  4. The Language of Tiva

The  guiding hand of the woods

    Spoiler

Repost/Rewrite of my old post from like a year ago

tl;dr -- Flower culture where a bunch of elves, who still lived in the wilds without cities a hella long time ago, made flowers have meaning. Flowers were used as road markers in the forest, offerings to aspect, and worn on elves themselves as a show of who they are. Flower culture yay

    The Language of Tiva:

    A History

The Language of Tiva is a craft founded under the gazes of the wild mali of the forests, of whom tread within the winding roads of their forests. The craft aimed to recognize meaning within each individual flowers, gradually forming a language as the flowers began to weave itself unto the daily life of the elves. The Language of Tiva was a craft that eventually became dedicated to aiding many of the other traditions found within the society of the elves.

The language of Tiva gave meaning to the flowers, and gradually the flowers would be intertwined together to create a certain message for those able to comprehend it--whether it be through wreaths or petal lines.

    Spoiler

Afterwards of the exodus of elves lead by Irrin Sirame, a substantial amount of elves had decided to settle within the deep forests of the land. The tribes that had formed settled within lands that were wild and untamed, with no guidance as to how to navigate it at first. Nevertheless, with the lack of roads within their forests, Tiva was then initially formed as a way to signal which paths to take and which to avoid to ensure a safe journey within the deep forests. And thus came the beginning of Tiva.

As the elves had merged together in tribes referred to as seeds, the knowledge of Tiva only began to truly spread throughout the land by the nomadic seeds that shared this knowledge. The Language of Tiva persisted to integrate themselves within the different seeds. Nonetheless, though the nomadic seeds did indeed spread the craft of Tiva, the meaning of the flowers remained subjective to the each individual seeds. The Language of Tiva was not yet a language able to be comprehended from one seed to another, as each seed decided different meanings for each flower.

This only changed through the creation of the Omentahu by the grand prophet of the Mali’ame, Taynei. The Omentahu was a meeting presided by Taynei herself, in which all the seeds of the land was expected to attend. Within this meeting, where the seeds would exchange their knowledge, the language of Tiva was altered in order to make it comprehensive for all the seeds. It was only then that the Language of Tiva truly became united amongst the seeds.

Tiva bloomed, proceeding through grow under the nurturing care of the Seeds. The nature of Tiva only became more intricate; the best of those who knew the language able to boast stories through the weaving of the flowers. The ilmyumier (Seed tattoos) of Seeds may commonly have been greatly affected by the Language of Tiva.

The Downfall of Tiva began with Garthon’s Great War of Unity. The practice of Tiva became muddled between the divided seeds. Between the seeds that followed Garthon and those that followed Taynei, the meaning of many flowers became altered in order to prevent the other side from comprehending its meaning. The guidance of Tiva was no longer a craft to guide all elves from danger. Even as the war gradually ended, the practice of Tiva was no longer a topic of concern as the elves scrambled for order.

Finally, there came the last Omentahu between the seeds. Within this gathering, it was decided that the seeds would be abolished in favour of total unity--in a new land, far from the war-ravaged lands they currently lived in. Though it was a step towards order, the unification of seeds and abandonment of their homes would finally mark the end of Tiva. The Language began to lose its significance as the elves pursued lives under the looming walls of their large city within the new land of Aegis. They settled down within their walls and the priorly treasured language of Tiva dwindled from their mind. The arts of Tiva failed to root itself within the developing society, unable to prevail and consequently falling from common knowledge--each generation lacking a piece of knowledge from the previous. The practice would only then remain within the seeds who refused the plea of unity within the new city of Laurelin, seeds of whom chose to cling to the old ways rather than the new.

The Three Major Pillars of Tiva

    Offerings, Guidance, Identity

As the Language of Tiva gained more complexity throughout their life within the seeds, the language began to serve Three major pillars within the traditions of the elves. The language remained the same within these pillars, however their purpose altered.

    The First Pillar: The Aspects

    Spoiler

Amidst all the traditions of the mali of old, honoring the aspects has always been a significant tradition. It was common to create wreaths of flowers with the usual offering one would give to the Aspects--or perhaps, the wreath itself became the offering. Nevertheless, the flowers of Tiva aimed to give a deeper meaning to the offerings given to the Aspects. An example of this occurrence is to decorate the skull of an animal hunted with a wreath that symbolized the life of the hunter--perhaps it was the hunter’s first hunt, the prey being a rite of passage. The skull would then be adorned with the designated flowers as it is offered to the Aspects.

Flowers of Tiva meant as offerings to the aspects are often crafted to be wreaths.

Significant Flowers of The First Pillar:

    Spoiler

    • Vervain: For things dedicated to the Lady Cerridwen. Offerings that were directed at her oft would have these flowers adorning them. (Alternate: Sow Thistles)
    •
    • Snapdragons: For offerings dedicated to the Lord Cernunnos. Offerings that were directed at him oft would have these flowers adorning them.
    •
    • Wild Hyacinths: A symbol of gratitude and humility. The most common flowers found in offerings.

True to its original intention, the second Pillar of Tiva is about Guidance. The Language of Tiva was initially created to guide elves towards their destination, flowers intertwined together to symbolise signs within the woods.Guiding those astray in the woods, the flowers of Tiva are meant to be markings specialized for only those who may comprehend the language. Nevertheless, the flowers braided together with the intention of guiding those within the paths are often notably less dramatic than the flowers offered for the aspects. These flower. These flowers are then found within the hollows of trees---sometimes even hanging or coiling on the branches of trees.

Flowers of Tiva meant to guide those within the paths are often braided to become akin to a line or a rope, able to coil itself around tree branches.

    Significant Flowers:

    Spoiler

    • Calendula: Warning that the path ahead to be perilous, in abundance with death.
    •
    • Daffodil: The path is safe to pursue, often leading to a sanctuary.
    •
    • Dandelion: The home of elves lies ahead, often used by seeds who welcomed travellers.
    •
    • Begonia: The path ahead is the home of elves who prefer solitary, travellers are urged to not pursue these.
    •
    • Cattail: Sacred Land ahead, such as a grove or a shrine.
    •
    • Dahlia: The path taken to grounds that are known for being in abundance of animals to hunt.

    The Third Pillar: Identity

    Spoiler

The last pillar is dedicated into making the Language of Tiva honor identity. These flowers are intended to identify the identity of the person wearing it--whether it be their occupation, or merely age.

Flowers meant to signify one’s identity can be woven into wreaths or flower lines.

    Significant Flowers:

    Spoiler

    True Calling

The true calling is the first flower in any braid, representing the identity showing a overall commitments that drives this individual. One may still place their true calling as searching for answers, but as one might expect being close to 500 and never finding such may look like the individual is weak willed.

The size of the flower that starts the braid has the symbolic meaning of showing their long experience or dedicated to the calling. A warrior who has adorned a Gladiolus for centuries with a druid sustaining it will have one rather vibrant, healthy and large. As with all aged plants, elder trees and other ancient specimens of the genus species their longevity will tell to any druid.

The following flowers are associated with the following callings.

    Angrec ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angraecum)

Marker of an individual dedicated to the stewardship of nature, the people of Laureh’lin and the balance of the world. This is almost exclusively for the use of Druids.

    Gladiolus ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gladiolus

Marker of an individual dedicated to the art of martial prowess and war. Strategists, foot soldiers and all varieties of other men and women who have taken arms to use violence and skill at arms to defend that dear to them.

    Chrysanthemum ( https://sco.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrysanthemum)

Marker of an elf who has dedicated their career to arts and craftsmanship. These are most often seen worn on blacksmiths, sculptors, painters, fletchers and anyone else who’s job centers around skill in the creating of things.

    Mayflower ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epigaea_repens)

Mayflower is a sign of a person whom has not found their true calling. Very often will wood elves under one hundred years be adorned with such, and some might even go as far as to say it is unwise to remove your mayflower till you double the age of adulthood.

    Names

The name of a wood elf is taken out of a variety of phonetic characters produced by a variety of flowers innumerable to count. Many phonetics can be produced, seemingly containing all conceivable syllables. Few will ever master full fluency of the art of petal lines due to there being over sixteen thousand characters to consider plausible.

For the post part, it is assumed one may learn all the syllables used in common (english) over a relatively short period of time.

    Age

The flowers to represent age are divided to represent the four main stages of life. Childhood, youth, adulthood and eldership.

The following flowers represent the following stages of life:

    Freesia ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freesia)

Freesias are sprightly blossoms used to represent the earliest stage of elven life. Children under the age of 20 will wear Freesias on their petal lines. 20 being the benchmark age as it is when elves stop physically aging.

    Alcea ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcea)

Alceas are worn by young elves who are fully grown physically yet still considered children by elven society. This flower will be seen on elves between the age of 20-50

    Azalea ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Azalea )
Azaleas are used worn in the petal lines of those between the ages of 50 - 500. It marks adulthood, the middle stage of an elfs li
    fe.

    Aster ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aster_(genus) )

Asters are woven into the petal lines of elders. Elves are consider elders after the age of 500 and they wear this flower in their chain until their death.

    Conclusion:

This is just  some culture add on.. I love me my wood elf culture.

If you have an elf that came from a seed that still followed the language of Tiva, feel free to rp knowing about it. Most likely, they'd be from a seed that was an isolationist and still resided in thick woods. As far as I know, the Spriggans are the only creatures that use Tiva daily aside from the elves.

Didn't include a hell lot of flowers, just the ones with the most significance. Feel free to make up flowers and their meanings on your own, but the significant ones should stay the same imo. PM me if you feel like adding significant flowers to the list. Also, I am fully aware that I wrote a whole post about flower language.

[ What Magic will you be teaching? ]
    Fjarriauga - Frost Witch Magic

    [ Summarization of Magic ]

The curse of the Fjarriauga are only gifted unto women, though the origins of the curse unknown to most, of whom are burdened by their woes. Placed upon them by creatures known as the Frost Mothers, these women will then undergo changes to transform into a Fjarriauga--forevermore abandoning their original race. A newly-cursed woman witnesses their descend into the curse over the span of a year (1 irl week). These changes are both physical and mental.

By now, the cursed woman will not find relief in the comforts of normal food. Her mouth tastes like ash when consuming cooked food. Instead, the newly cursed Fja finds their craving satiated by the raw flesh of men--their appetite gnawing if the Fja rejects this change, to a point of eventual madness known as a state of being ‘Feral’. Nevertheless, the only other comfort these maidens will find are within the flesh of raw animals--yet even then, their appetite will only ever be satiated temporarily.

A Fjarriauga has the ability to disguise themselves, a measure necessary in order to hunt for food and to survive. Their disguises are not illusions--they are physical changes. Nevertheless, as these are physical changes, a Fja can never alter their appearance from a woman, or to something completely unrealistic. They must be able to envision it, and it cannot vary from their original form too much. Through examining their body, they may eventually notice that wounds upon their skins are like cracked ice--blood turning into slush, and cracks appearing from wounds received. Their body emits no heat by now, a hand with the chill of winter upon its skin. Thus, why even in disguises a Fjarriauga is often wearing measures to avoid bodily contacts.

Next comes their dominion over ice. As their body is now akin to the ice they control, a Fjarriauga receives immortality. Through ice, they are also able to control existing bodies of frozen water, or freeze the air around them to create more. This gift cannot be used should the temperature around them be hot, as such a temperature weakens a Frost Witch to a point where their magic and disguise fails. Depending on the severity of the temperature, a Frost witch may even have to avoid certain areas due to being completely unable to survive within it.

On the occasions that these women are revealed to be one of the Fjarriauga, by a particularly clever individual, they may offer favours as a token to gift the individual. These favours cannot be saved, be anything sexual, or result in any harm being given to the Witch’s coven/family. Should the witch be killed instead, their soul is dragged to the nearest altar to reform should they have no wish to die--consuming raw flesh in the form of ‘banshees’ in order to reform.

Recently came the revelation of the Altars. Created from a ‘seed’ created by a Frost mother and the body of a living man, an Altar is the source of the Sabbaths performed by a frost witch. These Sabbaths have different requirements, but ultimately they are created with the embedded magic of the Frost Witches, and result in the certain creations that are dependant on the type of Sabbath performed. From these altars also come the creation of cursed ice, an ingredient which may be used to create the newly discovered Thralls--servants of a coven who attain immortality in exchange for servitude.

[ Lesson Given to Students: ]

Amidst the Tundra found in the foreign land was a secluded space, in which the ice loomed as branching hands upon the travellers who dared to enter within. The bite of Father Winter’s breath remained upon the bellowing wind, showing little mercy even within the secluded area. Nevertheless, the two women within regarded the weather with nonchalance, their attention rapt upon each other as the taller one begins to speak.

“Your pleas fell only into the ears of Father Winter-” Andri’ante began, the plethora of sharpened teeth marking her for what she truly was despite her disguise. “--lest you wished to have attracted a band of men who would surely have cut you down for what you are.”

“I cannot stay here any longer!” Her pupil demanded, the newly cursed witch staring at the Frost mother with a luminous gaze. In turn, Andri’ante had merely looked down upon her--brows arched and the sharpened teeth bared in slight amusement. “For a year I remain within this… this… I need to go out again, Andr-mother. Mother, please.”

“Lest you wish to venture out into the world to proclaim yourself cursed by winter, you must learn to change.” Andri’ante turned from her pupil. When the witch turned back, the face her pupil met was a stranger’s. “Can you at least do that without whining? Whine one more time, and I’ll toss you to the wolves.”

Her pupil merely nodded--and Andri merely smiled at such.

“Come. We begin by using the simplest example--the appearance you once more everyday. Your original form.” Andri’ante continued, stepping towards her pupil as she did so. “Imagine once more. Brown hair and brown eyes, was it not? Convince yourself that you look like that once more, imagining the tips of your hair tumbling down in waves of brown. You yourself must believe that your appearance will alter to such. Let that image etch itself into your mind, gradually sinking in.”

As the Frost mother approached, her disguise had gradually melted away to reveal nothing but the true Fjarriauga she was.

To her, her pupil said nothing. Instead, the creature had opted to close her eyes and steadily began to pace her heavy breathing. It was not long before her pupil strayed from concentration. Her brows scrunched, features slowly turning into frustration before the pupil opened her eyes wide once more. “It’s not working! Mother, it’s taking too lo-”

Andri’ante placed a hand sharply upon her pupil’s shoulder. “What did I say? One more whine, and I’ll toss you to the wolves.” The frost mother stooped towards the height of her pupil, her amused smile replaced by an expectant gaze. “Whatever heartache you felt before this curse will be replaced by a sword physically imbued within your heart by any man who sees you in this form. Know this, until you learn how to control your power and defend yourself. Now, try again.”

Her pupil held her state for a moment, before faltering and looking away. The newly cursed witch repeated the preparation she had done prior, except this time she stayed in such a state longer that her expression  merely molded into concentration rather than irritation. Her student mumbled her appearance under her breath, hands curled to a fist. Gradually but surely, the roots of her hair began to darken whilst her skin coloured to a tanned peach. Though the witch had done this, she continued to mumble and keep her eyes harshly shut.

“You’re done,” Andri’ante declared, having seated herself in the process of waiting for her pupil. “Excellent work--second try, only. Congratulations. It warms my frigid little heart.”

Her pupil gaped as she opened her eyes to examine her features. She turned her head vigorously as if to catch glimpses of herself in the ice walls. Soon after she turned to her mother with a proud smile, to which Andri’ante shrugged in response with merely a touch of a smile back.  "I did it! I can go out now, can I not? Oh mother, please, please. I look nice, don't I? I look like me again!"

“Yes, yes. You look nice. Admire yourself later. We’re getting you weapons now.” The Frost mother grumbled as she began to stand once more, dusting the layers of snow from her coat. She did not look back to see if her pupil followed, merely offering a soft grunt as she trudged off. “Don’t trip on the way.”
