We, the Crown, wish to express our most heartfelt gratitude to Prince Sigmar of Galahar for his initiative in seeing the refurbishment and construction in parts of the old keep that once belonged to the House of Barclay before they were granted their sovereignty. Given the time passed and the changes made, His Royal Majesty finds it appropriate to now rename the castle to Kastell Zenorein and as such it requires a caretaker even if it is to remain now as a royal residence outside of the city.

As is the prerogative of the Crown alone, we do hereby appoint Prince Sigmar of Galahar @Halt as Konstabel of Zenorein to have and to hold in the name of the King and the entire royal family. King Karl IV entrusts Prince Sigmar with the maintenance of the stronghold and its surrounding lands. Having proven his mettle in combat time and time again now, it is more than agreeable that the Konstabel be given charge over any military action in and around Kastell Zenorein to ensure his and the castle’s protection. 

Let this appointment be recorded in the annals of our history, and let all subjects acknowledge and respect the authority of the appointee and their office. We thank the Knight Paramount and the Knights, Squires and Pages of the Marian Retinue for maintaining the lands for an extended period of time at our behest.

THE HISTORY

 

Known officially as Kastell Zenorein, it was not always so. Before its modern iteration, the stone keep that sat atop the highest hill in the Karoswald, the most temperate forest within the borders of Haense, belonged to the House of Barclay who were then subjects of the Crown of Haense as Dukes and Duchesses of Reinmar. After the conclusion of the Midlands War it was apparent that with the cousin branches of the Waldenian house both being successful and populaces large enough that they ought to settle their own sovereign realm and such was permitted without any fight by King Aleksandr II of Haense. As a consequence, the castle and former lands were left behind and absorbed back into the Crown’s estates. Since then it has been used sporadically and never with a formal purpose save for the brief stint recently when the fort was managed and utilised by the Marian Retinue of Knights.

 

When Knight Paramount Belisar var Ruthern once more returned the stronghold back into the King’s possession, King Karl IV saw it fit to entrust his cousin and renowned warrior, even at his young age, with guardianship of the castle. It was renamed Kastell Zenorein which roughly translates from New Marian as a play of words referencing that the keep was previously Reinmaren hence the ‘Rein’ portion of the name. In recent years, Kastell Zenorein has undergone major renovations and construction at the order of Prince Sigmar to keep it viable as a fortress and as a royal residence.

LOCATION AND USE

 

Those that find themselves deep in the Karoswald, the woods to the east of the Haeseni capital, might stumble across the imposing Kastell Zenorein atop its high perch. That location is a deliberate choice and serves a dual purpose. The first and most obvious is of course as a royal residence outside of the royal city in the Haeseni countryside. It is meant to serve as a place of leisure, predominantly by way of hunting and riding in the bountiful forest that surrounds. The King himself is known to frequent it in hopes of spying the legendary Tahala Stag once more.

 

The second purpose and primary reason for the castle's existence is as a fort of strategic importance. It lies at the top of a hill near the capital and the main road from the east of the continent that connects Haense and the majority of Canondom. Kastell Zenorein functions both as a hard to seize keep in the event that war works its way to its walls and as a place of refuge and deployment of soldiers should bandits or raiders be found nearby or driven back from the royal city that way.

POINTS OF INTEREST

Kastell Zenorein has been renovated for use at the behest of its constable, Prince Sigmar. It has rooms and ground for training in sword skill and archery, it has tanning racks and places to store carcasses, a healing bay, a garden, bedrooms for every royal family member and their guests, and finally the impressive Chapel of Blessed King Sigismund III is housed inside so the inhabitants and visitors may pray daily.

The third born child of Prinzen Josef, Duke of Galahar, and the Lady Palatine Princess Milena, Sigmar has proven himself a capable commander and warrior in his own right from an extremely early age. He has fought darkspawn as well as the Daelish in defence of Haense and its closest allies. Given his reputation and prowess, his cousin the King bequeathed him Kastell Zenorein, to maintain and govern as Konstabel.
