Mama's Boy

In the bowels of Castle Kato, young Ena reeled and suffered. He had been born without eyes and lived his entire life thus far unknowing what the world around him looked like - a product of the Second Yokai War’s damage upon the populace of Koyo-Kuni. His mother was kind to him though and blamed it on his brother Daisuke taking his fish rations while they shared space in the Stork’s gullet. And while such an anecdote worked on him as a child, when it came down to becoming a young man he felt he only held down the other two members of their squad Dai-Gurren in the Sakura-Gakure Ashigaru. When it came time to finally help their mother travel on vacation via palanquin, he was a burden and continually dropped his mother. He secluded himself and fell into depression after her (unrelated) death and the izakaya was left without its owner. Upon news that his brother and cousin might be going to war, Ena clasped his hands together and attempted to pray for perhaps his first time.

“I need to be useful beyond Rank F, I need to fight alongside brevver and Honda…Kami, GOD, ANYONE…  I need some help, I want to be independent…” called out the irreligious youth as he sought out any form of help in the darkness of the void. But nothing responded yet for he bore no strong beliefs in the divine that have left him damned at birth. He did not know all of the kami or who would help him. He began to drift off then into a feverish dream, the last of his pleas guided to his once biggest supporter in life - his mother Kato Mei.

((If the Seer FA is accepted, Ena would have the following vision.))

Spoiler

In the darkness of the void, an ethereal light manifested and a woman came into the vision of Ena within his dream unlike anything he had ever seen before, but once the woman spoke there was a familiarity Ena recognized clearly but was left awestruck.

“Okaasan loves you both so much, Ena - a love without bounds even after death.” The ethereal woman would reach her hands out bearing the dark tinted spectacles of the Great Ancestor over Ena’s face where his eyes should have been. “Keep covered, and I will be your sight. Our little secret - tell no one, not even your brother. He might get jealous,” The ethereal woman chuckled and then Ena awoke suddenly from the dream reinvigorated by the idea that his mother had never left him and he sought out some proper covering in hopes of seeing a world he was unable to before.
