Sultan Mehmet Fatih sought to make his payment count and had his mercenaries serve alongside the Yeni Cheri or Janissary Corps. All the divisions assembled at the sight of one of the largest cannons forged and brought, the Dardanelles Gun. The Theodosian Walls that held the Ottomans at bay proved no longer impregnable at the quaking shots launched. The Byzantines tried as they could to provide return fire, but the majority of their forces couched and readied before the caved opening. As the Ottomans and Byzantines came to the urban fighting in the streets, a stench sprung itself among the ranks of soldiers.

As shields bashed and swords clashed, the noises of battle cloaked what came out from the alleys and corridors littered perpendicular to the streets nearest the Golden Gate. As formations pushed and pulled between each other, hordes of zombies began to throw themselves thoughtlessly upon shield, spear, and sword. With the streets flat, the zombies easily capitalized on the in-fighting and lack of awareness that brought masses of men to keel before the flanking of the Undead.

Soon, both Greek and Turk became wary of the screams of mutilated comrades and took to flee. The Greek fled inward the metropolis of Constantinople and the Turk fled outward. The mercenaries found themselves with both the city or the outside to flee, most likely able to maneuver without the Byzantines' suspicion.

OOC: Keep in mind, it is up to your collective efforts to learn about what is causing the zombie disease, how widespread, etc.

The dead are walking, I thought to myself as I turned the blade away, and smashed into the Turk, knocking him to the ground. Kneeling on my arms I took my dirk out and plunged it though his eye. When i took it out, a squelch noise sounded, and brain matter came out. Grimacing, I stood back up and took stock of my surroundings. I, Peter Fitzgerald, came all the way from England for this fight. The Greeks were gathering all the sell-swords they could get their hands on, and I happened to be a noble sell-sword. I marched into this city at the head of three hundred of my most loyal men, ready to help hold the city against the inevitable siege. As the Turks poured in and the situation deteriorated, reports of the dead walking reached me. Dismissing the idea as a rumor to spread fear, I had led my formation into the heart of a Jannissary unit embedded in a merchant district spraying bullets into retreating Greek spears from above. Brutal house to house fighting, we had had rooted them out and captured many of their arms. My men stared at the black powder weapons with awe, and I ordered them bundled and to be carried with us. As we emerged back onto the street from the multiple buildings, one of my men stumbled towards us, moaning. My second in command, a frenchmen named Renes approached the troop, asking what was wrong. The wounded solider embraced Renes and bit his throat out.

More seemingly stupefied troops from all the various sides flooded into the street, and I ordered my men back into the buildings. The walking dead were real it so seemed, and I had stumbled right into the heart of one of their hordes. Barricading the doors, and hunkering down, I had the Turk captives brought before me. My troops money counter knew their language best, and I ordered the Turks to teach us how to use their weapons. Having no choice, and intimidated by their dead comrades getting up and trying to eat them, they showed us. I sent men to the roofs with the Turks to show them, to begin thinning the horde. After so long, the time to break out arrived.

Smashing down the doors, me and my lot poured out. In the dense melee that ensued, we had no time for formation. In the most frantic fight for survival I ever had, it was a close call. Pushing our captive turks in front of us to occupy the dead, we were able to push through. Not bothering to form up, we simply ran in blind panic from the sounds of the captives and our comrades being eaten alive. Some of my men carried the Turk's curious guns, and shot any who got too near us. We reached a district still being held by Greeks, and were ordered to advance on a Turk formation heading towards a noble district. I took stock of my troops, and was horrified. Of the full three hundred I brought into the fight, only forty remained. I told the greeks of our condition, and they grudgingly lent me troops of their own for the advance. When I warned them of the walking dead, they simply laughed and told me to go do my dirty work.

My men and our Greek allies had took the Turk formation head on, and were routing them. Horrified screams and panicked orders reached my ears, and I looked behind the Turk formation. The dead....in their hundreds were marching in a silent procession into the backs of the Turks. "Fall back!" I roared, as the Greeks still believing the rumors to be false stood in stupefied horror at the dead walking. Punching their officer to the ground, I snapped their reverie. Hauling ass back to Greek lines, they started laughing and cat calling my retreat. They all grew silent as they saw what came behind my tattered command, the walking dead. Scrambling to lower pikes and form up, they ushered my men through their lines.

In the heart of the city and Greek defense, my men puked, wept, bled, and slept. We were off duty for now, until a Greek needed fodder for his plans. Now barely twenty men, we silently waited for the order that would send us to our deaths.
