Dispossessed Destiny

A series of letters from the Northern Frontier by one Klaus von Orange, detailing his Majesty’s expedition into the great wild woods in the dispossessed lands of Suffonia.

Dearest Johann,

It is day three of the expedition and supplies are running low. His Majesty, the Lord Palatine, Ser Siegmund and I have lost track of Prince Rupert. We seemed to get separated as his horse took poorly to the harsh trees of the north, we fear he may be dead in these unhallowed woods, but we each know in our heart of hearts he would’ve died a hero, establishing these new borders for our noble countrymen back in Reza to settle.

Night has fallen now and still no sign of our Prince, though King Sigismund remains heroic as ever. We found a clearing to the tangled north of Mont Saint Catherine, outside of Kaedreni borders, on which to set up camp. “This land I claim for my Kingdom! May my vassals use it well.” he roared into the night, planting our brilliant yellow and black flag without even needing to dismount his horse. I know now I am in good hands, with these great men of Haense.

To my fellow squire,

It is day six of our expedition and we have depleted our food reserves. Astonishingly, though, it would seem I’ve eaten better since Lord Otto, Ser Siegmund and the King started hunting wild game for our nourishment instead. Even in the former pair’s old age, they remain expert trappers and huntsmen, whilst his Majesty’s patience with a bow is beyond compare. Truly these are great men to whom we entrust the running of our nation! Due to a lack of hay out here in the woods, I was forced to release my steed in hopes he might find his way back to Reza on his own. My prayers are with the stallion Maurice. Cheers for “The Carrion North” have been common in our fireside gatherings at night, though... And they make me feel at home.

We have established two, possibly three outposts now that his Majesty wishes to enfeoff to the great houses of the realm. Such a generous monarch... Risking life and limb to appease his vassal lords! It seems with each progressive plot of land we mark up on our maps in these roguish backwoods the Suffonians once inhabited, the party grows more courageous. I begin to imagine how the first Men must’ve felt when settling the new shores of Asulon, after the fall of Aegis. Perhaps there is something inherent in the blood of all men, to conquer and settle and thrive

These pondering give me drive, Johann, fear not for me as the expedition passes its mid-point,
Klaus

Dear Johann,

Today marks the tenth day of the expedition, as well as our final site for noble settlement. We’re relieved to be rejoined by Prince Rupert and Lord Otto fancies it a four day journey back to Reza if we go straight (not needing to draw any further borders), meaning we should be greeted back in time for a spring festival house Amador will be holding in their Barony on the 16th.

The better part of a month I’ve spent out here in the dispossessed lands of the treacherous Suffonians, glancing to ruins of their old huts and Telemari wagons. I trust we have lain a suitable foundation for the Counts and Barons of our Kingdom to return and build estates and plantations. There was even talk of a railroad someday linking these to our capital, though only time will tell. One thing is for certain, our King has carved up this forgotten taiga for his people, and planted a Hanseti-Ruskan flag in whatever lands he’s found suitable for his subjects.

I entered these woods a boy, and now begin my ride back to civilisation a man. I will see you soon brother,
Klaus
