The climate is cold here, damper than they have been used to for their past four villages. They are too many generations down the line to find the downpour of rain in the pines nostalgic, but remembering stories from grandparents, parents, some find a slight familiarity.

 

The rain continues nonetheless. A stack of towels sits next to the circular door of every home for those returning out from the rain.

 

 

Each morning, the songs of waking birds are joined by the percussion of water – drip, drip, drip, from the needles of the pines.

 

Onto the mossy, rock paths of their clearing village, puddles gather, soon turned dusty brown with footsteps and cartwheels.

Every so often, one or two of the rocks in the road seem to have moved themselves overnight, with no sign of a mudslide. And when the rain continues for days at a time– the low sound of croaking seems to come from the pavement itself.

 

Not anything that can’t be explained, of course – rocks slide about in mud, and halfling villages have been home to several hundred frogs at a time from the days of Honeyhill and beyond.

But beneath their feet, the Cobbles, Croak.

 

And the weather forecast calls for a downpour.
