  2. Leonardo Nicatus cheers along his Nicatus family and comrades, the house fighting fiercely from start to end. As the battles end and the engagements diminish in size and frequency, he joins the Imperial Camp, resting and removing his armour and weapons, who are draped with blood, slime and other body parts. His first battle had gone quite well indeed.

  6. Draeris, I do believe those islands are controlled by me (Genoa) and Conor (Venice).
  7. The Republic of Genoa All trade deals are accepted by the Genoese, and their dominance in the West Mediterranean, although not near to as profitable as the Venetians' Eastern trade Empire, is bringing in more and more income, and at least one major connection to the East will hopefully be established through Serbia, where the Genoese request to set up several trade posts. Meanwhile, Admiral Andrea Scarluzzo and his Grand Fleet, battered and bloodied, having re-stocked in a the nearest Aragon port have returned to Genoa to tell the tale of the epic battle, reporting to the Senate. The battle was tipping against their favour, the sheer numbers overwhelming the Genoese, despite their skill and superior ships, yet then, just before their line seemed to break... A group of galleys, who had been behind the battle as reserves, yet had been engaged by a group of cogs and been maintained, had arrived, tipping the balance and letting the Genoese punch through the center. However, the advance was slow and costly, and Admiral Scarluzzo had realized that it was not worth it, and seeing the Moors raising flags of truce, retreated as well. The tale spreads like wildfire through the taverns and streets of Genoa and eventually all of Liguria, and revenge is wanted on the Moors. People sign up in masses for the navy, many being related to or having known some of the fallen Genoese. Although the most physically fit and those with previous experience are stationed on actual ships, most of the recruits are sent to work in the ship yards, who are working at the maximum to try and replace the losses and get the navy back up to good strength as soon as possible, with the crusades in mind. The recruits will learn more on ships and gain strength from the tough work, and will therefore hopefully be better equipped for when they will actually serve on the ships they're building. Around one third of the Genoese navy and best ships had been lost in the battle, but the remaining fleet is still a force to be reckoned with. As the shipyards work and work, the entire fleet is practically amassed around Genoa. Announcements are made to all the nations and their armies going on a crusade that Genoa is willing and ready to ship large amounts of troops to the Holy Land or Morocco even (for a fee). Hopefully the city will earn as richly from this as it did in the First Crusade.
  8. Morocco, you say your fleet at Gibraltar is 600 strong... I'm assuming most of those are minor ships and transports, or what? If you could list the different types of ships & how many of each type there is, that'd be helpful.
  9. The Republic of Genoa Two factors encouraged the Genoese attack... One, Aragon was slowly drifting towards Venice, and good relations needed to be re-established, and two, rhumours of a large Moor army assembling had reached Genoa. In all haste, a large naval force is ammassed, under the finest Admiral available to Genoa currently, Gran Admirale Andrea Fioruzzi. The force numbers an impressive 80 galleys, 100 galleons, 60 hulks and around 120 cogs ((hope these numbers are not OP)), some of them fresh from Genoese shipyards. They sail first to Malta, where they restock on water, weapons and food, before turning West and sailing at full speed towards Gibraltar... It is the obvious point for an army to cross, and since the large army could not be destroyed on land, they'd have to deal with them at sea, where Genoa was at its best. On the 6th day, Moroccan scout vessels would start reporting spottings of numerous sails on the horizon, and those who get too close are quickly obliterated. By three o'clock in the afternoon the fleet spots the Moor ships, and move in to engage... ((Mods decide the outcome?)) Meanwhile, in native Liguria and Genoa, the state starts to hire foreign. marine engineers and architects to aid with the construction and optimization of ships and shipyards to keep ahead of Venice. Ships also start to be moved to Hvar and Malta, where construction work continues.
  10. The Republic of Genoa The crews of the 4 remaining Genoese galleys watch in horror as a Brittanic cog rams the 5th galley at full speed, obliterating the cog and making a massive Hole in the galley's side, sending it slowly sinking down into the sea with its precious cargo. The 4 remaining galleys rain death and destruction on any cog who gets too close to the archers and X-bow, turning around and running for England. Once arrived at the nearest English port they drop off their valuable cargo and race home for Genoa. News of the attack spread quickly, yet the Genoese are informed the attack was by pirates, not by Britannic forces. The Senate is however still very sceptic. The newly conquered and bought islands of Hvar and Malta start going through radical construction and changes. The islands are to have 3 major forts each, overlooking the main port/bay in strategical positions. The islands both have large natural bays who prove perfect for a port, and the towns of the islands start to be moved and grow around these future ports. The projects however will take much time and work ((5 pages)). Construction of galleys, galleons and hulks continue back in Genoa.
  11. The Republic of Genoa To maintain the goodwill of the Pope, a luxurious gift is put forth and sent to Rome. It is a personal galley for the Pope, filled with lavishly decorated religious symbols, christened the "Pontifex Maximus". Although expensive to build, the Senate is confident it will pay off, and in yet another sign of loyalty to the church, send 5 galleys towards Norway, laden with weapons and money for their Scandinavian crusade. The convoy will arrive in a few months ((1 page)). The deal offered by Gwynedd for sheep is accepted, and the city's butchers and clothes-makers rejoice. Also, the offer called Venice smelly, so they had to accept. A force of 1,000 men aboard 10 galeasses and 20 galleys set off from Genoa, heading South. In a few weeks they reach their destination... Malta. The forces wait at the edge of the horizon until night sets, before sailing in quietly and landing on an uninhabited beach on the South-East side of the island, moving in quietly across the small island. The small villages and limited garrison proves little resistance, and by the end of the next day the island has fallen to Genoese control. The Senate, interested in acquiring more eastbound colonies, sends a party of diplomats to the King of Hungary, to discuss the purchase of the small island of Hvar, which would be a good place to build a port for Genoese merchants to use as a safe refugee and as a place to launch trade missions from, among other uses.
  12. The Republic of Genoa Recently, Genoa had started to grow in power and influence at a tremendous rate, just like their main rival, Venice. Because of the city-state's focus on the navy and its central position in the Mediterranean, the Republic's trade routes roamed far and wide. The little nation was ruled by a senate, and the democratic government brings happiness to many immigrants used to stricter monarchies. For, after all, if Genoa was as strict on ethnic groups and races as some of its neighbours, trade and relations would take a blow. The last crusade had been what had really boosted Genoa's riches and focus on dominance of the seas. Offering aid to the armies travelling to the Holy Land, and offering transport for a fee had proven a very profitable investment, and among trade posts and more open trade in the Middle Eastern waters, rewards had been awarded to the Genoese for their military aid as well. Now that a second crusade is brewing, the Senate doesn't hesitate to prepare and secure future transportation deals. A diplomat is sent to Rome, to declare to his Holiness, Pope Innocent II that in the case of a future crusade, Genoa would be there and willing to aid, in the name of Christianity (and money). To also attract the attention of the Pope and his cardinals in Rome, a cathedral is put in the works. It is to stand at the top of the hill at the entrance to the bay of Genoa, next to the legendary light house that already stands there, in a prime position for anyone passing by to admire. ((5 pages)) The entirety of the Genoese navy, 500 galleys and 250 galleasses, plus a variety of smaller ships such as cogs and normal trade ships, and even a few converted fishing boats, seeming very out-of-place. The harbour is filled, and people flock from far to admire the view. The ships have been amassed to improve organization and accounting for each vessel, yet are also subject to repairs, maintenance and modifications. The major vessels, galleys and galeasses start to have X-bows mounted on their decks, to be loaded with heavy bolts, to cripple the enemy ships as they get near, before the ramming and deck fighting starts. A new law also passes to compensate for the need for more ships, stating that any town or settlement on the coast with 2,000 or more citizens must have at least one shipyard, and that per 2,000 citizens after that, another shipyard is needed. Thus, who is not busy building and working on ships is building shipyards. An alliance is proposed with Aragon, to aid each other in conquest of the seas and islands of the Western Mediterranean, also proposing a trade deal for more trade posts and lower import and export taxes between the two.
  13. Skype Name (Recommended): Splitchris Nation: Republic of GENOA Reasonable Starting Military Strength (Ships, Soldiers): One of the mightiest navies of the Mediterranean, and around 15,000 men, being a mix of mercenaries, soldiers and cavalry. Backstory (If Any): I don't really have time to go into detail, but Genoa has recently finally achieved complete independence, and it's rivalry with the other maritime republics of Amalfi, Pisa and Venice is growing, it too trying to control the extremely profitable trade with the East. Their large navy and previous willingness to aid in the crusades make them a viable port to launch crusades from, which has proven to profit the city greatly before. Have You Read The Rules: Khaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan. How much of the nations history are you aware of: A fair amount, and still researching.
  14. Chad was lying below deck in his hammock, passing over the battle in his mind. He hadn't suffered any injuries, staying up in the mast while the enemy archers were busy with the raging battle below him, leaving him plenty of time to aim and reload properly. 7 kills was his total, most of them he'd hit in the chest or head, but one bolt had burrowed in a pirate's thigh, who had then stumbled off deck and drowned, unable to swim. As the adrenaline from the battle starts wearing off, he slowly drifted off to sleep.
  15. Chad shows Noach a little smile as he climbs up the mast to join them, muttering in a gruff voice, "Welcome to the party, son." As the ships come closer, Chad has to grip onto the mast as a volley zooms by, shaking it ominously. His legs dangling down, he takes aim as the pirates storm the ship, resting his sight on a commander of sorts who had stopped to beckon his men forwards from atop a barrel. Squeezing the trigger, the bolt darted through the air, letting out a dull thud as it lodged into the man's chest, knocking him down and dying. Raising a fist into the air and exclaiming, "Hah! Got ya smack on target, ya sh*t!" he started reloading his crossbow, scanning the mass-fight below for a new target.
  16. Chad ties his crossbow to his back and starts climbing the mast after Wilson, tying himself onto it to remain stable. He starts to load his crossbow, eyes fixed at the sails in the horizon.
  17. Chad was busy doing nothing when he's approached by a stern-looking sailor, pulling him out of the hammock he had chosen and pointing towards the staircase to the top deck with a grunt, the sailor got Chad to move up to the top deck. He emerges clutching his crossbow, something was definitely wrong... Blending in with the rest assembling, he awaits an explanation from Johnathan, his face showing a mixture of annoyance and confusion.
  18. Chad had dozed off on deck after the departure and Johnathan's announcement of plans, and made his way down the stairs to the lower areas of the ship as dusk approached. He stopped at the bottom as his ears picked up what seemed to be... music? Surely enough, twisting his head around he saw a woman and a man dancing along merrily as if this was some sort of royal ball. He raised his eyebrow at them questioningly, but nonetheless proceeded to find a box a dozen meters away from them where he sat down, unhooking his crossbow, starting his daily crossbow check, plucking at the string and testing the trigger, among other routine things, frowning as he tries to keep the music out, finding it rather annoying.
  19. Chad wears a grimaced expression as he walks up the plank to the ship, his head throbbing and stomach growling from his hangover from last night. He had listened to Johnathan about the quest, then, the sorrow of the slaughter of all his companions and fellow mercenary friends just two mere days earlier had caught up with him and he had blown all his money on ale and other alcoholic substances to block it out. Now, the hangover was catching up to him and a rocking ship out at sea did not sound like a good place to wait for it to pass. Some seaman welcomes him aboard the vessel, and is answered by a grunt, Chad really isn't in the mood for socializing right now. Sitting down in a corner and rubbing his forehead, he stares out at sea, waiting to depart. ((Sorry for mobile post, but I wanted to make a post before the ship leaves.))
  20. Characters Name: Chad Samenfeld Gender: Male Appearance: He stands at 1.86m, and has walnut-brown hair. His arm muscles are strong, and he wears chainmail armour under a purple tunic depicting two axes crossed over each other. On his back is a wooden shield, and fastened to his side is a crossbow, 20 bolts next to it. Type of Person (Examples being Knight, Lord, Peasant, Woodsmen): Mercenary Reason for accepting contract: His company of men were assaulted and killed a few days ago outside King's Landing, so he was left jobless and with no job experience outside killing people and shooting crossbow bolts at things. Short Biography (optional): Chad was raised by a blacksmith in King's Landing as just another kid, playing when and where he could and living in the smelly streets and cramped houses of the lower class. Through his father's work he took an interest in weapons, first from swords, to bows and then crossbows. But, because of the family's economical condition, he could not buy any of these to train with and use. So, one night he snuck away and stole a crossbow from his father's workshop, with some bolts, and ran away to see more exciting things and the open and vast landscapes of Westeros. He was soon recruited by a company of mercenary, where he gained experience, skill and saw many a battle. However, one night whilst returning to their barracks outside King's Landing, they were assaulted by numerous bandits, who had seen the company leader, holding the bag of money earned from fighting in the last conflict. The mercenaries were caught aback and the bandits outnumbered them, and soon everybody was slaughtered, except for Chad, who seeing the hopeless situation, had run for the nearby tavern instead, where he waited it out. The next morning he emerged, quite drunk, the sorrow of having lost all his comrades catching up with him, trying to find a job.
