A thesis on vanity

-Penned by Deacon Jovarn

We the denizens of The Empire have the luck of being born into the greatest realm in the known world, the Johannian dynasty truly have built a wondrous nation with ceaseless prosperity. Though I ask my readers, are the good folk of Oren taking their wellbeing for granted? I fear our brothers and sisters, our sons and daughters, have forgotten the virtue of humility. We have forgotten to be content with what we have. We  strive towards material and selfish dreams, spending the few years we have in this God given world to increase profit, popularity and power. What good will a chest of gold do you when your day of ascension to the Seven Skies come? What good will your hundreds of admirers do you when your end eventually arrives? God's judgement cares little if you're a lowly street sweep or the mightiest King, power is meaningless in his eyes. In the end, my friends, we will lose it all.

The Godfearing folk of Oren should look at themselves and mull over the following questions. Have you roof above your head? Is the fire still crackling in your hearth? What did you break your fast with today? We have what we need to survive and to thrive already, good men and women, all we need to do is look at what we possess and appreciate every pinch of it.

I have spoken with the destitute, and the high lords of court, though from different walks of life they both have the same base needs. Base necessities that can be easily met with a hard day of work. For God gave us two hands for a reason, for us to use them well. To defend his people, to work the fields, to toil in the mine and to take care of our fellow man.

Do not misinterpret my meaning, readers, I am not saying we are to live on bread and water our whole lives, or that we should toil for naught. Humans compensate for their lack of longevity with their ability to do great things. Let us use our ability for the common good. The world is already filled to the brim with suffering and challenges, let us give one another a chance of relief when we can, as I'm sure all good canonists already do. Hoarding our goods like some petty dwarf will do us nothing but harm, for the sin of greed distracts us from piety and God's sacred laws. Make sure you go to bed next time knowing your soul is clean of greed, such sin weighs so heavily on the soul that in your ascension you'll only drop like an anchor into the eternal darkness of the Void.

Amen.
