Character’s name: Maelyn Cal Character’s sex: Female Character’s race: Human Character’s age: Nineteen Biography: Maelyn grew up on a small homestead on the outskirts of Johannesburg. The only child of a humble grain miller, Maelyn spent much of her childhood alone. She roamed the countryside when she was not assisting her father with the mill, often dreaming of better days to come. Her life at home was comfortable, but Maelyn always felt that she deserved more. Her mother was very religious and encouraged the young girl to pray throughout the day. Her father, on the other hand, was a roddy-faced drunkard with nothing good to say about the Creator, nor the Church of the Canon for that matter. Maelyn had mixed feelings about the Church, but she figured that suffering through a boring Mass was a better fate than being forced into a stockade. In 1569, at the age of 13, Maelyn left home in search of a new life. With only the clothing on her back and a handful of Minas, Maelyn used the little money she had to purchase a seat on a trade caravan heading for the Archduchy of Lorraine. The journey was uncomfortable and cramped. After reaching Savoy, she fell ill and had no choice other than to turn back, lest she perish as a pauper in an unknown land. Wandering the trade route alone, she was held-up by a foul goblin. The wretched beast stole her boots and the little money she had left on her person. The young woman had expected a journey emblazoned with adventure and wealth, but instead, she found herself robbed and plagued. Covered in pox blisters, she returned home and swore to herself that she would never, ever, set off on her own again. Maelyn was betrothed to the son of a middle-class St. Karlsburg merchant at the age of eighteen. Upon meeting him, she found that he was hideously ugly and simply could not bear the thought of lying with him. Gathering what she could, Maelyn broke the promise she had made to herself and fled from her home. Her parents coughed up enough coin to hire a search party. In fear of being identified, Maelyn cut her hair short, sold her frock and dressed herself in boy’s clothing. She now wanders the Isles, searching for a purpose. Personality Traits: Maelyn is soft-spoken and secretive. She is very introverted and has trouble starting conversations. She has a tendency to take what is said too literally, often missing humor, irony and sarcasm. Maelyn is very observant and can be hyper-reactive to sensory input. Because of her social quirks, Maelyn has a hard time making friends. Ambitions: Maelyn is not sure what road she is headed down, but she feels that she deserves better than the cards she has been dealt. Strengths/Talents: Can quickly memorize complex maps, quick with her hands, creative Weaknesses/Inabilities: Questionable social skills, poor physical strength, emotional difficulties, illiterate Appearance: Maelyn is a plain-looking girl.
