Archmage_Cataris 622 Share Posted October 7, 2011 ((Short story on the actual events held in Cataris' room at the Vonschlichten Inn prior to his death)) Cataris dropped his quill, closed the book and slid it back behind his chest. He turned around and walked over to his jukebox, he placed a green and black coloured music disc in the jukebox. He had bought the music disc from some Dwarf back when he visited Kal’ Urguan for a few weeks. As the music started to play, he sat down in a chair he had placed in the middle of his room, facing the door. Cataris had lived in this inn the majority of his life, he saw this place back when he was in his prime, he stood outside a ruined home built inside a mountain, Nitholiak clasped his shoulder and said “One day, everyone will come here”, And that they did. The Vonschlichten Inn was a fairly popular place for travellers to stop by, though his best friend for many years, Nitholiak, had been missing for almost 10 years now. His days were filled with death, it surrounded him daily, and it called his name, it was so seductive to his ears, the eternal peace. Here he sat, in the middle of his room, alone. Cataris despised any ale, he would never drink, not even on an occasion such as a wedding, though tonight, he drank, and he drank, and he drank. He tried as best to drown his sorrows, though the more he drank, the worse it got. He lived a few stories high, up into the mountain, and the only one to own a balcony in the inn on this side of the mountain, facing the Kings Road. The music was filled with sadness and sorrow; it’s how he has always liked his music. He sipped once more at his ale, the night grew darker, and it seemed all were sleeping in the inn at this hour. He had seen 47 years, he had lived a good life, he achieved many things most common men such as himself could never have achieved in 100 lives. He sat back deep into the chair, sipping at his ale. He listened intently, apart from the snoring of Lance from downstairs, he heard footsteps. A shadow passed underneath his door. Suddenly the door slammed open, the aggressor wore all black and his face hidden in a mask. Cataris got up, spilled the remaining ale on the floor and threw the mug at the assailant, the masked man dodged the mug, it smashed in a hail of glass upon the wall. Cataris stood there ready to block any blow, the masked men walked forward, attempting to punch Cataris’ face, though Cataris was getting old and was not as quick as he once was, the blow struck, an explosion of teeth and blood flew out of Cataris’ mouth. Cataris attempted to punch the man back, though the thrown punch was easily blocked and in turn Cataris’ was punched in the stomach, leaving him breathless, Cataris fell to his knees. Cataris’ lurched up onto his feet, attempting to counter-attack, though the masked man fluidly moved to the side, dodging the blow, Cataris’ clenched hand met the wall, the wood snapped and splintered where his fist had landed. The man grabbed Cataris by the neck, lifting him up into the air and dropping Cataris down into his wooden chair, sending the chair and Cataris crashing to the ground. Cataris got out of what remained of the chair. The man picked Cataris up and threw him across the room; Cataris went sprawling against the hard cobblestone. Cataris looked down at the blood that was now covering the cobblestone, he saw his reflection, his scar now fully covered in blood, and he laughed. Cataris tried to get back up, but his strength and age failed him. The man kicked Cataris in the gut. The assailant grabbed Cataris by the arm and dragged him across the room and out onto his balcony, the man stood Cataris upright against the balcony railing, he punched Cataris in the face, once, twice, thrice. The man continued punching Cataris in the face till it was undiscernible which side was really scarred. Cataris was phasing in and out of unconsciousness. Cataris leaned back against the railing. The masked man landed one final blow, sending Cataris toppling over the side of the railing. Cataris opened his blood soaked eyes, to see the ground rising towards him. He felt no fear, only the sweet final embrace of death as it held its arms out for him.
