Issues Connecting

Sometimes when I try to connect to a minecraft server, I get this error message:

"Internal Exception: java.io.IOException: Connection reset by peer"

Can somebody tell me what this is or how to fix it? The message shows up when I click the "Join Server" button. I've looked on the internet before, and I've tried many different things. I've reopened minecraft, restarted my computer, made sure java is up to date, and tried re-downloading the minecraft file, all to no avail. I'm on a mac computer running OSX Mavericks, if that helps at all.
