Farwell to my public life

Dear Fellow Citizens,  

 

With a heart that is as serene as it is restless, I announce today my decision to leave office and return to the life I chose before embarking on this path. A path that has seen me for a long time within the walls of institutions, surrounded by duties, decisions and tasks that have brought me face to face with the reality of our world in a deeper way than I had ever imagined.

Politics, both as a tool for change and as a stage for unremitting struggle, has demanded my energy, my time, and sometimes even my serenity. Yet in this long experience, I have learned that true wealth lies in the possibility of being oneself, of living among the people one loves and in the places that nourish us with peace and beauty. It is not in the halls of power, but in the silence of a garden, in the tranquility of an autumn afternoon that one finds true freedom.

It is not a renunciation, mine, but a return to what is essential. To my loved ones, to my family, to my earthly loved ones, to the simple joys of daily life. The days spent serving the people have been honorable, but my heart now longs for a new path. I long to breathe deeply the air of my corner of the world, to feel under my feet the soil that has seen me grow, without the need to mediate between the thousand voices of the world.

The time has come to return to my people, to see familiar faces again, and to drop the robes of leadership and resume those of a simple, middle-class, ordinary woman who embraces life in its simplest and most authentic form.

Fear not, however: my decision is not dictated by disillusionment, nor by weariness. I am not abandoning my commitment to you, but rather taking it back to the place where it can be lived with the greatest authenticity. Politics changes, as the seasons change, but my heart will always remain the same: full of hope, care and love for our people, and I am sure that my daughter, with a fresh and young mind can do better.

I thank you for trusting me and allowing me to serve. I hope that, in time, my choice will be understood as that of a woman who, having experienced the burden of responsibility, now desires to find new strength in silence, in the everyday and in the embrace of the simplest life.
