Where to find them, how to build them.

Rivers aren't hard at all to make, it's simply the decorating that makes them look nice. To start off you'll want to find a place that you will dig your river; once you have this place, begin digging a 1 block deep layout of your river. Make sure that your river has twists and turns, no river is completely straight. If you're not happy with the shape of your river you can simply change the shape. Once you've got that done simply fill it with water and it should look something like this;

Notice how mine curves around things, well rivers naturally do that. Implementing the river into the surroundings will make it look even better.

Now that we actually have the river, we can begin making it look good! To start off we'll need to texture the actual river and make it look more appealing. To do so we're going to be putting sediment blocks like gravel, sand and clay along the sides and on the bottom of the river. Just knock out a few blocks along the side of the river and begin replacing them with a mixture of those blocks. Rivers also naturally erode their surroundings so this will also make the river look more realistic. It'll look something like this;

Now that we've textured the sides of the river we can texture the bottom. To do so you may want to first make your river a little deeper first - if that's the case break a few blocks under the water in the middle of the river. Don't break every block under the water as no river is 6ft deep everywhere. It's shallower at the sides and then gets deeper as you go into the middle.

Now you can simply texture the bottom of the river with the same mixture of blocks;

The river is essentially complete at this point, it just needs a lick of paint to make it look more natural. Since it's a body of water - grass and other flora will be in plenty supply around it. You can even place a tree along the bank of the river, or put a small farm next to it. This is where you get to be creative; perhaps you're doing a river in an ice biome, so you can maybe put ice blocks around the edges of the river. This is how mine turned out;
