THE SIN OF KAZ’ULRAH

THE SPIRIT OF CREATION

THE OBVIOUS

It is not lost on me that the Irongrinder Clan was perhaps the most stalwart of foes of Kaz’Ulrah during the War of the Beards. Unlike every other clan, not a single dwarf of my blood defected to join their ranks after they ultimately overthrew Grand King Fenrir. In fact, records show that many Irongrinders helped the Empire of Man lay siege to their city and guided their engineers in tunneling operations to bypass their defenses. But with hindsight, I think of this with great remorse, for they were perhaps the first to venture down the path of the Rhun, in their own twisted way.

While it is true that they committed countless atrocities against their kin, the slaughter of the senate comes to mind. Their method was violence, but was their cause not just? On the surface, they called the rule of the grand kings stagnant and corrupt, which they were. They raged against the political maneuvering of the Runelords, which they were guilty of. And publicly, they called for a new era for our people. Did Lord Kerwyr believe these things? I very much doubt it. Like many others, they wished to rule the dwarves, but they were willing to use violence to get it.

THE UNKNOWING PATRIOTS

I find it laughable to make excuses for the horrors committed by the frostbeards in those days. The slaughter of the senate and the halfling feast will weigh Kerwyr and his ilk down in their journeys to Vuur’Dor. But now, centuries later, I see the spirit of the Rhun in their actions.

When the WORLDMAKER looked down on the world he created, he thought it beautiful. He spent countless ages wandering its mountains, caverns, forests, and deserts. But eventually, he grew frustrated with the stagnancy. So he created his first children, Krug, Malin, and Horen. These three destroyed, hunted, and warred, but they could not truly create as he had. So his final son was born upon the anvil; it was URGUAN who was born to continue the WORLDMAKER’S spirit of creation.

Now I ask, did these sons of URGUAN not do as our noble father did? Did they not see a stagnant world and desire change? Is it not in our very core nature to honor the spirit of the WORLDMAKER? Is this not what the Frostbeards did, unknowingly of course, when they fought to destroy a kingdom of lethargy and stagnation?

WHAT DRIVES STAGNATION

ᚹᚺᚨᛏ × ᛞᚱᛁᚢᛖᛊ × ᛊᛏᚨᚷᚾᚨᛏᛁᛟᚾ

As we established, it is in the very core of our nature to desire change upon the WORLDANVIL. So then, how was it possible for our ethnostate to fall into such stagnancy and decay? This is a question that plagues me, with no clear answer I can divine.

Let me be, perhaps the first of my clan, to acknowledge the sins of my ancestors. It was at the hand of the RUNELORDS that our tribe fell to civil war. But still, how did they become so stagnant in their positions? Was it the immense weight of greed that weighed them down? What spirit could have corrupted them to such madness?

There may truly never be an answer to this dilemma, but I have one possible answer.

THE OUTLAW OF AMBITION

ᛏᚺᛖ × ᛟᚢᛏᛚᚨᚹ × ᛟᚠ × ᚨᛗᛒᛁᛏᛁᛟᚾ

When the WORLDMAKER created the Brathmordakin, he first struck KHORVAD. In KHORVAD, the WORLDMAKER poured his endless ambition of creation. He sought an assistant to help him shape the world upon his anvil. And together they created great things. But unlike his father, who embodied every possible spirit, KHORVAD was purely a manifestation of ambition. And this ambition eventually led him to be corrupted.

And now, rightly, KHORVAD is known as the great betrayer. But why must the spirit of the WORLDMAKER in which he embodied also be cast aside? Why do we make only the faintest effort to call ambition a sin when so many of us practice it openly?

Perhaps if some of our leaders, myself included, had more ambition, we might still reside in our halls of stone today.

THE SIN OF CREATION

ᛏᚺᛖ × ᛊᛁᚾ × ᛟᚠ × ᚲᚱᛖᚨᛏᛁᛟᚾ

At last, we return to the title of this treatise. I ask you now, what sin did the dwarves of Kaz’Ulrah commit? At the surface level, any dwarf can point to the sin of their kin-slaying. But was every action they undertook tainted by their wickedness?

Obviously not. Many dwarves lived, worked, and thrived within their halls of stone as they had for centuries prior, without partaking in their evils. And it was these truehearted dwarves who left Kaz’Ulrah and formed the Confederation of Hammers when their wickedness grew too much to bear.

But of all their faults, how can you blame them for wishing to create a new realm from a broken one?

Signed,

Darid Irongrinder.

P.S.

I can hear your rumblings. Call me crazy, but I hear from below how you mock me for being nowhere to be found. And it is true, my rucksack is filled to the brim with ancient relics, and I have no desire to lose them to loose men of the streets.

But to make it clear, should ANYONE wish to speak to me, beard to beard, on these issues, send me a letter and we can figure out a venue for a debate!

Spoiler

Once again, thank you for reading my rant. I know it is written horribly but it is what it is. I gotta let the VOICES out of my head somehow.

Also to all of my haters, I love all of you. I want to give you a big smooch *mwah*.

Especially you @PanicZealot

The Clan Father of the Frostbeards, Dugan Frostbeard, skimmed through the missive while sequester in his cave upon the spine of Azuras. His cold, steely eyes latch onto only one phrase, selectively ignoring the rest of the words upon parchment.

"THE UNKNOWING PATRIOTS"

"By me beard!" The Great-Great-Great Grandson of the great Paragon Rhewen spoke, "This may be the first time the Irongrinders have called us what we are, true patriots of the Sons of Urguan!"

The Frost Dwarf reads through the ramblings of the Irongrinder, a good way to pass the eternity of time they had.
