Minecraft 1.3. - Thoughts?

Recommended Posts

As most people will know, MC 1.3 is currently in the works - there's already been pre-releases etc out. I was wondering what people thought of the various features that're being introduced?

For those who are unaware of what's being introduced:

  • The chances of slimes spawning in super-flat worlds has been decreased. Thank goodness!
  • Right clicking on a powered minecart in creative feeds it coal.
  • Dispensers now deploy boats and minecarts onto their respective rails / water.
  • Brewing stands + Enchantment tables can now be shift clicked to add items quicker.
  • Shift clicking also now adds armour quicker.
  • The "pick block" button now gives the block that you click. ( If mob is clicked then mob egg is added).
  • Items now stack themselves if thrown onto the ground individually.
  • A demo for non-premium users has been added.
  • A bonus chest option has been added to world options. The bonus chest is spawned nearby your spawn location and provides some starting kit.
  • Single Player Commands is implemented into vanilla Minecraft
  • Language files updated.
  • Items can be deleted from the hotbar by shift clicking on them in creative mode.
  • Some bugs have been corrected.
  • Editable books have been introduced, see here: http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Book_and_Quill
  • Wooden slabs for each type of wood added.
  • Leather is needed for crafting books now, presumably for the wrapper.
  • Silk touch now allows you to receive ice blocks and glass panes when broken.
  • Ice doesn't turn into water in the Nether anymore.
  • Chat options have been added to the Options Menu:- Chat Opacity, Chat Disabling, Chat Colours, and an "only commands" mode.
  • /help has now been added to vanilla Minecraft for use with the newly implemented Command Prompt.
  • Tools have infinite durability in Creative.
  • Minecarts and boats are destroyed in one hit in creative mode, instead of having to spam click them.
  • Livestock can now be walked through, and don't push the player around inside crowded pens.
  • You are no longer slowed by flying through water in creative mode.
  • Bonus chests aren't included in hardcore mode.
  • Server commands now appear in italics in multiplayer.
  • Saplings are now called their correct name, e.g. pine sapling.
  • Debug Screen has been changed:- removal of graphs, coords now rounded to 5 digits, walking speed, flying speed and 'ground' are now in it.
  • Single-Player now runs as a local server.
  • Came doesn't pause when you enter your pause menu, or any other form of men, e.g. chests, chat, signs.
  • Servers can now set their own texture packs which the client can download from in-game.
  • Wooden tools are now able to be used as materials for cooking in furnaces, in the same way as coal.
  • Cocoa beans can now be obtained by breaking jungle leaves.
  • Villagers that you spawn with 'spawn eggs' get a random profession.
  • Hardcore mode is now available for multiplayer.
  • The splash screen that says "Mojang" - now only appears for 1 second, instead of the older 3 seconds.
  • Each wooden log and plank type is named after it's tree. e.g. Pine Wood, Spruce Wood.
  • Cocoa Plants can now be found inside jungles! See here: http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Cocoa_Plants
  • There is now 'large biomes' as a choice for world generation.
  • Stone bricks and sandstone now have names for their specific types, e.g. Broken Stone Brick, Mossy Stone Brick.
Cocoa Beans have a new texture!
  • Cookies give you two hunger points instead of just one.
  • Ender chests have been added, that allow you to have an inventory that is constant between all ender-chests in your worlds.
  • The new emerald ore has been added, which drops emeralds. This allows for villager trading. See these links: http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Emerald | http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Emerald_Ore | http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Villager
  • Buckets are now stackable!
  • Snow is now accessible via the Creative Mode inventory.
  • You can change the direction of a minecart by pressing your directional keys.
  • NPC Villages have different styles depending on biome, I'm presuming viking style in snow biomes, and desert themed for sand, etc.
  • Stars are now slightly smaller and brighter.
  • Gravel no longer looks crap!
  • The options menu has been improved.
  • Pyramids are now generated in your worlds.
  • There's a new type of golden apple, made with Blocks of Gold. It gives you Resistance, and Fire Resistance for 5 minutes, as well as the 30 second regeneration.
  • Sandstone stairs have been added.
  • Dispensers now dispense water and lava sources if buckets are shot from them.
  • Boats now go through lilypads and don't break, however the lilypads can now break instead.
  • /seed displays the seed of your current world. Quite pointless considering F3 tells you.
  • Passive mobs can be easily moved by just walking into them.
  • Creative Mode has a new inventory screen, featuring categories for each item type, and a search bar!
  • There's now a "Monster Egg" block, that when broken spawns a silverfish!
  • You can now get chainmail armour in-game, without fire.
  • The enchantment system has been rebalanced.
  • Smelting with a lava bucket in a furnace now leaves you the bucket to be re-used.
  • Jungle Temples have been added.
  • Tripwires and tripwire hooks have been added, as a kind of redstone activation trigger.
  • Emerald Blocks have been added, the equivalent of diamond blocks, gold blocks and iron blocks.
  • The adventure gamemode has now been added. In adventure mode the player can't place or destroy an blocks, however they can trade with villagers, interact with blocks and damage mobs.
  • Silverfish Cobblestone and SIlverfish Stone Brick have also been added.
  • Rain now slowly drips through leave blocks.
  • Nether portals can now spawn Zombie Pigmen, albeit rarely.
  • Cauldrons can be filled with water if it rains.
  • Blocks in your inventory have been oriented to the right instead of the left.
  • Half slabs can be placed upside down when you look at the upper half of the side of a block.
  • Endermen are now tougher.
  • Ender chests now spawn inside the homes of Blacksmith villagers.

Which of the features are you excited about, and which are you... myeehhhhhhhh about?

Personally, the only feature I actually dislike is;

The Ender Chest - I feel it's just not a good idea. I don't like how you can just make a chest that's accessible anywhere. It ruins the fun of having to store your things in chests, and travel with it as far as I'm concerned. I won't be using a ender-chest anyway.

The only thing I care about

Modding API.

To be honest, with that, everything else that the plugin comes with can go, because we can re-create it.

Endless posibilities.

ME GUSTA.

I for one am glad that they are finally expanding upon what already exists, which is what they should have done a long time ago. What I mean by this is sandstone stairs, chainmail armor being craftable, broken and mossy stone bricks having their correct label, etc. In my personal experience I found that many features that were added could have been expanded upon further than what they were. Another example would be NPC villages. I originally felt that they could have done so much more with them, and now they finally are (trading).

This is spectacular. It will be much I a help in Minecraft as a whole and he server itself. One question. Will we use editable books as is or make a Bookworm plugin to modify editable books?

All I can think of is "Checkmate Atheists!"

Delete that. Now.

@Philip

Delete that. Now.

EDIT: If it was really considered that offensive, alright. Note it was in quotation marks, I said 'Joking aside', it's a reference to a popular catchphrase, and was used because the meaning was it was a "godly" update.

Nothing against Atheists, I'm a rather open minded guy who was one for quite a long time. No offense was directed towards anything, group, person, at all. It was supposed to be a joke that would be a small chuckle and perhaps it didn't come across as well as planned.

I apologize for anyone who took offense, that comment did not portray any of my feelings, it was meant as a joke, and I will try not reference anything, however humorous and lighthearted it's intent was, if it can be interpreted as differently. >>

Sorry. Philip or anyone else, if you still have a problem, please PM me to get that straightened out.

Back to topic, and my previous question, how will editable books be used in LotC? Modifying plugin, keep with bookworm, etc.?

My thoughts:

Sandstone Temples - Explosions, kewl.

Trading with Villagers - "GIMME ALL YO STUFF FOO'!"

Growing Cocoa Beans - Cookies for DAYZ

Sandy Villages - Meh

Writing Books - Write all them books in sngleplayer that no one will ever read Q_Q

Ender Chests - Teleporting chest inventories..... Wut.

Stackable Buckets - THANK GOD

Different Slabs for different Wood - Noice

Sandstone Stairs - Kewl.

Single Player Commands - Now all we need is built in WorldEdit.

Emerald Ore - I don't really see a use for this...
