FOREWORD

 

Across the symphony of customs and traditions known to Aevos, the opportunity to chance upon a novel way of life is inevitable, each as distinct as the lands from which they hail. Some are sanctified by blood, bound by the unbreakable ties of kinship. Others find unity in shared heritage and customs, shaped by the rhythms of their homeland. Finally, there are those who embody a culture not only by lineage, but by the spirit and devotion that defines their way of life. 

 

To document one’s own is a noble pursuit. In times of peace, it is crafted by poets; in times of war, it is remorsefully transcribed in all due haste. Yet, for those who are searching, the scrolls of old reveal an unyielding path to values and traditions almost entirely forgotten. Such is the Ivöri Creed.

 

The Ivöri people have revealed themselves in various epochs and regions throughout the world, subtly weaving their roots into the histories of other cultures while remaining anchored to the Alpine mountaintops from which they hail. In the pages that follow, their legacy is etched in permanence.

The Shared Continent

The origins of the Ivöri people remain elusive, though some say they share a kinship with the Daelish, hailing from an ancient land of misted peaks and emerald valleys. According to the oldest records, two ships appeared off Athera’s coast bearing men and women. Clad in finely woven tunics, rich woolen cloaks, and intricately embroidered sashes, each garment was fastened with polished silver clasps and adorned with symbols of their homeland. They arrived with a spirit as bold as their attire, filling the shore with melodies and reels. Each step was a dance of lively, carefree joy—unhardened by war and untouched by the trials awaiting them in this foreign land.

Upon reaching Athera’s highlands, the Ivöri sought even more perilous heights than even the most elevated, fortified of realms. Accustomed to scaling steep, rugged mountains, they chose peaks far above the relative safety of Aesterwald’s ridges, seeking the harsh, untouched landscapes that matched the fierce spirit of their people. In these lofty, treacherous heights, the Ivöri established their lives. They built schools, intricate social structures, and customs that took root amidst the mountain’s wild isolation. While they would sometimes descend into Aesterwald’s bustling settlements, bringing finely crafted garments, fine arts, and tales of their burrowed life, they rarely lingered. Stories of lawless bandits prowling the capital of Vanderfell solidified their preference for swift returns to their secluded, sharp homesteads.

Through their continued dealings with Aesterwald, the Ivöri people began to adopt the local tongue, weaving it into their native speech to create a rugged, melodic dialect all their own. As they ventured down to the bustling markets to share their spoils, they mingled with the Waldenian people, forming bonds—and sometimes falling in love. Their bilingual fluency and adaptability in both trade and conversation earned them admiration among the locals. In addition, the natural beauty, moral character, and adoration for high societal customs of the Ivöri people made them highly favorable suitors within Waldenian high society. However, the Ivöri always remained fiercely loyal to their own culture, still often retreating to their mountain strongholds and their kin after each journey. Shaped by the stark beauty and isolation of their alpine homeland, they became a respected, almost mythic force renowned for their unmatched allure and elusive nature.

In time, the Apostolic Kingdom of Aesterwald fell into ruin, leaving its mountains and cities vulnerable to lawlessness. Dark forces spread like wildfire, claiming the forsaken passes and pathways once trodden by noblemen. With a shortage of men to maintain order throughout the kingdom, the Ivörians, ever resourceful, organized themselves into their own fighting bands.  Fueled by their discipline and loyalty, they trained to a mastery of the disciplines of war.

These Ivörian fighters became known as expensive mercenaries, offering their efforts to defend the region in exchange for fortune and acclaim. Though they served as sellswords, the Ivörians always retained a fierce independence, taking only contracts they deemed worthy of their high stature. These bands that scaled the mountains, cloaked in distinctive white furs, were monikered “the Ivory” among common folk, a name that evolved into “Ivöri” by the people of Aesterwald. Though unseasoned, their keen instincts, adaptability, and orderly nature allowed them to make formidable professional soldiers. They quickly gained a reputation for their valor, resolve, and cunning in combat. Despite their newly born martial prowess, the strength and persistence of the marauders proved overwhelming, and soon the Kingdom faded as the Ivörians withdrew once more into their isolationist society.

 

As the Ivöri adapted to this new reality, darker forces emerged: twisted creatures and ancient terrors once long forgotten, now drawn to the bleeding and forsaken lands. These vile, hateful beings of darkness and corruption were like moths to the flame of decay, lurking in shadowed caverns and haunting the ruins of once-great strongholds. The Ivöri, who had once lent their warriors to the conflicts of mortal men, now found themselves locked in a battle of survival against forces of wickedness beyond human comprehension. The darkspawn knew no bounds, infiltrating and violating every facet of Ivörian life. Many soon fell under the beguiling influence of these arcane forces, introducing new tantalizing sins and indulgences to the Ivörian people. Once a society rooted in principles and honor, the Ivörian’s unity began to erode. As their people and values succumbed to the lure of dark powers, their highland culture plunged into hedonistic disorder.

 

Hope returned to the Ivöri only with the rise of a new leader: Alaric Keen. A brilliant strategist, indomitable mercenary, and insatiable visionary, Alaric saw clearly the tragic decay of his people. What was once a society of strength and purpose was now fractured by chaos and defiled by devilry. Through his charismatic leadership, he rallied the scattered mercenary bands into a unified force, the formidable Ivory Company. Under his command, the Company grew swiftly, mastering the ruthless art of hunting darkspawn. Alaric, however, knew that above all else, faithful purity would save his people. A devoted Canonist, Alaric’s absolute piety was the soul of the Ivörian resistance. As his influence swept across the Ivörian lands, so too did his Canonist faith and unwavering commitment to righteousness. Within a short time, all Ivörians not under the influence of darkness pledged their eternal souls to faithfully serve the Lord.

And so each day the Ivory Company patrolled the mountain paths, cleansing darkspawn in a scourging flame to drive them from those sacred peaks. Yet Alaric knew their mission was impossible to finish as it stood. The darkspawn had a deeper source, still lurking in the shadows, waiting to be destroyed. Without doing so, the invasion would only continue to increase in spite of the efforts of the Ivory Company. Their light was encompassed on all sides by darkness, and under threat of being strangled into extinction alongside the Ivöri themselves.

As the situation worsened and hope dimmed, Ivory Company scouts uncovered the hidden lair of a master lich lord: a forsaken library entombed deep within the mountain’s darkest caverns. The ancient tomes lining its shadowed halls pulsed with dark magic, feeding and empowering all who dared to wield it—and at the heart of this den of wickedness stood the Lich, their wretched leader of the armies of evil. Ever daring, Alaric Keen led a fearless assault on the library, setting fire to every last book and vanquishing the lich in a costly final battle. With the defeat of this dark power, the Ivöri rejoiced with one another and began to work towards restoring their culture once again. Upon his triumph, Alaric established a creed to forever unite his people under one shared identity of honor, and to ensure that the Ivöri would never again return to disgrace.

 

Through Alaric Keen’s valor and his fierce dedication to his people, he had secured a future for his people. The Ivöri’s foothold in the mountains remained unshakable through the days that followed. And in due time, Alaric gave up his spirit unto the Lord, being enshrined by his kin atop the peaks under which he lived and died. Peace within Ivöria would reign until the eventual destruction of the continent. Driven in terror from their mountain home, the Ivöri scattered into the wind, their presence faded into obscurity, their legacy slipping into the hidden pockets of time where stories become myth. Though the Ivöri had once flourished, fragmentation took hold as the cantons splintered off, leaving the safety of their shared community to form new, scattered enclaves within alien nations. Yet even in separation, they preserved the tales of their heritage. The creed which Alaric had once defined now lived on in memory and legend as a common identity, although it failed to unite its children. As generations passed, the prominence of the Ivörian people dimmed as they intermingled with their host cultures. Notably, they diffused into various cultures and traditions. To this day, subtle hints of Auvergnian, Illatian, and other influences remain within Ivöri dialects, customs, and artistry. The once-vibrant legacy of the Ivöri receded into whispers and shadows and vanished from the annals of history, being replaced by a lackadaisical cultural identity.

 

Visions, Kingmakers, and Imperials

High atop a barren peak where the wind bit like iron and clouds churned in restless layers, a lone figure ascended, each step deliberate and unyielding. Augustin Mohren was no stranger to the hardship of the heights; these peaks were often his sanctuary, a place to temper his grief and steel his resolve. But tonight, he climbed not for solace, but because something far older and more mysterious had called him—something as relentless as the winds themselves.

 

Since the untimely death of the woman he loved, Augustin’s life had become as frayed and worn as his Ivörian cloak. Once a celebrated mercenary and fierce guardian of Ivörian traditions, he had since devoted his life and loyalty to the last living remnant of the family he had sworn to defend: Elijah Keen. Together, they had forged their reputation across foreign lands, their bond as enduring as the creed once written by their forebears. But tonight, it was not Elijah who had summoned him to these peaks.

 

In dreams, he had glimpsed this summit and a figure shrouded in mist—a strange, almost mythical man who seemed to hold the answer to a question Augustin could scarcely name. And now, as he reached the mountain’s crest, a figure emerged through a break in the fog. Draped in layers of cloth and adorned with relics and charms, the figure seemed more apparition than man, yet his presence thrummed with purpose.

 

"Ben Jones," Augustin murmured, the name slipping from his lips with a familiarity that surprised him.

The man’s grin was sharp, his eyes gleaming with secrets from ages long past. "You’re not lost, are you, Augustin Mohren?"

 

Ben Jones—a famed circus master, the man whose name was whispered across nations as both myth and legend—stood before Augustin. With a knowing look, he extended his hand, offering a relic of immense weight: the original Ivöri Creed.

 

Destiny had brought them both to this peak, drawn by visions that bound them to one another with an unspoken understanding. Ben Jones explained that he and his forebears had held knowledge of the Keens for generations and maintained the Creed as his charge. He further declared that it was they who would restore the Ivörians to their rightful honor, with Elijah destined to reclaim the title of steward of the Ivöri people.

 

For generations, the Ivöri wandered the world without a homeland, resilient people who had scattered to survive. Elijah Keen, born in the southern Principality of Savoy, was a descendant of these exiles, raised in a land far from the northern mountains his ancestors once called home. Over time, the Ivöri had woven themselves into Savoyard society, embracing its customs and intermarrying with the locals, including in Elijah’s own family line.

 

Yet, the Ivöri’s ancient identity remained fractured. Driven by Augustin’s vision, Elijah sought out Prince Olivier the Younger’s court. With his charisma and fierce loyalty, Elijah rose in influence, ultimately securing the highlands of southern Savoy as a stronghold for the Ivöri. There, he established Kensford, a new Ivöri sanctuary, claiming its rugged peaks as their own.

 

For his loyalty and achievements in stewarding his people under the Ashford Sun, Elijah was granted the title of Baron of Kensford. He was further elevated to the legendary title of Kingmaker, crowning Prince Olivier and cementing his legacy within the annals of Savoy. Furthermore, with his influence and the growth of his people, he was appointed as commander of the Savoyard military, the Argent Legion.

 

Under Elijah’s rule, Kensford grew into a prosperous haven, nearly autonomous in governance and steeped in Ivöri customs. A cabinet, court system, and cultural practices flourished. Through Elijah’s leadership, the Ivöri’s legacy as a people of strength and tradition was reborn, echoing through the mountains of Kensford.

As the tides of the world shifted, so too did the legacy of the Ivöri. With the dissolution of Savoy and its integration into the Orenian Empire, the Ivöri found themselves entering a new era under imperial rule. Yet, even as Savoy’s sovereignty waned, the Ivöri spirit endured.

 

Guided by Elijah Keen, their steadfast leader and Kingmaker, the Ivöri played a pivotal role in the empire's affairs. As Philip III seized the courts and set for reform, Elijah stood by his side and eventually crowned him as Emperor. Under Orenian rule, the Ivöri were granted refuge high in the Arentanian Alps, where they constructed Castle Puremont as their stronghold. Now the Barony of Ames, the Ivöri retained autonomy under the imperial banner, preserving their customs and heritage. Further solidifying their influence, Elijah wed Valerie d’Azor, daughter of the Lord Chancellor. Furthermore, Elijah’s first born son and heir to the Ivöri stewardship, Vincent Keen, would go on to marry Philip III’s daughter, the Imperial Princess Victoria Augusta of Oren.

Ivörian culture blossomed within the stone halls of Puremont. Their distinctive clothing, adorned with symbols passed down through generations, became a proud reminder of their origins. Ancient songs filled the great hall, echoing the lore of the Keens and the early Ivöri warriors, while traditional feasts celebrated the Ivöri values of honor, kinship, and courage. Religious observances and the Canonist faith guided daily life, strengthening their bond as a people and affirming their identity within the greater world.

The Last Stand at Puremont

In the aftermath of the Brothers' War, the fortress of Puremont stood resilient, a testament to the strength of the Ivöri. Yet, despite its indomitable walls, a shadow of illness hung over their leader, Elijah Keen. Sickness had weakened him, sapping the vitality that had once unified and driven the Ivöri. With Elijah weakened, the Ivöri found themselves vulnerable just as revolution swept through the empire, testing their defenses as the conflict spread.

In a final, solemn act, Elijah departed Puremont under the cover of night. Driven by a quiet resolve, he mounted his horse and slipped past the watchful eyes of his own guards, leaving without a word. The Ivöri awoke to find their ‘sick’ leader gone, his silent exit both an enigma and a farewell.

It was Elijah’s heir, Vincent Keen, who took up the search. Vincent, devoted to his people and father’s legacy, traced Elijah’s path through mountain passes and lowland trails. His search led him to a sacred mountaintop where he found two relics: the creed of Alaric Keen, taken from the Puremont museum in the dead of the night by the elusive Lord, and the long lost blade of Alaric Keen. That which had once smote man, beast, devil, and Lich alike had been entombed with Alaric, and was presumed left in Ivöria as the people fled. Inexplicably, it now rested at the end of Elijah’s trails, on the highest, most holy peak of the Arentanian Alps. As for Elijah, he had vanished from the face of Al Maris. Despite weeks of searching, his remains were never found, and legend records that he walked with his ancestors in glory.

The Ivörians of Ames joined together for a mournful pilgrimage in memory of Elijah, as Ivöri tradition dictated for the passing of all great men since Alaric Keen. As the pilgrimage was underway, Oren faced revolution at the hands of Acre. By the Grace of God, as the revolutionaries ravaged their way through the Orenian countryside and razed the Imperial capital, the Ivörian people were not to be found, as they had fled in penitence. The revolutionaries, relentless in their determination, could not breach the glorious Castle Puremont’s walls by force. Yet they could besiege it, and so they did. With its skeleton guard remaining behind, Castle Puremont was taken by the Acreans. Such beauty concentrated in one place was an affront to the pillaging horde, and so the destruction of Castle Puremont was ordered. Indomitable as the castle was, the captors were forced to dismantle it brick by brick. The fortress, once a bastion of the Ivöri, was lost to the rubble of history, and the Ivöri, displaced from their home, now stood on the edge of an uncertain future. 

The Knights of Ivor

Vincent Keen, having assumed his father’s title as Baron of Ames, was informed prior to the end of his pilgrimage of the capture of Puremont. With dignity and a fierce loyalty to his heritage, he gathered the remnants of his people and led them into exile as the Knights of Ivor. Bound by the ancient Ivöri creed, these warriors became the exiled bearers of their culture. They carried forward from within the wilderness the legacy of Ames and the history of their people. The Knights of Ivor vowed to protect the Ivöri people, customs, and traditions as they withdrew into secluded the mountain enclaves as their forefathers before them had done, and once again became a people of whispers and legend. They existed through the end of Al Maris, and into the dawn of Aevos, as revenants of Imperial Oren, and their own historic people.

II. The Ivöri Creed

The Ivöri Creed, also known as the Creed of Alaric or Alaric’s Creed, is the sacred law of the Ivöri people. To this day, it endures through both oral tradition and written record. Crafted to unify the Ivöri identity in honor and faith, its tenets are respected by every Ivörian, though most ardently upheld by those deemed worthy of knighthood. For the common folk, these principles are woven gently into daily life, followed as a natural part of their heritage. For those of the knightly or aristocratic breeds, they are absolute laws governing both in life and death.

TENET I: THOU SHALT DEVOTE THYSELF TO GOD ALMIGHTY

• God is sovereign in all things, the beacon to which every path leads. To stray from God is to stray from humanity’s very essence, for He is the bedrock of Truth, Order, and all that is Good.

TENET II: THOU SHALT DISAVOW CHAOS AND CHAMPION ORDER

• Everything is ordered according to God’s will, and follows principled standards, as that is the nature of God. God, being the ultimate Order, speaks order into chaos. To follow Order, therefore, is to glorify and reflect God. Be not given over to passion, but by reason make your move.

TENET III: THOU SHALT LOCK SHIELDS IN KINDRED SPIRIT

• Your kin are bound not by blood alone, but by Honor, Faith, and in Purpose. Let each man beside you be as a fortress wall, bound to you in defense and respect. To the end, be Faithful to a friend. Serve your master with loyalty, and steward your servants with good will. Do not betray the bonds which are forged before God.

TENET IV: THOU SHALT ACT WITH PURPOSE AND ABSTAIN WITH EASE

• Avoid pursuits driven by ego, vanity, or indulgence. To act solely for the sake of action is misguided, but discipline is to act in accordance with a will for Good. Exercise intention over impulsivity, avoiding hedonism as is Honorable. Be unyielding in the pursuit of what is Good, as in the persecution of what is wicked.

TENET V: THOU SHALT MAKE THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE 

• Be the force that does not waver, bearing victory at all costs. If you must fight, then fight with unwavering Purpose; if you must fall, let it be with all Honor in pursuit of Good. In the face of both victory and defeat, stand fast and keep Faith. Stand ready at all times, should the path demand sacrifice.

TENET VI: THOU SHALT HONOR THE LAND IN WHICH THEE WALKEST

• The land is sacred; a sanctuary and steadfast refuge in times of strife. Honor its peaks and valleys, forests and rivers, for they provide shelter, sustenance, and guidance. Likewise, respect those who serve you as does the Land, who aid you with Intention. To betray such Loyalty is to betray the sanctity of the Land itself.

TENET VII: THOU SHALT EMBRACE THE RUGGED HEIGHTS

• The richest soil lies along the mountain’s sharpest ridges, where peaks cut the sky and the climb is treacherous. Seek these rugged heights and master them in all aspects of life. This is the way of the master, to tread where others dare not, choosing the burden of hardship over ease. Pursue greatness in your destiny, and excellence in all you do.

TENET VIII: THOU SHALT HONOR THE BLADE AND FORGO WITCHCRAFT

• Good steel shall never fail, nor disappoint. May your blade be borne with skill such that victory is without question. By sword and by shield, you shall persevere. The arcane is a path of deception, wielded to beguile the unwary and disrupt Order. Reject wholly those who turn to sorcery for power, for their soul is the price that is paid.

TENET IX: THOU SHALT LOVE TRUTH

• As God is the Truth, so must you love the Truth with your whole heart. In all dealings be honest, as such is Honorable. Be not given over to intrigue and subterfuge, as the wicked do, but by the light of day make your move. For God is Light, and so what is done in Light is done with Faith in God.

TENET X: THOU SHALT SUFFER NO EVIL

• Extinguish evil before it festers. Protect kin from the taint of corruption, and should it seep among our people, stand united to purge it. Never bear dishonor or unfaithfulness. In Righteousness, quell all iniquity without relenting. Make no peace with evil, and parlay not with the wicked. If all others falter, stand with God alone.

Language Naming Customs

Language

Throughout the years, the Ivöri have absorbed words from diverse languages, including Waldenian, Auverignian, and Illation. The Ivöri language is characterized by its melodic cadence, featuring smooth transitions between syllables and a harmonious blend of vowels and consonants. While it shares a similar structure with Waldenian, its musical quality distinguishes it from the sharper sounds of other cultures. Emphasis is placed on elongated vowel sounds and fluid consonantal connections, creating an enchanting rhythm.

Structure of Names
Ivöri names typically consist of a given name followed by a family name, reflecting their ancestral lineage. First names often have roots in nature, reflecting the landscape of the Ivöri homeland, while surnames may denote geographical features or family trades.

Given Names
Ivöri given names are often inspired by the elements, flora, or fauna of their mountainous surroundings. Examples might include:

• Alaric (noble ruler)
• Thalia (blooming)
• Gottlieb (God's love)
• Brunhilde (armored warrior)

Surnames
Surnames in Ivöri culture often highlight personal characteristics or ancestral ties, frequently taking the form of two elements combined. Examples include:

• Waldheim (forest home)
• Steinhauer (stone cutter)
• Bergström (mountain stream)

Cuisine

Food stands as one of the Ivöri's most cherished pursuits, who mainly see it as nourishment and a means to an end. Yet, their enjoyment of cuisine is never absent; they embrace their skill as a divine blessing, and celebrate it immensely so long as it distances from glutton. They are a people most renowned for their cheeses, tubers, and stews. 

Rootenpot - A pan-fried medley of grated roots and tubers, crisped to golden perfection and seasoned with highland herbs. This dish is a common breakfast, fueling Ivöri folk for a day of labor and ritual.

Ironpot Barley Stew - A thick, hearty stew of barley, mountain vegetables, and dried venison, slow-cooked over embers. A winter staple, it’s cherished for its warmth and nourishing richness.

Cinder Sausages - Smoked links made from mountain game, served with roasted wild greens or lentils. Cinder Sausages are savored at communal gatherings and seen as a simple yet powerful tribute to the Ivöri’s hunting heritage.

Fire-Kettle Fondue - A communal pot of melted curd cheese, mixed with dark herbs and wild spices. Chunks of hearth-baked bread are dipped into this rich, shared meal—a symbol of kinship and shared warmth.

Braided Hearth Bread - This thick-braided, golden loaf is baked over stones and served at family tables. Each piece, torn rather than sliced, holds the warmth and unity of the Ivöri household.

Rites of Passage

1. The Rite of the Lone Ascent (Die Einsame Besteigung)

The Rite of the Lone Ascent is a significant rite of passage for young Ivörian boys taken at the age of 16 sometime after the last snow. This solo journey takes them to the rugged mountain peaks, where they must survive despite the harsh terrain. The boys ascend to the highest observable peak, where they perform a yodeling ceremony to express their connection to the land and their newfound maturity.

• Each boy undertakes a solitary trek to the highest, most challenging peak, carrying a heavy pack filled with symbolic stones representing their personal aspirations.
• At the summit, they yodel—a traditional Ivöri expression that echoes through the mountains—symbolizing their transition into adulthood and their bond with the Ivöri heritage.
• After yodeling, they cast their stones down the mountain, signifying the release of their childhood dreams and embracing their responsibilities to achieve them as young men.

2. The Festival of Blossoms (Das Fest der Blüten)

The Festival of Blossoms is a vibrant and joyous celebration for Ivörian girls, symbolizing their transition into womanhood at the age of sixteen. This festive occasion is marked by colorful dresses, lively dances, and the exchange of gifts, creating a sense of community and shared joy.

Dress of Celebration: Each girl wears a beautifully crafted dress adorned with floral patterns, representing her individuality and the blossoming of her identity. The dresses are often handmade, symbolizing the love and support of their families.

Circle Dance of Unity: The highlight of the festival is the Circle Dance, where girls and women join hands and dance together, celebrating their strength and connection to one another. The rhythm of traditional Ivörian music fills the air, creating a lively atmosphere.

Gift Exchange Ceremony: At the center of the festival, the girls participate in a gift exchange, where they give and receive tokens of appreciation from their families and friends. These gifts, often handmade or meaningful, symbolize the bonds of friendship and support as they step into womanhood.

Winterwunder (Winter Wonder Festival)

• The Winterwunder festival is a heartwarming celebration of the winter season, uniting Ivöri families in joyous camaraderie. The event transforms the village into a winter wonderland, with stalls adorned in twinkling lights, offering hot fondue, spiced cider, and traditional winter dishes like ironpot barley stew and roasted chestnuts.

Ivöri architecture merges alpine elegance with fortified strength, crafting both homesteads and strongholds that withstand the harsh mountain climates. Homes are built on elevated granite foundations, insulated to brace against freezing temperatures and avalanches, while dense pine beams are expertly joined, forming robust walls that retain warmth and resist warping. Steeply pitched slate roofs, which extend beyond the walls in deep eaves, allow snow to slide off efficiently and prevent moisture buildup. Windows are narrow and recessed, with hand-carved shutters that bear mountain-inspired motifs, while interiors revolve around a grand stone hearth, lending a warm, communal feel amidst polished wood surfaces and exposed beams.

 

In addition to homes, Ivörians construct strategic castles and fortresses nestled in mountain passes or high cliffs to guard against threats. These structures are built with thick granite walls, narrow windows, and tall battlements for maximum defense, with interior keeps serving as barracks and armories for their famed mercenary fighters. Each fortress blends practicality with charm, balancing alpine design with military utility, reflecting the Ivörians’ deep-rooted pride in both their rugged landscape and resilient heritage.

Not solely a test of skill, this practice is a celebration of community and tradition, with each yodel reflecting the personality and pride of the performer. The Amesian Countryside, by Lukas Jones

 

One such artist was Lukas Jones. A celebrated artist in the Ivöri community, Lukas Jones is known for his vibrant landscapes and detailed portraits that capture the essence of Ivörian life. His work often highlights the breathtaking beauty of the alpine environment, blending natural elements with cultural motifs. One of his most renowned pieces, Amesian Countryside, depicts the Barony of Ames, showcasing the interplay of light across the mountains. Additionally, Jones has various paintings dedicated to Ivöri battles and ancient history.

 

Ben Jones, wearing his traditional Ivöri military uniform (which had been modified for circusry purposes), sketched in excruciating detail over the course of three decades by master artist and warrior Lukas Jones, it remained unpainted due to Lukas' belief that capturing a human in such detail and color would in turn capture their soul.

 

IV. Societal Structure

 

Family Structure

The Ivöri are renowned for their unwavering commitment to a traditional patriarchal clan-style family model. Under this structure, familial clans are led by a single patriarch, and can include as many extended family members as may be applicable.

Property such as real estate, fortunes, businesses, or titles are typically considered to belong to the family unit as a whole, and be stewarded over by the patriarchal figure, who has absolute authority and discretion in their management. Within the family unit, there exists a hierarchical family structure wherein elder family members are treated with deference.

Patriarchal succession is always passed on to a male, typically only upon the death of the incumbent. The successor is typically the eldest son of the incumbent. In cases where an eldest son is not capable of succeeding the incumbent patriarch, such as due to lack of faith, it may be passed to a younger son, sibling, or other figure in the family.

Gender roles within the Ivöri family structure exist on a basis of mutual respect and largely equal privileges. The genders typically do not encroach on each others’ worlds, allowing full autonomy to one another in prospective fields. Both genders are expected to render unconditional obedience to familiar authority, although the wielding of that authority is reserved for a small number of elder males. However, expectations and cultural norms are vastly different between males and females. These differences are most dramatically pronounced within noble and knightly classes due to the drastically increased sense of obligation and responsibility held by those castes, and far less rigid among commoners.

Males within Ivöri culture bear a very large degree of responsibility, and are especially expected to train in martial skills. There exists a proverb that every Ivörian man is a warrior, even if not a professional soldier. All Ivörian men are considered responsible for the physical security of their families and communities, and the bearing of arms is a typical everyday occurrence. While leadership qualities are typically only expected when applicable, such as in patriarch or an heir, competitions between men for positions of responsibility and leadership are not uncommon.

Females within Ivöri culture are typically concerned with social cohesion and homemaking. They are critical to the formation and maintenance of social groups and events, prolific in the arts, and often fervently committed to the growth and nurturing of their families. Ivörian women take great pride in maintaining their families’ public image through promoting beauty in all forms, and seek prestige in the creation and accumulation of social capital. It is seen as a symbol of destitution for females to work in strenuous manual labor, or highly dangerous jobs, and resultantly brings dishonor upon their families.

Honor is the foundation of an Ivörian’s reputation and integrity, rooted in the pursuit of a life marked by upright conduct. It demands a strict adherence to one’s word and responsibilities, as well as a duty to uphold the dignity of family, faith, and community. 

✤ Courage
Courage is a matter of character, defined by the ability to face threats and hardship without yielding. For the Ivöri, this value is essential for warriors and citizens alike, who must overcome fear to defend their people, beliefs, and principles.
✤ Faith
Faith binds the Ivöri people to a shared spiritual heritage, guiding their lives through devotion to God, their ancestors, and one another. It calls for reverence in thought and deed, connecting each individual to a divine purpose and providing strength in times of difficulty.
✤ Loyalty
Loyalty is the unbreakable bond of allegiance that an Ivöri swears to family, community, and leaders. This loyalty is lifelong, requiring an unwavering commitment to support, protect, and honor those with whom one’s fate is bound.
✤ Duty
Duty reflects an Ivörian’s responsibility to contribute meaningfully to the welfare and stability of society, regardless of personal cost. It is the call to serve family, subjects, and homeland with diligence and resolve, placing the collective above oneself for the sake of enduring peace and prosperity.

 

Hierarchy and Casts

 

The Ivöri are naturally drawn to well-defined roles within their society, guided by their cultural codes and traditions. As a result, they commonly organize into social classes that distinguish their wealth, status, and honor. Whether or not they possess established lands, the Ivöri people follow the same hierarchy and caste system, preserving their societal structure across all communities.

 

Patriziers (Patricians)

 

The Patriziers represent the aristocratic caste of Ivöri, their status inherited through noble bloodlines that command respect and honor across the land. Entrusted with the responsibility of protecting their people, Patriziers are often the ones who sponsor mercenary bands or knightly ventures, providing the financial and logistical support required for military campaigns or canton defenses. In return, the Knights uphold the security and honor of the canton, ensuring that the Patricians’ interests—and by extension, the wealth and prosperity of the canton—are safeguarded. Admission into the Patrizier caste is strictly regulated by cultural principles, reserved for those who demonstrate unwavering commitment to the Ivöri Creed and the Canonist faith. Typically, this distinction is granted to Knights who have proven their worth and dedication, embodying the virtues of Ivöri society. 

 

Ritterheren (Knightly Lords)

 

The Ivöri culture operates within a decentralized system of governance, organized into cantons that semi-autonomously govern themselves. Each canton is led by a Knight Lord (Ritterherr), a position earned through martial prowess and unwavering commitment to the principles of the Ivöri Creed. In this structure, knighthood represents the highest honor within Ivöri society. Only those who have proven their valor and adherence to the Creed may ascend to this prestigious level of leadership.

 

Knight Lords (Ritterherren) are entrusted by the Patriziers with the governance of their cantons, serving as protectors and guides who foster unity and order within their communities. Their authority is rooted in their ability to provide for and defend their people, ensuring that the ideals of the Ivöri way of life are upheld. Thus, it is considered the greatest privilege to be a knight, and the opportunity to steward one’s people serves as a powerful motivator for individuals aspiring to knighthood. Furthermore, these knights are often regarded as some of the wealthiest and most esteemed members of society, making the title highly coveted.

 

Kriegerkaste (Warrior Cast)

Warriors make up the bulk of Ivörian society. They are the soldiers and common knights that safeguard their people, earning them prestige and rank. While it is still common and encouraged to pursue various trades within Ivöri society, including the fine arts, professional soldiery has become a traditional path for many. Additionally, a significant portion of the Kriegerkaste become Söldner (mercenaries), opting for contracts that align with their cultural creed of honor while earning fame and compensation for their efforts. 

 

Arbeiterklasse (Working Cast)

Individuals who are not from a family of professional soldiers are identified as the Arbeiterklasse (working class), making up the majority of craftsmen, laborers, tradesmen, household staff, and municipal workers. They play a crucial role in sustaining the day-to-day life of the Ivöri, ensuring the smooth functioning of their communities.
