The Pontifical Office: Prime

FOR USE IN SEMINARIES, MONASTERIES, CHURCHES AND HOMES.

Translated, Written and Collected by Father Humbert, O.S.J. Published Posthumously by Philip Pius Coppinger.

Prime is the third hour of the prayer of the Church. It is prayed about 6 hours after midnight. It contains two Psalms. Uniquely, it contains an Epistle reading.

`It was very frustrating to me that no permanent prayer rule had survived in order that we Judites might pray the Liturgy of the Hours. Therefore, the task has fallen on me, God’s unworthy Slave, to do something. This was written for the Judites, but can also be used by nuns, priests and laymen. The Hours should especially be prayed in seminaries. It can be prayed alone or together, or sung in Chant. I have left my settings of the Chants so that people may use them. Thy humble Slave in God,

-Father Humbert, O.S.J. (To Br. Gideon, O.S.J.)’

Psalm IV: DOMINE, NE IN FURORE.

Antiphon: Convertere, Domine, et eripe animam meam; salvum me fac propter misericordiam tuam. [Turn to me, O Lord, and deliver my soul: O save me for thy mercy's sake.]

C : Domine, ne in furore tuo arguas me, neque in ira tua corripias me. [Lord, rebuke me not in thy indignation, nor chastise me in thy wrath.]

R : Miserere mei, Domine, quoniam infirmus sum; sana me, Domine, quoniam conturbata sunt ossa mea. [Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am weak; heal me, O Lord, for my bones are troubled.]

C : Et anima mea turbata est valde; sed tu, Domine, usquequo? [And my soul is troubled exceedingly, but thou, O Lord, how long?]

R: Convertere, Domine, et eripe animam meam; salvum me fac propter misericordiam tuam! [Turn to me, O Lord, and deliver my soul: O, save me for thy mercy’s sake!]

C : Quoniam non est in morte qui memor sit tui; in inferno autem quis confitebitur tibi? [For there is no one in death, that is mindful of thee: and who shall confess to thee in Hades?]

R : Laboravi in gemitu meo; lavabo per singulas noctes lectum meum; lacrimis meis stratum meum rigabo. [I have laboured in my groanings, every night I will wash my bed: I will water my coach with tears.]

C : Turbatus est a furore oculus meus; inveteravi inter omnes inimicos meos. [My eye is troubled through indignation: I have grown old amongst all my enemies.]

R : Discedite a me omnes qui operamini iniquitatem, quoniam exaudivit Dominus vocem fletus mei. [Depart for me, O workers of iniquity: for the Lord hath heard the voice of my weeping.]

C : Exaudivit Dominus deprecationem meam; Dominus orationem meam suscepit. [The Lord hath received my supplication: the Lord hath received my prayer.]

R : Erubescant, et conturbentur vehementer omnes inimici mei; convertantur, et erubescant valde velociter. [Let all my enemies be ashamed, and be very much troubled: let them be turned back, and be ashamed very speedily.]

C : Gloria Patri, et Horeno, et Omnibus Sanctis! [Glory be to the Father, and to Horen, and to all the Saints!]

R : Sicut erat in principio, et nunc, et semper, et in saecula saeculorum. Amen! [As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be - world without end. Amen!]

Epistle.

C : Sancta Iuda… [Saint Jude…]

R : Ora pro nobis! [Pray for us!]

C : EGO audivi confessio regis, manducavi ducis, praedicavi in omni urbibus, et sputaverunt in vias propter sententiae meae; calcitraverunt et verberaverunt Fidei meae. Compleo quasi initiavi, alleluia! Cum These, alleluia. [I heard confessions of kings, dined with nobles, preached in all cities, and they spat at me for my views; they kicked me and beat me for my Faith. I end as I began, alleluia. With a thesis, alleluia.]

R : Deo gratias! [Thanks be to God!]

Psalm V: ECCE QUAM BONUM.

Antiphon: Deus Dixit: Ego Sum Via Veritas et Vita. Ergo, perficite Sapientia, audite Verbum Dei, et audite verbum mei, tradidi quod et accepi. [God hath said: I am the way the truth and the life. Therefore, perfect wisdom, and hark to my word, for I pass on what I have received.]

C Ecce quam bonum et quam jucundum, habitare fratres in unum! [Behold how goodly, for brothers to dwell in unity!]

R : Sicut unguentum in capite, quod descendit in barbam, barbam Horeni, quod descendit in oram vestimenti ejus; [Like the precious ointment on the head, that ran down upon the beard, the beard of Horen, which descendeth to the skirt of his garment.]

C : sicut ros Atlas, qui descendit in montem Oreniae. Quoniam illic mandavit Dominus benedictionem, et vitam usque in saeculum. [As the dew of Atlas, which descendeth upon the mount of Oren. For there the Lord hath commanded blessing, and life for ever-more.]

R : Gloria Patri et Horeno, et Omnibus Sanctis!

C : Sicut erat in principio et nunc, et semper, et in saeculorum. Amen!

PRO PAPAE (FOR THE PONTIFF)

C : Oremus. [Let us pray.]

C : Deus, omnium fidelium pastor et rector, famulum tuum, N., quem pastorem ecclesiae tuae praeesse voluissi, propitius respice: da ei, quaesumus, verbo et exemplo, quibus praeest, proficere: ut ad vitam, una cum grege sibi credito, perveniat sempiternam. [O God, the Shepherd and Ruler of all the faithful, graciously look down upon Thy servant, N., whom Thou hast been pleased to appoint pastor over Thy Church: grant, we beseech Thee, that by both word and example he may edify those over whom he is set, and together with the flock committed to his care, may attain eternal life.]

R : Amen.
