A Nostalgic Player's Plea

The main part of the map is mostly protected. There are a certain amount of claimable spots or varying size on the main land besides the nation plots. We aren't going to force players to live in nations but there is a nice incentive since the nations have the largest plots. Anything that isn't a plot on the mainland will be protected land. This is to keep RP areas as RP areas and disallow huge forts right next to each other. Also it help regulate land-scaring. If the build-able land is scarred we can individually rollback those plots for re-use by other players.

As for the MCgen part of the map which makes this map quite large I assume we might tax on a few build restrictions such as you can't build within eye-sight/ certain block radius of another build.

You can have a huge map, but it's RP hubs and reasons to conregate that hold RP together.

If you give people a reason, and a good enviroment to go to, RP will never be spread thin. People group together naturally, because it's no fun being on your own all the time. Senda's stance on the Capital - you need to /give/ people a reason to be in a place.

Without a good reason or effort, RP spreads thin. It lies on you the player, nation leader or town leader to give people reasons to congregate in your settlement, not the size of the map.

Seems the Dev Blogs are getting the message across. Always nice to see, thank you.

Couple of things I feel I can shed some light on, having been on the Dev Server to witness it firsthand:

Distance between things:

This seems to be the main issue for a lot of people. Some are worried everything will be far too close to each other, while others fear the exact opposite.. with things appearing to be miles away from one another (when they look on the map ShiftNative posted.

Let's take a look at that map actually:

Actually.. let's zoom in slightly..

Now, this zooms in a tad towards the Human Lands, where I highlighted a route in white.

This route is what someone would walk, were they to travel from within the new Capital to the barren lands of the Canyon.

This route, when /walking/, takes you a minute and a half.

This is not sprinting, or even sprint-jumping. This is walking.

In my (humble) opinion, travel distances are not going to be an issue with the current spacing of things.

Building Density:

I lean towards the side of the argument that believes things might be 'too close together'.

However, I fully support the staff's call on clustering things the way they chose to do.. and firmly believe it us up to us, the players, to regulate our construction efforts, to avoid the whole "a Castle every 20 blocks".

To do this, we have the notion that nothing is built within eyesight of each other.*

(*disclaimer: In Oren, I do not speak for the other nations/races)

A simple rule, that is backed up by the placement of the protectable regions within the larger regions.. but as people can feasibly still build everywhere else (they just dont get protections) .. castles and towns could still spring up where we do not want them to.

The solution (again, in Oren) is for me, in my role as Imperial Steward, to walk around our land and take note of "unauthorized buildings".. at which point I call in the Imperial Army.. and tear it all down.

The same goes for things that are built on protected land.. where people might go inactive (as a group) and lose the protection.

Here too, it is my 'job', as Imperial Steward, to recognize this taking place.. and call in the Army to have it torn down.*

(*disclaimer: It is highly likely that some people will kick up a veritable storm of excrement over having their stuff removed, with accusations of griefing and the like no doubt leading to numerous banreports in my future. I can only smile thinly at this, knowing that the plan above is for the better enjoyment of everyone on the server, instead of 'person X', who is possibly upset about losing the cobble fort they never had permission to build in the first place.)

This will hopefully regulate things within Oren lands at least.

And obviously, I will not be doing this on my own. I will have an entire team of Stewards to help me out.

Final thoughts:

It is a new map. A new beginning for some, a somewhat tedious repetition of 'starting up again' for others.

Regardless, we are all on this server together, to have fun.

And while conflict may well arise.. and some people are, without a doubt, too agitated to see reason sometimes.. communication is what smoothes over the ruffled feathers.

Time and again, during my time as Lord Steward in 3.0, I have torn down people's homes, castles and towns.

Time and again, people got upset, having been offline for a while, only to come back to destruction.

Time and again, I have had conversations with these people, where the vast majority ended up 'seeying reason', with both of us parting on good terms.

And I will never forget the time I told Drazker and his group that "Your castle is not up to standards, we are going to remove it and help you build a better one."

Suffice it to say that, while met with initial hostility, this particular project ended up with a very happy group, that had taken to the advice and directions given and built themselves a better-looking castle as a result.

They felt immense pride and relief.. and I gained a number of new friendships in the process.

To sum up my stance:

Yes, I can and /will/ be a hard-ass about enforcing the rules we lay down in Oren.

But, as people are people.. we should never stop communicating.
