    The Morsgradic Food Initiative

Issued Spring of 1739 by Eleanor I

    1KshBx5U1BqO1RZlhwH_AGNVWeC49wlTKz2vDeHn

    ==

In understanding that the harsh winters can doom many stomachs to growl of emptiness and desperate hunger, the DUCHESS ELEANOR I alongside the ESTATES of MORSGRAD have set in motion the Morsgradic Food Initiative which consists of three major sections: FEASTS, RATIONS, and PRODUCTION.

    FEASTS

Annually, the Duchess shall hold a feast in tandem with the culinary experts of the City, so that the people of Morsgrad may enjoy the luxuries that the city offers. Not only will this be a time to eat, but for the citizens to speak with her Grace and attending Councilmen.

    RATIONS

To conclude each feast, attending citizens will be sent home with a sectioned ration for themselves and their family, including meats and crops, some of which are anticipated to be received through the newly approved Morsgradic Trade Initiative. Rations shall not be at a set amount, but shall fluctuate based on true need.

    PRODUCTION

Despite the climate and location of our dear Duchy, and the Morsgradic Trade Initiative, the people of Morsgrad shall still do their best to produce what they are able. The Ducal Throne shall set aside funds to obtain strains of crops and breeds of livestock that may last throughout our harsh winters. Additionally, upon expansion, we shall be developing more land to dedicate to agriculture and our registered laborers, alongside the new construction of a Hamlet outside of City walls.

  7. A Duchess’ Lament

    ===

    2019-10-19_19.02.03.png

It was a crisp and cold evening when the Duchess of Morsgrad decided to venture once more into the depths of her city. Accompanied by the First Steward and Lady in Waiting Marilena, the Duchess Eleanor’s intentions were solely on business associated with the city’s upkeep. As they found their way into the city square, however, the air shifted and sent a brisk chill down Eleanor’s spine. Three figures, named the All-Slayers, masked and hooded, stood within their path.

Held at the point of their captor’s blade and moving without protest, the ducal entourage was made to close the gates as they were hustled into their own keep. The three hooded assailants made quick work of the Duchess and her party, chaining them to the Duke’s own Ashwood Throne by their necks. Threatened with receiving brands, the Duchess whispered to her Lady, warning her that the pain wasn’t as bad as she thought it would be, as she herself had been branded once before. The shrieks of the two woman, as they were both branded on their arms, soon rang out through the Throne Hall, the scent of cooking flesh wafting towards the rescue party’s hiding spots. Eleanor, tugged forward by the chains around her neck, screamed for her husband, desperate for help. The masked figures threatened the assembly of captives, stating that they wouldn’t hesitate to spill the blood of the Duchess if any other than the Duke of Morsgrad himself entered. The rescuing party, who had climbed around the mountain’s face, remained hidden on the opposite sides of the pillars of the grand windows behind the Throne.

It was soon after this transpired that the party of rescuers decided to rush, led by Alaric, Lyanna, Septimus and the Duchess’ guard Draconius, arriving armed to the teeth to free her Grace and her Lady. The First All-Slayer who had stood by the Duchess was attacked from the side, stabbed through the middle by Chadmyr, a cowering Marilena shielding her eyes from the horror of the wound. The siblings of the Duke made a swift attempt at rescuing Duchess Eleanor herself, but found trouble with the heavy chains that bound her to the Throne. The All-Slayer lifted his blade once more, gazing down at the helpless woman.

“Please! No!” The Duchess wept, with a hand raised in attempt to shield herself from what was to come, “My baby!”

The Duchess was attacked in the moments after the failed attempt of escape, slashed deeply by the All-Slayer’s vicious blade. The long swathe carved into Eleanor’s skin was difficult to see, and her blood stained the red regal garments a deeper shade. Her safety became even more paramount as it registered to her subjects that she was months into her pregnancy, midsection now noticeably swollen.

Her fearsome assailant was killed a moment later at the hands of Draconius, Alaric, and an arrow to the head delivered by one brave woman named Rosie. However, in an act of what can only be explained as true and wicked witchcraft, the slain figure’s mutilated head combusted, sending destructive shrapnel erratically flying in all directions. To the dismay of one of the sorcerer’s partners in murder, one of the pieces of wayward bodily gore is what ended its own life. Such distraction gave the party enough time to rescue the ailing and wounded Duchess, alongside Marilena.

On their way to escape, the last of the All-Slayers, was overwhelmed and killed. The most courageous of these defeats was ushered in by the Duke’s own young sister, Lyanna, who ended the creature with a dagger plunged into its neck. It’s body was discarded over the ledge behind the throne, sending metal, bone and blood outward in all directions halfway through its free-fall.

A panicked rush of injured men and women to the clinic caught the attention of countless citizens, the Duchess’ blood staining the freshly fallen snow as she was carried by Alaric and Thora, along with that of the other wounded parties. Chaos reigned all around the small room in which Duchess Eleanor lay, fighting for her life, but in that room all was calm, akin to the eye of a storm. Draconius, injured in his own right, and Alaric worked together in order to quickly stitch and bandage the Duchess’ wound. It was only after a tense period of uncertainty and the use of steady hands that Her Grace’s severe back wound was stemmed from its bleeding. With the flurry of activity slowing, she lay on the bed and rested, under the close, vigilant watch of her loyal protector.

Though the events of the evening went unexplained and heavily questioned, the Duchess, her subjects and entourage would prepare for any follow-up incursion. An assault with such lethal intent rarely would occur without reason, and perhaps with some effort they might discover what that reason was, and uproot the source to prevent it from happening again.

The following day a funeral was held for the Councilman Kekzo who fell defending the Duchess, his loyal merchants and citizens alike mourning the loss.

    A Letter to Talon’s Grotto

    Issued 12th of Malin’s Welcome 1738

To the Mr Arthur of Talons Grotto

It has been brought to my attention that the actions of your Grotto officials have placed my citizens in grave danger. Through ineptitude or malicious intent information was rendered to bandits enabling them to ambush and cripple one of our trade caravans.

This act is the grossest breach of the peace between our nations and an unfounded attack on the sovereignty of my people and my ability to protect, lead and govern my men. I am but forced to issue a denouncement of this action and to take further measures to both remedy this offence and ensure for the safety and wealth of my people that this is not repeated.

               I am a benevolent man and offer you the following methods of resolution and redress, and implore you to follow them. To remedy your error, you must;

    1. An apology, written and recited by yourself, published for public consumption and a copy of which you shall present to me personally.

    2. Repay threefold the loss of minae, this price summing 15 000 minae, that the caravan suffered, or;

    3. Return the goods lost by the caravan and twofold the price of the goods, this price summing 5000 minae,

    A. The acceptable replacement for the goods lost shall consist of:

    a. A Crate of Iron

    b. A Crate of Alcohol

    c. Twelve Diamonds

    d. Five Bundles of Lapis

    e. Five Bundles of Gold

    or;

    4. Thirty fine Horse, Ass, or Llama to further allow our caravan to prosper, or;

    5. Forty head of cattle.

If you prove as equally fruitless in fulfilling this resolution as you do in protecting unarmed traders, a state of war will exist between the Holy Duchy of Morsgrad and Talons Grotto, and we will be making provision to prosecute the same. Your city shall be put to the flame and your citizens to the sword. Such a crime against my people cannot and will not go unpunished.

I pray you and yours make the sage choice, for the sake of your people.

A Letter from the Duchess to His Imperial Majesty

    Delivered Winter 1738

    My dearest cousin,

His Grace and I both lament our lack of availability to meet with you in lieu of filing a complaint to your secretaries.

It is a pain in my heart to be the one who informs you of the misbehavior displayed by your emissaries, in this case a certain John-Henry Pruvia. Visits akin to that of such a foreign ambassador do require prior notice and confirmation from the Ducal Throne, and all such scheduled meetings and assemblies pass through myself. When your Ambassador found himself meeting with myself instead of his assigned quarry - my husband, he was visibly and rudely displeased, insisting that he was to only entreat with the Duke himself.

When informed that he would be able to return unhindered during an open court session, Lord Pruvia attempted to outrank me within my own lands, stating he would meet with my husband through his title as Prince of Oren instead of that of an Ambassador, without knowing my relation to you, dear cousin, and when made aware had nothing to say in his defense. Once more, he professed that he had been sent by your Imperial self, and that he had to complete his task. I told him I would write to you an excusal and an account of what had happened, so that yourself and his office had record that he did indeed travel and speak with myself.

When I subsequently offered a packed bag of goods to ensure his well-provisioned return to Helena, he refused outright. Rather than being safely escorted out by my swordsmen, he deceptively stated his desire to tour our beloved city, and instead stalked the streets for my husband to try and overrule my decision. Once Godric was informed that our visitor had already met with me, John-Henry received the same response - to attend court, and thereafter departed with nary a courtesy’s farewell.

This unfortunate display of petulance and immaturity is not something we take lightly or appreciate within our Duchy, and we do hope that future envoys are better trained to avoid unfortunate occurrences such as this one. Yet, we also graciously acknowledge that such things can happen, and so do not begrudge you for it. Indeed I, your dear cousin, hope to visit you.

We wish you a long reign and the greatest fortune.

The inhabitants of Morsgrad are handed missives sealed with the red wax of the Ducal Throne by the Stewards of the City of Montburgh.

Upon opening the missive, they’d note two separate sheets: A letter, and a simple form.

With the restructuring of the Estates, upcoming expansion and housing reforms, the Ducal Throne has deemed it necessary to issue an Official Citizenry Census. Sincerely,

    The Duchess of Morsgrad, Eleanor

    ON RECENT AFFAIRS

    Concerning The Departed

Regarding recent turmoil within the Ducal State, those parties that do not make themselves present at the 4th Assembly of the Estates will be presumed to have voluntarily surrendered their status as members of the Estates. As a result all privileges rendered to those parties will be voided.

Concerning The Second Election of First Freeman

As Bodin’s term has now expired we shall elect a new First Freeman to represent the interests of the clanless citizens of the Ducal State. It is worth noting that only those individuals neither blooded in or bonded to an acknowledged clan may submit themselves for the position or vote for the available candidates.  To become a candidate and to vote, one must be a citizen of the Ducal State. To that end those unsure of their status with the Ducal State should confirm with the most immediately available officer of the Stewardry.

My Prayers for all our citizens on the eve of battle, your humble servant

    Godric,

    The Eternal Crusade

    Spoiler

‘No longer’ Godric thought to himself, his visage cold, harsh weather and the demands of war bringing hints of grey to his young features despite having seen barely twenty five winters. He walked briskly from the palace, shrouded in silence amidst the night of falling snow. In his hand, a beacon blazed. A torch, filled to the brim with ashen sap its brilliance blinded those who would not shield their eyes. So forward Godric marched, down from the palace stairs, more and more men of the great cliffed city falling into line behind him as he’d slowly proceed towards the flaming tree set in the middle of the city. Turning he’d face the gathered crowd, each woken by whispers and shakes. Rising wearily from their bed by the hearth tender of each home. The Duke was about in the middle of the night, surely there was business afoot.

Silhouetted by the Ash tree’s glow the young Duke turned to address the folk of Morsgrad. “To every man, death cometh soon or late” he’d say, his voice barely audible above the crackling flames, a shadow of a whisper. “We have but one life” he’d snarl the famous passion of his ancient bloodline rising within him “And to each of us falls the divine imperative, it is not enough that we merely exist, nor is it sufficient for us to avoid sin in ourselves alone. No. There is a greater sin, a sin committed ignorantly by far too many of us.” he’d exclaim, his eyes afire as he’d fall silent for but a moment “Tolerance”, the word would hang in the air, spat as if a cursed word, a word clad in filth and all the foulness of the world “There is no greater sin than tolerance, for he who tolerates sin, abets it ENDORSES IT. If we are to obey the divine. We can no longer tolerate sin in any capacity” with this Godric would fall silent, once more the shroud of silence would fall on the gathered, interrupted only by the elegant dancing of the falling snow.

With a fierce coldness to his voice Godric would croak, as if he’d not spoken for an eon “On this year, the seventeenth hundred and thirty seventh by the reckoning of man, I Godric, Duke of Morsgrad, do invoke my holy lineage to declare crusade. Eternal crusade. We shall wage war upon the witch, upon the sinner, upon the demon. No stone shall be left unturned, no coven shall escape the fires of wrath, no foul wytch or sorcerer shall escape the pyre.” With that he departed from the square, leaving the townfolk alone to the silence, to their thoughts, to the snow.

  15. The Duchess of Morsgrad reads carefully over the invitation, offering a little nod and a placid smile at the idea of such festivities. Carefully between gloved fingers, she folds the letter once more, departing her chambers to find her husband and alert him of the celebration.

  16. Eleanor somehow finds one of the simply scribed letters in her hands, scanning it over quickly. Soon after, she reaches forward to tuck it between the reflective surface and wooden framing of her mirror, just under a sketchy bust of her brother Owyn, which she gazes upon both fondly and with pride.

    Meeting of the Morsgradic Estates

Issued Spring of 1736 by Eleanor

    WQ-gF-L3wizrIx-HoOpVSFo8dQSb2bhBHbjA-seJRRB9ALuQEej2Wz4zARbeZZsfG4K6lGTw44yU4bwQ

The Meeting begins with the marking of attendance:

    Chief of Edvardsson | Present

    Chief of Faretto | Present

    Chief of Kaedric | Absent

Chief of Heodric | Absent, Representative Late

    Chief of Arden | Absent

    Chief of Fiscere | Absent

    Chief of Mournstone | Absent

Representative of the Freemen | Absent

    Patrician of Tiber | Present

    Patrician of Carrow | Present

    Patrician of Renault | Absent

    Patrician of Alstreim | Present

Chaired by Alderwoman Eleanor Helena, the meeting follows her own itinerary:

Eleanor brings the soon-to-be published Citizenry Census to the Estate’s attention, and that those who do not complete the census will not be considered a Citizen of Morsgrad. She follows that visitors and non-citizens, especially non-humans, don't particularly have any rights within the city walls. However, registered citizens do now, and will have many to come.

The recent introduction of Armitage, the healers in ownership the clinic, raises questions on the cost of health. She opens suggestion and comment on the topic of free care for registered citizens, and priced care for the rest, while the government supplies a yearly grant to Armitage so they may afford the supplies they need.

The Patrician of Tiber notes that Healthcare money will be coming from the taxes paid yearly by Citizens.

The Chief of Faretto seconds this and notes that outsider costs for care should not be so high that they scare people away from assistance.

The Duke reminds all that taxes have been halved after the previous Estate vote for them to be raised.

“Do the Estates agree on the Free Healthcare Act, for Registered Citizens through the Citizenry Census, alongside Government grants to Armitage through Tax Collection?”

All Chieftains and Patricians present call out in favor.

    Unanimously Passed.

Eleanor gives a long-winded speech about long winters and hunger. She proposes a Government initiative: The Morsen Food Initiative, to distribute food to the Freemen of the State and those in need. She notes that the jobs created by the previous Occupational Recruitment will assist in the collection of materials to distribute and keep Morsgrad off the road to starvation, and that the Government is steadily hiring farmers, miners, and loggers with the intent of buying back the materials they collect, and that it provides a decent salary, and the stores the Duchy needs to provide for its people.

The Alderwoman continues, swiftly brushing over several topics. She mentions that the location of Morsgrad brings up concern of lacking harvests, and for this reason, she believes it would be wise to begin trade with allied Nations, buying and trading necessities that the state may struggle to produce itself. She notes that those collecting and transporting such goods would be paid handsomely.

Eleanor adds that during the short summer months, the state may continue as normal and pay its own farmers how it would its miners and loggers. She suggests that a priority upon expansion would be sectioned farms, available for purchase by the common man for crop harvesting and raising of livestock.

The floor is here opened for the opinions of the Chieftains and Patricians:

Lord Patrician of Tiber suggests that he is able to write the King Pierce of Curon should the Estates wish to open trade with Allied Nations.

The Chief of Faretto suggests looking into breeds of livestock that would remain healthy through the winter months.

The Patrician of Alstreim makes no verbal agreement, but seems content with a few nods of his head.

Do the Estates support the Morsen Food Initiative, including the development of farmlands and crop trade with Allied Nations?”

All Chieftains and Patricians present call out in favor.

“The Morsen Food Initiative has been passed unanimously and shall begin development in the year 1736.”

    Unanimously Passed.

Eleanor petitions the Estates for the opinion on the use of recreational drugs due to the suggestion of several citizens.

The Chief of Faretto: “Non! This should not be allowed or even debated!”

The Patrician of Alstreim: “Drugs are goblin degeneracy.”

The Patrician of Tiber: “No, never.”

    Unanimously Failed.

The Estates are made aware by the Chief of Faretto that an entrance to the Temple has a location chosen and construction will begin soon.

The Heodric Representative, Azazel, arrives late:

Eleanor describes the idea for development of a hamlet outside the walls of Morsgrad. She notes that such a thing will be meant for refugees, and the Duchy’s laborers, mainly fishermen and farmers while they're working. Not much detail was provided with this idea, and so it was left to the Estates to discuss.

The Heodric Representative notes that men of his clan have wished for farmland, and would be grateful for such a development.

The Patrician of Tiber suggests that the Heodric act as the Governing Clan of the Hamlet.

Eleanor notes that the governing entity shall be discussed at a later time, and initiates a vote:

“Do the Estates approve of constructing a Hamlet outside our city for our laborers and those fleeing other nations?”

All Chieftains and Patricians present call out in favor.

    Unanimously Passed.

The floor was then opened to the Duke and the Estates to raise any additional ideas and concerns, but none were presented at that moment.

The Duke closes the session the spring session of the Estates in the Year 1736

A Missive from the Duke to the Pontiff

Respects and Well Wishes to the good Pontiff Daniel.

I shall take lack of Curates delegation as a lapse resulting from the vast demands of war. Rather than the insult it appears to be. I shall be sending a young ward of mine, an Edmund of Morsgrad into your care. He is precious to me, and to that end I expect his care to be of the utmost quality. For his leisure and pleasure I shall of course furnish appropriate funds. He has an insatiable appetite and a rather unfortunate taste for only the finest foods and drink. That aside he is of sharp wit and sharper tongue, occasionally prone to impudence. Perhaps he has developed a degree of arrogance due to his favoured upbringing in my own household. I cannot say for sure.

Regardless I render his education to you in the capacity of the Seminary at Ves. I do hope that once he has completed his studies therein he will be placed in the freshly designed Cathedral of my capital. In addition to his religious studies I will be hiring tutors of etiquette, diplomacy, warfare, horsemanship of history. I expect him to have the finest education available to mankind. Beyond that I shall be sending one of my personal guard to see to his security. Any harm that befalls him will not be taken lightly.

    THE PACT OF VEKRAFT

Signed on the 21st of Bruce’s Welcome, 1736

The ‘Orcs’ of Vekraft and the Duchy of Morsgrad reaffirm, through devotion and determination in upholding this accord, their purpose of establishing and safeguarding a peaceful and stable realm. With this accord, they seek to promote stability and prosperity, as well as laying the foundation for a strong alliance in the years to come.

The Terms, agreed upon by both signatories, are as followed:

[ I ] :  The Parties hereby agree that the cultural practices of either state should not be restricted or threatened by any signatories. Those who sign acknowledge the importance of the historical customs and heritage, promising to do everything within their influence to preserve such concepts when considered under threat by internal or external sources. In addition to such, as the Duchy of Morsgrad were the first contact that the ‘Orcs’ of Vekraft had with Humans, the ‘Orcs’ of Vekraft recognise them as the rulers of the snow lands. In return, the Duchy of Morsgrad recognise the ‘Orcs’ of Vekraft to be the true rulers of the sea by ancient right.

[ II ] :  The Parties hereby agree to establish a defensive alliance and aid one another to restore the security, independence and integrity of their respective realms should an armed attack occur.

[ III ] :  In the case wherein the far away seas of Vekraft or Mankind of Morsgrad finds it necessary to engage in offensive war, provided the mutual consent of both parties leaders, this pact may ascend into full military alliance for the duration of the conflict.

Those signed beneath pledge their names and respective nations to the terms in unanimity,  bound by blood to the oath in which they commit.

Marlow would wonder how this common Renatian ***** could read her thoughts, or note anything that she was thinking or saying within the privacy of her own home. This would mean the woman was a witch, a user of the void, a crime punishable by death by Red Faith law. Furthermore, Marlow wonders how someone with such an ego about being important to the duchy of MORSGRAD could get the name wrong. She also wonders why a common filth dares presume she wouldn’t continue communication with old friends after her contract ended, despite having not been paid her promised book.
