The Doomherald

Vanir measures the thickness of the notes with slight amusement.  He scribbles yet another insignificant note on a piece of paper from his journal, before tacking it up with a cynical mindset.  After all, who will ever see it among the mess of papers?

The Note:

I'll play the Doomherald, if no one else can stand to say it.

Malinor is doomed. There is no question about that.  The only question was how the doom would reveal itself to us.

The current regime may continue until the nation crumbles as a result of apathy and powerlessness of both the people and the state.  The sentinels would become a mob of bandits, except that they make their own laws and hold the hollow might of the government.  Anarchy would rule, until anarchy caused the withering of what life was left.  And so the doom of the Mali manifests itself, with those who remain being shadows of a once noble race.

The humans would force themselves onto Malinor, perhaps.  The government would be a puppet state to the Oren government, and therefore Oren would have access to all that Malinor had to offer.  The Mali would be treated like dirt before the Roses and many common humans, and Oren would do nothing to stop it - after all, who could expect them to choose the well-being of another race over that of their own?  They would do only as is logical and expected.  And so the doom of the Mali manifests itself, with those who remain being shadows of a once noble race.

Say that the Delvers, or indeed any other force, was to take over.  They would take complete control over the government, and attempt to create a republic.  They would run into opposition from both internal and external forces, despite their noble goals.  They may not be perfect in themselves, nor may their goals be pure of any desire for power, but at least they would not exterminate the Mali.  Mold them, disunite them, but all with good intent.  The Mali that remained would be ripped apart by disunion, for what the Delvers would create could not encompass what the Mali are.  And so the doom of the Mali manifests itself, with those who remain being shadows of a once noble race.

How, then, can the Mali save themselves from the slow obliteration and decline of their culture?

Isolationism.
But that would not work.  We cannot remain self-sufficient.  There are outside pressures that would certainly cause tension, but the Mali who remain in and loyal to Malinor could not sustain a state nor lead a united people.  The ones who tried last failed, and left in cowardice...or perhaps wisdom, realizing that the only hope was to leave for unknown lands where they could develop and become strong on their own.

Abandon Malinor and make a new state.

Such might work.  However, the pressures upon it from those who cannot agree on the direction the government of the Mali should take and those who would not have the Mali rise above their current, desperate position would be great indeed.  Such a new and fledgling government, though certainly strong in spirit and desire, would be forced to kneel before the demands of others and therefore shackle itself to slow dissolution.

Reunite Malinor under new leadership and rise once more.

Not going to happen. The leaders who could have are gone.  I cannot think of a single Mali who I have heard of or met that can both handle the position and actually be allowed to take it by the government and the people.  Many satisfy one or two of these conditions, but not all three.

Nothing can save us now.

If you disagree, then don't bother arguing.  If you disagree, go out and prove me wrong.  Actually fix Malinor.
And, while you strive to do so, realize I am right.

No Mali here can unite us. And so Malinor is doomed.

The Bird Druid sees the note, then thinks for a minute. He smiles, then scribbles down something on a piece of paper and posts it below the new note.

"If we all believed that Malinor is doomed, well, then it surely WOULD be doomed. But many Mali have hope. This hope is what'll lead us forward, while pessimistic fools such as you only try to take us back. If you truly believe Malinor is doomed, then leave and never return. Noone will miss you, idiotic valah'mali."

He grimaces, slightly unhappy at the utter lack of kindness he used in his note, but shrugs it off, knowing that he mustn't waste his time on those who don't deserve it.

Vanir, shaking his heaad at the response, scribbles another post-script.

I am merely repeating what I see. If you believe me to be wrong, then do it. Prove me wrong.  What you respond with is assailing me - rather than destroying my arguments. You are what caused Malinor to be doomed - I would have thought it obvious that I mean for people to read this and disagree. However, reactions such as yours.. That I am the fool for saying how it shall go... You cause discord rather than acting for good.
I tried uniting Malinor with hope.
It failed. Miserably.
Now I try uniting Malinor through fear of doom.

Fear causes union with those who are strong.  Adversity causes some to break, others to become great. Malinor needs those who are great to lead.

((I'm assuming you wrote that message... I'll snip this out if you said it))

The Bird druid frowns again. He scribbles a small note down.

"I don't see how you are 'uniting Malinor.' In fact, you're doing exactly what I'm 'supposedly' doing: causing discord. Malinor is actually slowly reclaiming itself. You, however, seem to only wish to destroy any hope of salvation. How this helps is beyond me! Now please, enough with this petty argument. If you believe Malinor is doomed, by all means, leave! We'll be a great deal better off without people like this trying to destroy any chance of us rising to our former glory.

P.S As I read through your notes, I am noticing that you seem to think of yourself as a 'savior,' or 'hero' of some sort. How interesting."

He ends his note, seriously beginning to think that he's dealing with a power hungry would-be tyrant.

Vanir shakes his head as he scribbles yet another response.

Nay. I am no hero. Just a herald who knows of what is to come. Your response about Malinor getting better... Ha. Apathy will take over before that.

And by the nature of what you say... It worked.

Yet again, the Bird Druid walks over to the board. He sees a clutter of papers, and the mysterious 'doomherald''s new message. He sighs, getting out his writing tool...

"I still do not know how any of this would help Malinor."
