“Mama?”

 

“...”

 

“Mama wake up.”

 

“...”

 

Slowly her green orbs opened as she turned towards the child. Her grey tinted skin, framed by pale blond hair made the child stand out beautifully. Rin’s eyes adjusted to the light as she sat up, looking about the library.

 

“Mama, someone at door.”

 

Rin’su sighed as she slowly stood. Her small frame, once more emaciated from lack of care. She made her way downstairs to the door. Her hand gripping the handle before slowly opening it and taking in the familiar scent of plums. Her eyes trailed up to meet the dark purple orbs of her adopted father. Slowly she stepped aside, allowing him to enter.

 

“Grampy Hare!”

 

“Aye Ari! Look a’ ‘ow big ye got!”

 

The child ran to him and threw herself in his awaiting arms. Rin looked away as he spun the small child around, laughing as he showered her with kisses. Slowly he set her down and presented her with a birthday gift.

 

“Five years ahlr’dy. Such a ‘ealthy lass! ‘appy birt’day lil Ari. Now, ah need t’ speak t’ ye mot’er a moment!”

 

Ari took the gift with glee before looking at her mother. She almost lost the smile for a moment before nodding. She ran off to the library to open her gift. Rin made her way past the kitchen into the small grove in the house. She could feel Hareven’s eyes watching here.

 

“How long has he been gone?”

 

Rin sat down and sighed. Her hands gripped into fists as she looked away for a long moment. Hareven moved to sit beside her, waiting patiently for her to speak, to tell him what happened to his once happy girl. She could see the look of pain when her hands moved instead of her lips.

 

‘Four years now.’

 

“Rin...why aren’t you using your voice?”

 

‘I can’t.’

 

“Alright. It will return in due time. How are you holding up?”

 

‘As good as anyone.’

 

She watched as a look of regret passed over his eyes. She frowned, recognizing the look. He had done the same thing Valkriin did, except, his wife knew where he went. She wasn’t sure if that was worse. She remembered how much Hareven regretted what he had done, and how much he tried to make up for it. Her brother and sister were nice enough. But she prefered to keep distance from them.

 

“Do you know if he is going to come back?”

 

‘No. He is gone.’

 

“I am so sorry. Would you like another lesson?”

 

‘No.’

 

“Rin’su, you cannot keep hiding from the world. Think about Ari.”

 

‘Please go.’

 

Her hands shook as she signed the last words. He frowned as her eyes stayed from him. Taking a breath, he moved in and gave her a tight, reassuring hug. Her small form trembled as tears filled her eyes.

 

“Don’t forget how far you came. How strong you have become Rin. You know I am just a bird away.”

 

She nodded and slowly rose. She lead him to the door and held it open for him. Her eyes looking at him woefully before the door closed behind him. She was once more alone in her home with Arianora. She felt even more lost than before.
