Bishop John of Darfey

w4PW4.jpg

I begin this chronicle of the House of Horen in the year of our lord 1419. I, Bishop John of Darfey, have been charged by his most illustrious majesty Godfrey, King of Renatus, Duke of Ardania ''Crown Lands'', Marna, Balamena, and Somerset, Count of Saltridge, Alnfayat, Alzlam Alardy, Hrq Rmal, Garath, and Gwent, and Most Holy King of the Land, with chronicling the House of Horen ordained rise from true bloods to their rightful place as Kings. Happily do I embrace this task given by his most glorious highness, but before I begin the chronicle in earnest, I shall endeavor to layout the state of our most magnificent kingdom as it stands today, so that all our posterity shall know of its glory.

Titles held upon entry to the Kingdom of Heaven: King of Aaun, Earl of Jrent and Galorgan

Successor: Edward I

As our records show, the House of Horen began in earnest around the 643 which was well into the reign of our ancient benefactor King Horen IV of Aaun, Earl of Jrent and Galorgan. Little remains of this man that helped lay the foundation for what has become a great power throughout the land, but what little is known paints the picture one would expect. Every record available speaks of King Horen IV immense piety. He is known to have begun the tradition of each ruler of House Horen to personally raise each of their children. By all accounts this was quite the feat for the King who is rumored to have fathered 8 children, sadly for those of us today, however, only one child managed to continue the bloodline of the ancient King, but the virtue, skill, and excellence of his majesty Godfrey I is illustration enough that the bloodline of Horen IV remains vibrant to this very day.

As far as his more "political" accomplishments, little evidence remains. We do know that at least one of his sons was invested as Bishop of Monm in the County of Jrent thanks to the fastidious record-keeping of the Bishopric. We also know, from the records of House Organ, that the County of Galorgan was conquered by King Horen IV sometime around 656, but it's unclear whether King Horen IV, or his illustrious successor Edward I, actually took control of Galorgan, but I feel comfortable assigning the honor to the illustrious beginner of all that was to come, and since God has ordained the rise of House Horen it only makes sense that the founder of the greatest dynasty seen in ages should also have an equally grand beginning. The records are unambiguous, however, that Horen IV, King Aaun, Earl of Jrent and Galorgan went to the House of the Lord in early 656. His successors, however, would outdo anyone's expectations for the, at the time, House of Horen and demonstrate to the world that God has anointed a new champions of the light.

Daniel I

Few people are as celebrated throughout our history as Daniel I Horen. Daniel has been referred to as 'the Great', 'the Pious', and 'the Just', but the one epithet that seems to consistently be attributed to his great majesty is 'the Wise'. I haven't been able to deduce precisely when his majesty Daniel I was born, nor who his mother was, but, given his meteoric rise one can only assume his birth was assuredly ordained by the Almighty. Upon becoming King in 698 on the death of his father, the King Daniel immediately looked around Oren and saw it was a land besotted with inept, corrupt, and impious rulers. Daniel, himself a devout and righteous man, saw this corruption and wept for the people. As a righteous ruler cannot stand idly by while people are oppressed by the wicked and sinful, Daniel Horen did what any noble ruler would do...he set about to change it.

The first few years of Kings Daniel’s reign were uneventful politically speaking. The King, rather than haphazardly expand, spent much of his time undoing the ineptitudes wrought by the branch of House Organ that had previously ruled the county of Galorgan. He spent considerable money on improving and expanding the castle and surrounding village at Taerwynt which helped lay the foundation for the impressive capital which we had. He also established the mail system still in use today, as well as laid the foundation for the superb system of roads and bridges that help us to traverse the sometimes harsh terrain of the former kingdom. While King Daniel was busy improving his holdings, as any true and noble leader should, the then Duke of Jrynydd, Malfruic the Cruel decided to expand his own realm. Jewys belonged to the now defunct, disgraced, and extinct House of Rafal, whose only notable contribution to history was their penchant for cruelty and ill-governance, both traits which almost saw the entirety of Oren lost to Orcs. Luckily for us, however, King Daniel was not ready to allow Oren to fall into sinfulness or provincial status. Over his protestations that he was not worthy, he was invested as the rightful Duke of Heubarth. Despite his reluctance to accept the title, which stemmed mostly to the Kings undoubtedly great humility, King Daniel began working with a gusto. The county of Darfey, of which I had the privilege of overseeing as Prince-Bishop, had been conquered by the vile Rafals of the Duchy of Jrynydd around the same time as Galorgan was added to the demense of the House of Horen. King Daniel knew that the county rightfully belonged to the Duchy of Heubarth and it seems obvious given his pious nature that he would do anything he could to wrest control of the county away from a people known to be so sinful and wicked as the Rafals.

War was declared sometime in the year 706 and lasted about a year according to various parish records from both Galorgan, Darfey, and Jrent that detail the raising of the levies. The end result was never in doubt when his majesty King Daniel emerged victorious from the battle and threw the Rafals out of Darfey for good. It should be noted that in an immense act of piety the generous Daniel the Wise set the land aside for use by the church. Though not officially transferred until several years later the Bishop of the Abby of the light, what used to be the capital of Darfey, ran the county for all practical purposes.

Surprisingly enough, details remain vague on the specifics of the next decade. Throughout the next decade King Daniel managed to unite the provinces of Jewys and Jrynydd under his control. Immediately thereafter, people began to proclaim him the true King of Oren. Daniel, however, was a terribly pious man as well all well know. Hearing this clamouring he sent out riders with the proclamation that he would not be a King in Oren, for Horen is the King of Man and there can be no pretenders. The illustrious Daniel I was therefore crowned King of Oren after much pressure from the people. King Daniel I had done what no man thought possible only 20 years before by uniting the whole of Oren under one banner instead of it being divided under petty Kings, Dukes and counts.

King Daniel continued to rule for another perhaps 15 years before finally being called to the Lord's service. The remaining years of his reign were spent arranging marriages, establishing the royal courts that are still in use today, and further expanding settlements. Saint Daniel abdicates his Throne to his son before going on a Holy Voyage to the north. But his seneschal Pampo Perea seizes power and usurper the Throne from the proper heir.

The Battle of Stormridge

OBWny.jpg

The Battle of Stormridge stands as one of the most decisive battles in the history of House Horen. Edgar of Horen went into the battle as the commander of the Aaun forces by merit of his posting as Marshal of Aaun and son of King Charles I of Aaun. He was sixteen, and untried in battle. Though he had every reason to fail he ended the threat of continued Grwund presence in Aaun in one battle.

The morning air was crisp but not yet cold, perfect to calm Edgar. At the moment the only sound he was hearing was the rasp of the whetstone along his blade. The sword's edge was sharper than it ever had been and probably couldn't get any sharper but he continued pulling the stone along the blade over and over again. Soon the predawn mist would enter his tent and make an surreal sight, though no one would be in it to see. In the mist's absence firelight filtered through the room glinting off the metal of his armor. 'This is it, I will be leading men to battle soon. Men will fight and die for Aaun, for my father, for me.'

"It is time to get ready." Thelric said as he walked into the tent. Edgar looked up and smiled "Yes I suppose it is. isn't it? Thank you, my friend. I suppose Bishop Estmond is trying his best to avoid doing so isn't he?"

"Yes I suppose he is." Thelric replied chuckling. "Just remember he has twenty two years on you, he should know how to hide better than you know how to find him."

"And to think he is one third of what passes for nobility from Tontham. I shall have to go and win this battle in order to save our dignity."

He looked at the vast array of men and banners before him. Slightly over ten thousand men stood ready to follow him into battle and die to save their homes. "During times like these men need few words to push them forward. Some of you are from Jrent and if we fail today your families will be the first to have to remember what Grwund rule feels like. Others, like myself, don't have to worry about that, our families are far away. But one and the same we all fight for our homes, for our King, and for Aaun. May we send them to hell where they belong and long may our banners fly over these lands." His eyes swept over the faces looking at him and he hoped he was showing the same grim determination he saw. With his last words he walked to his council to make the final plans as his men started forming up. He was pleased to have Thelric there with him, as the Marshal for the County of Tontham he was Edgar’s second in command. The other faces were much more foreign to Edgar, powerful Earls and Counts expect for two other faces his Father and his Brother. "The plan is rather simple if I do say so myself. I will lead the center over the main ford and Charles , my liege, will lead the left over the ford about a mile up the river. Eadwin will take the right over the bridge down river. If the enemy's center collapses, our center will swing to help the left and then will help the right. If any of our force starts to break retreat over the ford or bridge as that will constrict what they can do."

Edgar marched in the half light of the dawn watching the tendrils of mist forming and slowly grow above the grass. The lions flanking a tower would be the first banner to engage the enemy. This would be the proudest moment of his life, the men of Tontham leading the entire army of Aaun to fight Rolnd Grwund. Edgar’s tabbard was slightly different from his banner, it was quartered in blue and red for both his house and his title. His shield had the coat of arms of his house. The fact that these thoughts were entering his head as he marched was slightly amusing. The archers and light infantry broke rank and started moving ahead to screen the advance. Then they hit the murder zone. Arrows started falling around them as shouts of "Shields up!" started raising through the ranks. The water was icy cold as the army marched through it, in some places it was knee deep and was slowing them down quite a bit. As the far side got close Edgar realized something, Rolnd Grwund did not place his shield wall on the far edge of the ford, he had it placed back quite aways. Edgar called for his men to form up after the bridge and then came the surge, heavy infantry charging the wall with mounted Swordsmen fanning out behind and starting to move to encircle the Grwund forces. His shield hit another as his body was pushed into the Grwunden. The man never stood a chance as Edgars sword came down on his head, the spear the Grwund had been holding did not have room to move in these close quarters. Then there was another one and another and another. Edgar’s awareness closed in until the only thing he was aware of was the current opponent and there was no shortage of those.

The tip of his sword hit the ground and he struggled to try to raise it for the next attack, if he couldn't raise it he would be dead but the sword would not budge. Then it dawned on him, there wasn't a next attack yet. Shaking his head he looked around, Rolnd center was breaking and routing. Mass carnage was all he saw, dead and dying all around. Then he saw a small group of lightly armored horsemen. "To me. To me." He shouted at them. "Send messengers to my Father and Eadwin to see how they are doing."

"Yes, m'lord. Right away."

"How did we do?" Theof asked wearily.

"Their dead and wounded are estimated at almost 5,500 while ours are roughly 4,200. In percent that is almost 8 men dead for every 10 that went into battle while we have closer to half that. It is believed that they are heading roughly in the direction of Burdy probably hoping that Gintsting can rally some support for them there."

The King nodded at this report. "Well Edgar, it seems I made a good judgement when picking you for the Marshal of my forces. Though I received a disturbing report. Richard Of Larton has attacked and is besieging Galorgan as we speak."

The Battle of Laur

The Battle of Laur is considered the ending of the Invaion of Larton, Even though Edgar lost one of those battles he still ensured the end of the Lartinon threat just months after doing the same with the Grwund threat. Harold’s reward would start an enmity between them that would last the rest of Harold’s life.

The blazing fire kept most of the tent warm but if one got too near the edge of the tent they would be reminded that it was early spring. Edgar smirked as he watched the Siley mercenaries try to shuffle closer to the fire without setting their gaudy clothes on fire. “We are almost Tontham, as the army draws close I am going to be taking a small detachment so I can spend time with my wife while the rest of the army continues moving toward Galorgan.”

“Are you denying your liege his due by closing your door to him?” Came the sole reply to Edgar statement.

“Of course not, my liege. I did not extend the invitation because Tontham is not prepared to hold the King’s Court. A more pressing matter is Tontham is not far from the Lartinon army. If they should send reinforcements Tontham is one of the castles that may come under siege and they need their larder as full as possible in case the main army is tied up elsewhere.”

“Very well. Now tell me about these mercenaries you insisted we commission.” Charles said, sounding quite bored. The King looked bored, truth be told, lounging in his throne, sword propped against it. He was clearly a man of action, and being on the march was not action in his eyes.

“Yes, the Siley Spears.” Waltheof began trying not to sound resigned at having to explain again why he thought these men should fight as the center of the Aaun army in the upcoming battle. “Well firstly with them we look to outnumber Richard by almost two to one. Also while our shield wall is a tactic that can easily stop mounted Swordsmen I am not sure it can stop the mounted knights Richard will have, these long spears that the Siley have should do the trick.

kXLBV.jpg

The day was bright as Edgar looked out at the Mies River. His scouting parties should be back soon with the last news before the army marched on Galorgan. Once again he brought up the mental picture of the area both from memory of the area it self and from the maps he had been pouring over for the last month. He would use Thorn Island to cut off Richard’s retreat and hopefully crush his forces against the Castle there. The sound of a galloping horse broke him out of his thoughts.

“We have a problem, a very large problem.”

“What do you mean, Thelric?” Edgar asked quizzically.

“Richard’s army has moved south. They are in Aaun. However another Lartinon army, numbering at least 5,500 is gathering at Laur to intercept us. I don’t think they realize we are on the Mies.”

“Right, ok here is what we do. Gather all the men now. We attack before dawn tomorrow.”

It was clear that Bishop Ebbon of Fecmar only learned of the large Aaun army after it started marching toward his camp. The battle was very short, starting two hours before dawn and ending at dawn. A few Lartinon noblemen used their personal retinues to mount sporadic resistance to the Aaun but most soldiers were left orderless and leaderless. Of particular note almost all of the Lartinon archers were cut down by a charge of mounted Swordsmen. It was only a stroke of luck that Ebbon had placed his command tent so near the ships that had allowed them to disembark and so the nobility was able to flee the battle.

“That wasn’t a battle. That was a massacre.” Edgar was pacing a ridge near the battle site. “We only had slightly over 8,000 men while the Lartinon’s number 6,000. We lose less than a quarter and they lose almost 8 in 10 men. Now we march to Aaun. Engage Richard and end this farce. The Lartionon’s gave us more trouble and we all know how much they dislike being on plains.”
