Just ''picking up  a sword'' doesn't teach someone how to fight. In actuality a mage will lose concentration every single time someone launches a strike on them because they need to concentrate on the weapon incoming to avoid it, let they get hit. 

So doing fire evo for a month don' t mean jack. Uiron's practised with polearms as a character that four months old, and a mage in reality should probably draw a sword instead of trying to cast in close quaters combat.
