Katerina Enswerp had remained beside Lorelei until the guards made her leave her father's lifeless, headless body behind. Her mother gave her a dagger, one with a hilt shaped like a charging bull.
"I love you, Kit. Remember that," Lorelei called after her eldest daughter.
"I love you too," Kit replied. She was tired, didn't understand how her home could be unsafe... But she still had her mother. Her mother would make sure she was safe. Right?
In the span of a mere hour, Katerina lost both of her parents. She clutched her sisters close to her at night, one of them still an infant, in the room that used to belong to their mother.
When asked later on what had happened, Kit repeated the words of Heinrik Ludovar, as she did not know the truth. "The monster killed them. It got them both."
