Preface

Are you tired of your normal, everyday medieval RP? Are you an enjoyer of eastern culture? Do you have an empty persona slot that you feel needs filling up? If that sounds like you, read on.

Won-ins have been around for a little bit on LOTC - but we've largely been quite quiet and inactive. But through this post, I hope to get this to change! If you're looking to get some unique family or culture RP, please read on! We would love to have you, whoever you are, in Childeok - no matter what kind of player you are.

Why make a Won-in?

While I’m sure no one would dare ask such an obvious question, I’m still going to introduce you, dear reader, to the beauty and uniqueness of Won-in culture and roleplay.

To begin, Childeok is, at present, a small community - and while many enjoy the diverse, lively roleplay, life in Childeok is much more humble, slice-of-life and wholesome. While we’re not combat-heavy or hold too many events, the sense of community and culture is stronger than anything else! Living costs are cheap (my rent is 10 mina a week!) and you get to dive deep into your character’s lore and culture. We try to be pretty cultural and you’ll get to learn a lot about traditional Korean culture - beyond k-pop and k-dramas - that still is prevalent in Korea today. But while culture is a big part of roleplay in Childeok, it’s also perfect for you if you just want some wholesome cooking, adventuring or character-building experiences! Because at the time of this writing, the Won-in are so new to Aevos, the possibilities are endless - you could be a guard, a merchant, a shop owner, a housewife, or even get that nobility status that you always wanted!

In other words, if you’re looking to learn more about Korea, play a highly customizable character, experience a unique cultural style of roleplay without being confined to your culture, or all of the above, you might just want to make a Won-in! If that’s the case, read on - because I’m going to tell you how.

Appearance

The Salamdeul are, ultimately, humans, and therefore they appear as such - but their clothing tends to be drastically different to anything seen commonly in Aevos.

Won-in clothing is colorful and comfortable, consisting of multiple loose layers. The most basic garment is the 저고리 (Jeogori), the bare lowest layer of clothing, with wide armholes and long sleeves, worn by both men and women, though women tend to wear it as more of the full outfit whereas men tend to wear it as more of an undershirt. Lower social classes such as farmers may simply wear the jeogori alongside loose pants, making for a plain, white and brown appearance, whereas lower-class women may still opt for a dress. However, the vast majority of Salamdeul, even the lower-class ones, still wear something over their jeogori.

Women typically wear a hanbok over their jeogori, a colorful silk dress that varies depending on social class. For instance, a married woman may wear a blue dress over her white jeogori.

Outfits for men tend to vary much more. Beyond the basic jeogori and 바지 (baji, loose-fitting trousers), men would wear a coat on top strictly befitting of their social class. For instance, nobles may have worn large, light overcoats that went down to their legs, whereas a commoner may have worn a simple vest. Finally, men often wore hats called 갓 (Gat) which were also representative of their social status.

Names

Much like Oyashi and Li-Ren, family names always come before the given name in Salamdeul culture. Won-in names almost always consist of three syllables; one syllable for the family name and two syllables for the given name. Family names are almost always based on Li-Ren (Chinese) characters. Here are some common Won-in last names, but feel free to look up your own:

Kim (김) - Metal, Gold or Iron

Lee (이) - Plum Tree

Park (박) - Gourd

An (안) - Peace

Choi (최) - Peak or Mountain

Jeong (정) - Young

Kang (강) - Ginger

Cho (조) - Beginning or Cradle

Yun (윤) - Governor

Jang (장) - Archer

Lim (임) - Forest

Cheong (청) - Gentle

Min (민) - Smart or Clever

On the other hand, first names are more complicated. There are two types of Won-in first names - “traditional” ones that derive from Li-Ren characters and “modern” ones that derive from direct Won-eo. For example, Metamancy’s character, Cheong-Won, has a “traditional” name - Cheong-Won. Cheong means green and Won means garden in Li-Ren - making Cheong-Won’s name’s meaning “Green Garden.” On the other hand, AstriaS’s persona, Nabi, has a modern name - “Nabi,” which means butterfly in Won-eo. Conclusion

So, where do you take it from here? Well, there are plenty of options! DM Metamancy on discord (ovo.ovo.ovo.ovo) or comment below expressing your interest, and we’ll be sure to find the perfect Won-in persona for you - whether that’s some wholesome family RP, a position in the high court of Childeok or your everyday citizen! We are looking to expand upon Won-in RP, and especially with the Lunar New Year, Seollal approaching, there are plenty of preparations to be done! I really hope that this post has convinced you to engage in a new, unique type of RP - and bring to life an underlooked community on LOTC!
