Juniper, upon hearing the news, shut herself away in her room for some time. She remembered running. She remembered crying. She remembered kneeling in the dirt as she wailed; begging, praying that her dear grandmother would somehow rise again from the flowers, as she had always done. She had always risen. The Amador girl had been told what death meant. She knew what it meant for her great-aunt Liridona and aunt Poppiya to return to Godan’s embrace… but how could Hauchmamej? How could she leave without a chance to say goodbye, without one last hug? For the rest of that night, all Esfir could do was cry in the arms of her family, praying that maybe her grandmother, the great Amaya of Venzia, was holding her too.
