To a rational being there is but one rule of conduct, justice, and one mode of ascertaining that rule, the exercise of his understanding.

William Godwin holds a unique form of utilitarianism called perfectionism which seeks to benefit the well-being of the whole by improving the rationalty of the individual; specifically, he states that the individual's self-autonomy should be impinged so that he may exercise his own moral judgement. True understanding cannot be found within institutions or hierarchies because didactic teachings do not give true moral understanding, which can only be self-taught through experience; thus understanding, or reasoning, is necessary for a just soul.
I accept Plato's theory of justice. Whatever floats your boat, I guess. He isn't sarcastic by any means. He is a philosopher.
