What about having it be a mother dragon defending her nest? Too huge and old to move anymore, we can make her out if the wool and stuff. Her hatchlings could fly out and attack us, they could be enderdragons. Could be that ender dragons are simply young dragons who still have black baby scales, and no colorful adult scales yet :3 Other than that little idea snippet to help add a bit more, I cant think of anything, it seems like a very intresting event so far!
