lore writers leave out the big middle finger taglines in their OOC sections though. I know they don’t have to listen but I can still request. I recognize that it’s unintentional but I’m still here, reading your lore, getting excited about it.

As for the lore I pinned; It’s been in lore channel for longer, hasn’t been talked about, and I thought seemed very similar in terms of aesthetics & theme. It seems like it could get in the way of the acceptance of this piece.

Oh, but after thinking about it I agree about the event idea. It’s up to the players to create culture around something. It doesn’t work to force it via events.

@Lhindir_my apologies if my initial comment was rather aggressive. Your lore is fine. I just get in a tude about lore sometimes.

    Purpose

The creative and artistic potential in Arcanism should not have suffered due to its one-sided and blatant existence as a combat Magic used to get an edge over other Magi. Arcane Sculpting’s creative freedom lies only in its ability to make weapons/objects that have no advantage in combat, bar minor resistance to moderately low or high temperature, whilst similarly having a crushing and utter weakness to thanium.

    Before I give feedback I’d like to state something;

I did not create Arcanism with any intention of it having an edge of other magi. I created a magic based on aesthetic and the freedom to choose what you did with it. It was largely used in events and the system of magic simply outgrew its standards. The only blatant thing about it is its diversity.

It is upsetting to see so many people who used my lore slandering me and my years of work just so they can pander to the current ST. I loved my magic, I was a master of its artistic uses, and I understood why it had to go. I also understand why people want something like it back but please all who attempt to re-write my **** be a little kinder. Its hard to read something only to see a tags like this on the end. I’d like to return to my magic someday instead if feeling ostracized.

    As for actual feedback;

Arcanism leaving the realm shouldn’t be explained via lore documents. It needs proper event lines if even just a small part returns. Otherwise it will still be missing the one thing that lead to its eventual hard shelving. Why? Why does it exist and what long term effects does it have on the world? How does this go from being a clique magic into being something cultural again?

It should also be noted that if this lore below is accepted then you would very likely be able to do arcane weaponry, art, and structures.

Homophobia implies a fear of the homosexual. Most “homophobic” players, in fact, associate homosexuals with disgust rather than fear.  I cite my good Arabic friend Robert Goodwill who was brought up religiously to frown upon homosexuality from childhood – to outright ban such views would be an infringement upon his religion. We often times bash heads over our own philosophies but I accept his traditional Islamist beliefs; to him, homosexuality is as offensive as homophobia is to others. Furthermore, I wonder how people would know you’re gay IRP in the first place – is it because you overtly discuss your sexual preference IRP and have a reputation for being an erotic role-player who flirts with the same sex? In truth, does anyone really want to surround themselves with roleplay perversion? In the eyes of LOTC law, prejudice against homosexuals IRP may become a grave crime; but in the eyes of their GOD, zealot RPers will be amongst him.

I have been in enough voice chats to know RP isn’t just RP. There is always OOC feelings mixed in. Not saying it should be done away with. I’m saying we should keep a closer eye on just how far we allow people to take it. In the end it is giving space to homophobes who find LoTC and the LGBTQ community are the ones paying the price.
