A Brother's Challenge

[Raptorious 1899]

For the first night among many, the Silver forge lay silent. No clanging of hammer on metal, no hissing of fiery steel on water. Nothing but the sound of the howling wind, blowing across the plateau. The smithy appeared to have emptied, its stocks barren, it’s mannequins stood bare in the cold as the forge’s fires died low, the forgemaster no where to be seen.

 

But Calendir sat home, in Valmir’s home, at the forgemaster’s desk, writing with his brother’s quill in his ink, a letter directed to the Sohaer and the Triumvirate. As he finished, he signed the letter with a flurry, pouring a small blob of black wax on the scroll to seal it, pressing his signet ring into it and embossing a twisting serpent into it.

 

To the esteemed Sohaer Orsino Acal’elor,

 

It has come to my attention that my brother Valmir is no longer fit to hold the position of Medi’ir and his seat upon the Triumvirate. His absence and his ineptitude have gone unnoticed for too long. His lies and his tricks to gain his position upon the council have deceived you all and I will not allow it to persist any further.

 

I, Calendir Maehr’onn, deliver this message as a vote of no confidence and a challenge to my brother, Valmir Maehr’onn, for the second seat on the Silver Council as Medi’ir. Should my brother not find himself cowering in the mountains once more, I will be awaiting his defense of his position before I present myself to all of Haelun’or.

But Valmir was no where to be found. His possessions, cleared out. His forge, emptied. He had vanished without a trace, disappearing into the wind with but a single letter, sealed with the same wax seal as that of Calendir.

 

To Sohaer Orsino Acal’elor,

 

I submit to Calendir’s challenge and I relinquish my position on the Silver Council and the duties of the Okarir’tayna.

 

I will no longer be remaining in Haelun’or.

And so Calendir stood in the Silver Council chambers, looking out unto the silver city, his platinum hair blowing in the wind. Everything was falling right into place.
