What circumstances led to this ban?

 

My ban was decided on the broad idea that I was metagaming Naz brands after two players were urged to publicly report me roughly a month after separate, non-hostile interactions with them. Any attempts to communicate with moderation regarding the matter were shut down, and I was only made aware that there was an issue at all when the reports were made public.

In the first report, the character was never identified to be a Naztherak by my character. While she was brought to a cell by a third party due to being suspected of a curse (in an alchemical, necromantic, infernal, etc. way), I performed a broad search of her that specifically mentioned searching the scalp, but not the hands. The reporter revealed to me in /msg that her character had visible tattoos on her hands that were found rather than emoting it to the room, and given that I was offered a hook to respond to IRP, I emoted making 'a grim look' about it as a reaction. Without my input, other characters mentioned the word ‘brand’. My persona went on their way and this was my first and last interaction with this character.

In the second report, the character in question never revealed their hands, and they were discovered to be a Naztherak through other means: A glove-wearing cursed child decides to live in a place that disallows cursed children wearing gloves, during a time when they are known to be a target of conversion. When questioned, they panicked, and using the fact that they panicked over simply taking off a pair of gloves, my character tricked them into admitting that they were a Naz. OOCly, they begged me that this scene did not have any negative consequences to it, and so I sent them on a little mission. Later on, my persona and another one tied to the reporter were discussing what to do, when a third party overheard. I stepped out of the decisionmaking at this point, and that character was banished. Afterward, I passed the word to one of the character’s allies and sent them to aid the reporter in their storyline due to the fact that I was disengaged from the scenario, which was then used against me.

If there is a third report, I’m sure the logs are much more concrete than these two, given that in neither circumstance did my character both 1. Look at a Naztherak brand and 2. Identify it as Naztherak brand. If this is true, it’s absolutely justified and I understand why this corrective action was taken.

As for how this can be prevented in the future - I understand that some of the headache could have been avoided by simply not engaging OOCly. The second report could have been avoided altogether if I hadn’t compromised and put myself in a place where another player could blame me for things that other people do down the road, and instead took it straight to a mod to ensure that the RP was simply valid. The first report was unavoidable, as I did nothing more than a brief reaction to information conveyed directly to me.

I will be extremely careful not to metagame in the future, and I'm terribly sorry for causing grief to the Naz community with my conduct. I was already pretty disengaged with this situation. I’m not going after these players, and beyond the occasional nudge to help the plot along, it was pretty out of my hands from the start.

I don’t want to say if I agree or disagree with the ban, as the actual circumstance has been left ambiguous and I don’t know if there are additional logs that contributed to my ban.

 

What motivates you to return to LOTC?

 

While it’s been kinda neat to discover that a number of players which I rarely, if ever, interact with have formed a parasocial relationship with me over demon rp, these instances are still largely irrelevant to me. I respect a lot of the writers on this server, and the vast majority of my time spent here is positive. I have things to do, and I enjoy my interactions with everyone else.
