The Office

The Office of the Legate, also known as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is the diplomatic corps of the Kingdom of Balian. It is the duty of this office to maintain stable relations with foreign powers, negotiate treaties with foreign powers and entities, and to represent the Kingdom of Balian on the world stage. The Legate’s Office works closely with the Amiratus and Monarch of Balian to assure that their intentions and will for Balian are carried out abroad, and so that they are well informed of our current situation on the world stage, along with the situations of other foreign nations, so that they may make informed decisions when guiding the Kingdom.

Officers of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

  • The Legate

As head of the Legate’s Office, the sitting Legate is the highest diplomatic authority in the Kingdom of Balian outside of the Reigning Monarch and the Amiratus. It is the duty of the Legate to sit on the Duana, to aid the Monarch and Amiratus in the drafting, negotiation, and maintenance of foreign treaties and relations for the Kingdom of Balian, to advise the Monarch and Amiratus on news from across the world (good or ill), to assure the diplomatic corps is running smoothly and in accordance with the goals and interests of the Balianese Crown, and to serve as the primary diplomat within the Kingdom. The current Legate, as of 128 B.A., is Sir Marcel Vuiller.

  • The Diplomats

The foreign relations of an entire nation is a task too large for any one person to properly manage alone, thus the Ministry of Foreign Affairs chooses diplomats from amongst the people of Balian to aid the Legate in their tasks. Diplomats are generally given a nation of primary responsibility, to which they serve as the primary emissary and ambassador for all routine matters involving that State. They are expected to maintain regular communications with that nation (preferably yearly or bi-yearly) with that state to maintain relations and bring tidings from that land, with those communications likely growing more frequent during times of war, strife, or instability within their assigned nation. Diplomats may also aid the Legate on missions to other nations, and may, with the aid and approval of the Legate, Amiratus, and Crown, help represent the nation in the absence of the Legate or another higher authority.

Joining the Legate’s Office

If one seeks to join the Legate’s Office, they should reach out to Sir Marcel Vuiller in Portoregne or in his holdings in the Duchy of Aquilae. Diplomats will be interviewed by the Legate and, if approved, will either be assigned a primary Nation at their appointment, or will be given general tasks to assist the Legate and Crown around the world before being given a specific station.

Wards are also accepted by the Legate’s Office, and shall be given tasks to shadow the Legate and/or other Diplomats of the Office to gain experience in Foreign Affairs, before being promoted to a full diplomat upon coming of age or being deemed suitably proficient.

Signed,

HIS EXCELLENCY, Sir Marcel Elio Harald Vuiller, Duke of Aquilae,

Cavalier of the Order of St. Michael, Royal Sentinel of Balian,

Royal Legate of the Kingdom of Balian
