Vule'Berr

(The Clever Bow)

(A short folk story often told by the light of a campfire, originating from the Aureon Seed)

Once, long ago, Cernunnos rested on the shores of the Ocean after a long day of hunting. The hum of the waves and the warm sand soothed him, and eventually he stripped naked and dozed off. Suddenly, hours later, a large wave broke over him, soaking him and sweeping away his possessions. He darted forward, trying to reclaim his things. He managed to save his clothes and supplies. To his great dismay however, his bow had been lost.

He would require a new weapon, and only the finest materials would do. He came to Cerridwen's abode first, and asked for her assistance. She took pity on the emasculated hunter, so she sighed and bent over. She reached down into the ground and pulled out a strand of silver from deep within the earth. She washed it in moonlight and presented it to Cernunnos. He then set off to search the Great Forest to find the perfect tree. He came upon the Ame'lie of the Aureon Seed, famed for their skill in tree-farming. He looked upon the tallest Iron-Wood that grew in the center of the grove. He wrapped both arms around the trunk, and yanked it out of the ground, roots and all, leaving it perfectly intact. Cernunnos then clenched his teeth and folded and twisted the living tree into the shape of a bow. He stuck one end of the bow into a crack in a nearby rock, and strung it with the silver chord given to him by Cerridwen. Thus was born Vule'Berr. It retained the weight of the tree it had been shaped from, as well as its toughness. Nobody but Cernunnos himself could lift the bow, much less pull back its silver string. Of course, it retained more than just its physical attributes. The bow was made from a living tree, and was itself alive, with a will of it's own that only Cernunnos could tame.

Many legends exist about Vule'Berr's feats, like the story of how Cernunnos used it to create the constellations by shooting holes in the night sky, or how the arrows he fired millennium ago return to our world in the form of shooting stars.
