Saint Adrian of Leuvaarden addressing the Imperial Court

The Question of Marriage Within the Church

The Church has, for many centuries, taken upon itself the sadness of rejecting those who serviced GOD’s flock through procreation, turning away the pious fathers of generations of faithful, diligent, and Godly children and grandchildren.

The reasoning behind this act was, as it was within the opening of the Council of Carolustadt, to keep pure the Holy Mother Church from the breaking of Chastity within her Clerical body, and to preserve her from hereditary or nepotistic hoarding of power, and eventual corruption.

Yet, the argument for allowing the pious fathers and husbands of the faithful to serve the Holy Mother Church as properly Ordained Ecclesiastical members challenged this notion. Citing that the Holy Mother Church permitted those who had laid with a woman to enter the Church, so long as they would uphold the virtue of Chastity once Ordained, and that should a man be married and have children, the keeping of Chastity between himself and his wife would be possible. Thus allowing a married man to take upon him the cloth and be Ordained as a Priest within the Holy Mother Church, without sullying the virtue of Chastity as any other man without marriage would do.

Over many hours, the Council deliberated over the matter, discussing nepotism towards the children of a married Priest within the Church, Chastity as it pertained to a married man, the titles of the Church and their safeguarding from hereditary inheritance, and the effects this would have on the Monastic life.

The Vote for allowing Married Men into the Ecclesia

After deliberations were carried through, and all in attendance had nothing to add, High Pontiff Siegmund I called the vote upon the matter.

Over the course of the next few hours, each member of the College of Bishops came forth to the ballot box stationed in the Cathedral of the Holy Martyrs. Each casting their vote with a solemn, silent, gesture.

Once all members had cast, and each sat waiting, High Pontiff Siegmund I stood before them all and began to tally them. Each vote casting suspense across the room, until the final vote was called.

At the end, the Council of Carolustadt had decided to allow married men to serve the Holy Mother Church as Ordained members of the Ecclesia.

His Holiness Siegmund, High Pontiff of the Church of the Canon, Metropolitan of Rhodesia, Successor of the High Priesthood of the Church, Supreme Pontiff of the Church of True Faith, Keeper of the Canon, Pilgrim to Aeldin, High Servant to the Exalted's Testaments, Humble Servant of the Faithful and Vicar of GOD, through the authority of the Council of Carolustadt, doth decree…

Canonist Law considering Married Men

Thus to be permitted from henceforth, all married men of the Canonist Faith are permitted to serve the Holy Mother Church as Neophytes, Ordained Priests, Ordained Bishops, and, should GOD shine upon them, enter the Pontificate and take the station of High Pontiff. All stations within the Monastic Communities are not affected by this change, with all Monastics remaining unmarried.

Men who are bound in Matrimony may only serve the Holy Mother Church if they meet the prescribed criteria:

1. They cease all sexual activity with their spouse one month before Ordainment, and

2. Their children are of sound age to be left unattended, should the needs of GOD’s flock require their absence

Those related by blood to the Men who seek to serve the Holy Mother Church shall be rejected from Ordainment should any of the prescribed criteria be filled:

1. Are born within two generations of the Ordained Man, and

2. Are bastard sons, or adopted sons

The titles of the Holy Mother Church are reaffirmed to be non-hereditary, that the Men in bounds of Matrimony shall not be related in any way to any man stationed below them should two of the same family serve the Holy Mother Church, and that if a Married Man should leave the service of the Holy Mother Church for any reason, their children and relations shall remain subject to the criteria laid out.
