a fairly young dark skinned elf, who looks as if he grew up farming mushrooms and dwelling where the dwarfs normally reside.

Complexity is not his thing. He prefers the simpler life, living by growing and raising crops. What appears to be slow mindedness is rather a slower approach to life.
