"The Brave" (A short story.)

"Arise, Ser Leif 'The Brave' of House Whitewood - Knight of the Realm."

Leif remembered it all so clearly that he could recall which direction the wind blew that day, the way the trees swayed that day as he kneeled beneath the White Tree. He had always believed that nature was another way for GOD to communicate with the world, but recently he’d lost that connection. The world felt so quiet, and Leif himself felt so odd, like something was stolen from him: “Do I even deserve this title anymore?” ‘The Brave’ asked himself while sitting in his empty living room, he couldn’t admit to himself before, all of this pride he once had often hides a trembling spine.

 
He was always scared, even as a kid; being raised in an era of war took its toll on Leif’s adolescent mind, more than he’d like to admit. “No, no, I deserve this title, and I must prove to others this same truth. I set out on this journey because of my desire to protect others, which hasn’t changed even in this… uncertain time.” Leif got up from his seat, heading upstairs to open his closet, where he found, covered in dust, his old armor from when he was first Knighted. The chestplate was caved in, and the helmet had clearly seen better days. Back then, it was his pride and joy, but that didn’t matter now. Leif was not his past.

“I shall not fear death, for the love of the Creator is upon me, and the Archangel vests in me the courage to see great deeds through until my part is played. Ever that His eyes might be upon me, I shall endeavor to prove myself worthy of His love, and the station which He has charged me."

 

Those words now echoed through his mind in a commanding tone, as if challenging him. And so the now Patriarch of House Azuolas looked in the mirror, the sides of his mouth curling into a smile, a rarity these past few years, “I shall live up to what I swore.”
