In-Character:

Character Name: Ambrose Mearcweard

What is your Race?: Wood Elf

Biography:

Because monologues are more fun than oodles of expository text, here's a biography of Ambrose Mearcweard, as told by Ambrose Mearcweard. For your convenience, he's 23 at the moment.

“ I normally don’t talk about my past, but for you, I’ll make a special exception. I am, as you’d have probably guessed, a wood elf. Not common to find a wood elf in Oren, but… There you go.

My folks were old fashioned though, let me tell you. Were about as affectionate as statues to my siblings and me. What did they do? Well, my Pa was a hunter, like myself, and Mum was... A weaver, if I remember right. They did their best, I guess. I was a bit of a lazy child, didn’t pay much attention when Pa was trying to teach…

Heh, I’d convince my little brother Emrys to sneak off when his back was turned, and my big Sis and I’d take off while Pa tackled him, and we’d be running under the treetops, laughing our arses off, always thinking we’d managed to get out of the lesson, and Pa’d just drop down in front of us and keep talking like nothing had happened… It was a good time... We didn’t actually live inside Oren, mind; Too many people for my parents’ tastes. No, we lived a small ways out, in the pine forests.

One day, back when I was… Twelve, I think? Pa took me hunting with him, and I saw a wolf, yeah? Took Pa’s bow and shot it in the ribs, with his help of course. Heh… Must’ve been the first time I killed anything… Anyhow, when I come up to it, I see its cub hiding in the nearby den all alone, and… Well, it would die if it stayed there without a parent, wouldn’t it? So I took her home with me! Named her Theda. She’s a very good girl, she is, and she’s helped me through many a tough scrape. She has an uncanny knack for sniffing people out, especially outsiders. Of course, I didn’t always listen to her… Definitely haven’t as much as I should have…

One day I hear Pa arguing with some fancy dressed brown-eyed man about our home. The messenger had apparently come here to announce some puffed up noble decided that he owned our woods. We didn’t take to that idea at all. Heh, Theda even bit him in the rump. Well, he left, and we thought we’d showed him good… There was a raid two weeks later… Some men snuck into the forest in the middle of the night, lit the house on fire and tried to ambush us when we were coming out… Pa climbed up onto the roof, started shooting at them from there and the trees. Killed almost half of them before they broke off and ran. I guess I should be happy some part of their plan didn’t work out as they intended…

The rest of us had already clambered outside by then; when I realized Emrys was still inside, I ran back into the house to get him out, and... Well, I got struck on my left shoulder by a burning timber. Next thing I know, I'm outside again while big Sis was going into the house again to search for Emrys, and... Then the house collapsed on them. Look, please don't ask me for any more details. My little brother died in that fire, and big Sis… She got burnt so badly trying to get him and me out… If I’d been more aware of myself, and not been so stupid, then maybe Emrys wouldn’t have… At any rate, I left home the next day with Theda to track down the person responsible. I was fourteen at the time. Theda’s got a good memory, she knew which way the messenger had gone.

After about three weeks of travel, we find the man... In a port town, on a boat that’s heading off… Yeah, I might have called it quits there, but I wasn’t about to give up so easily, oh no. I talk to the ferrymen, figure out which way the boat’s headed; take the next ferry to the place. When we get there, I see him roughing up some chemist, yeah? Must’ve been quite a surprise to him when he got bit on the rump again. Shame that he got an arrow put in him this time.

Anyhow, the chemist thanked me, told me that the man took orders from some Baron over yonder that wanted something for his sleep problem. Told me if I wanted to find the fellow’s friends, that they usually knock back a few rounds at the Red Mushroom inn. So I head over and sit down in a corner and- Make it faster?

Right… The punch line is, it took me a good three years of wild goose chases to finally find the Baron. Around that time, I ran into Allen. Now Allen, he told me that I’ve been going at this all wrong, that the man I’ve been chasing has been right under my nose this whole time. He tells me he also needs this man dead, and that he needs my help.

Ask him for the rest of the details, he remembers them better than I do. What I remember is spending a good six months posing as a servant and another six with Allen, plotting. Anyhow, on the night of the deed, I took a detour on my usual route (I was a guard.) and climbed up onto the roof using some ill-placed ivy. Getting into the rafters wasn’t hard, the Baron liked skylights…

I looked down on my prey, and I saw… Well, I saw you. I could’ve sworn you must’ve heard me up there, because you paused for a good breath or two. Right after that, I see the Baron get up and walk right toward you. I didn’t know exactly what he was going to do at the time, and I figured I’d rather not find out or wait until morning for him to get up again, so I snuffed him then and there, and, well, you know the rest, you’ve been with us for a good year or so.

You know, most people think I only kill people… I’m not called a hunter because it’s a nice euphemism. I’m called a hunter because I actually hunt. Really, the better part of my money comes from getting rid of dangerous creatures that’ve been bothering people. The hunting people is… Well, it’s too lucrative to refuse.

Speaking of which, Allen’s hooked us up with another contract, and this one, it’s big. Someone up North across the sea must’ve pissed this man off something fierce, because he’s offering a tract of land and enough gold to fit an earl for whoever can kill him. It’s a toughie, sure, but I’m sure I could pull it off. Come, Keya! An earldom awaits us!”

Four and a half years later…

“Well, it’s been a long time since I’ve talked about Nympha… It’s… Not something I enjoy bringing up. Hell, last time I talked about it was with Allen before we parted ways. But, since you insist, I’ll tell you about it… As you may have heard from Keya, we never did find the man. I have to say, that town had magnetism about it… We just meant to have a short rest, and… Well, before you know it, it’s been years. I didn’t need the money anymore, anyways. Managed to run into a small fortune rather early on. Three houses, actually… Gave two of them away, didn’t need them much. Who could I tell you about? Oh, all sorts of people. Zarkaylia, Isaac, Gwynne, Edward, Jenn… Anyways, Keya’ll tell you, we settled down, built a home, started to get to know everyone, had our own share of adventures there. Heh, eventually we couldn’t bear leaving. Keya managed to make a couple friends, and, well… I found my reasons for staying. Jenn… She was beautiful, and delicate, and had such lovely purple eyes… Human, though. didn’t care much. I loved her all the more for it. Eight months ago, I… Asked her to marry me.

It was going to be a new beginning for me. I’d spent my whole life up until Nympha searching for vengeance, and a good part of Nympha, too. I was going to be a regular old hunter again. Hell, I wouldn’t even need to work! We’d both be able to live quietly, and in peace. We’d while away the hours in the shade of the cedar trees, with nothing but the birds to disturb us, and Keya’d be waiting for us in the cottage when we got back, and the sound of the stream would lull us to sleep at nights. It was a serene dream. And then… Six months ago, the undead stole it from me!

I remember that night like crystal, the night they splintered open the door and stormed into our home! The night they tramped upstairs, put an arrow in my chest and left me for dead! The night I watched from the floor as they cracked Jenn over the head with a halberd and dragged her away as the light faded from my eyes… The last thing I saw was her limp form being taken from my sight as the floor fell away from under me… But after what felt like an age, I felt cold dirt beneath me again.

Keya had been out tending the sheep when she’d seen them coming, and she had ran. Ran deep into the woods, where they couldn’t follow. When she returned to the house, she saw me, and she revived me. Nympha’s walls fared better. The town survived, but we could no longer stay. Those bandits may have been long gone, but I could still track them… And so we’re on the hunt again. That cold winter night, they stole my life from me, and I will not rest, I will not parlay, I will not stop until they have paid their debt in blood!”

Your characters ambitions:

To find Jenn, to extinguish every last undead from the face of Aegis, to return home to Oren, and then to Nympha, to see Keya blossom into a woman in full.

Out in the Wilds, your character comes across a small cottage. Outside, there appears to be an elf struggling combat with two bandits. What does your character do?

He'd climb up a tree to get a better vantage point, not to mention some more camouflage, shoot the bandits in the back, clamber back down, treat the elf's injuries if he or she had any, then go off on his merry way without touching the bandits' bodies.

Your character walks up to a shop in the middle of Al'Khazar. "Hello, my good sir!" says the shop owner. "What may I help you with today?" How does your character answer?

Ambrose shut the door behind him, nodding to the shop owner and walking over to the counter."Arrows and bitteroot, please." he asked as he leaned on the counter.

A screenshot of your skin:

elfambrosescreen.pngHopefully this is the right shade of cocoa-brown. As for the missing ears, they're hidden under his hair(Unless they stick out, in which case, I'll get to editing.)

Other Information:

Hopefully you'll not mind overmuch that my character doesn't fully conform to the Elven stereotype, at least in private. Also, if I'm missing any important events because I don't know the timeline well enough, please, tell me.

Pending.

Expand on the Open-Ended Questions, mostly the "Bandits" one. Once you do that, please PM me.

EDIT: OK, Accepted.

Just make sure you give the bandits a chance to dodge if that happens In-Game.
