Master Shipwright

Recommended Posts

A man sits atop his cart, by the port of Toov Avev. The cart, though apparently old and weather-beaten, is of marvelous make, and bears an inscription on the side, appearing to be the makers mark. The mark is present also on the handles of the tools stacked carefully beside a bedroll in the cart, sharp axes and knives, some saws and a fine wooden drill, handle and bit well-worn steel. Upon closer inspection, the man appears old, at first, bleached hair unkempt and long. The cart contains no raw logs, and little of wealth past the fine tools can be seen anywhere about the man, who’s pointed ears reveal his elvish descent.  On the bench of the cart, beside the elf, lies a stack of flyers and posters, neat script flowing across the pages. The flyers can be found around the major cities of most of the realm, the posters hung on notice boards and pinned to the doors of important military headquarters, namely the Order of the Red Dragon, and the Order of the White Rose. A few notes can be found inside the Teutonic Keep, apparently pinned to walls and posts by arrows fired from the nearby mountains.

Should you pick up a flyer, it reads:

Should the simplicity of this flyer bore you, then throw it away, for it is of a nature well worth the effort to a man or lady of good means or need. My name is Zevandir, and I am come from Aegis, throughout the storms faced by the people of our worlds, few have made it to Anthos, but I am one. Though I never saw the lands of Elysium and Kalos, I made brief stop in Asulon, before resuming my journey.

Let me explain. I am a master sailor, and it is oft said, in the waters of the far North, that a man is only as good as the vessel he commands, and she him, and that he is never a true master of the ship until he knows her, properly. In this I find great truth, for the first ship I ever sailed upon was one I knew not, but the master, aye, he was a captain of great worth and wroth, and his ship alike him in this. He was brave and a master of himself, his great beast quick to do his bidding. I am come to knowledge of the intricacies of the art of a shipwright, and hold myself a master of this art.

By now you begin to wonder at my purpose, though inkling must be given, I present to you, he who honours me with his attention, the chance to call yourself master of a means to conquer the very seas, and with its power, your enemies. Should you wish for yourself, or your kingdom or army or family, a ship worthy of your might, or a lesser craft in which to ply your trade, I am the elf to shape it.

Though the ships I serve are p’ haps the finest in Anthos,my true calling is one of war, and should you have for yourself a ship in need of a captain of vast experience, I am the raider. Though my greatest offering is, for a man of your stature, the building and captaining of a ship, that will without any shadow of doubt crush beneath it the fragile leaves of your enemy.

For you, a ship will be crafted, simply send a bird to me, Zevandir, or seek me out by the docks in Toov Avev, for there I shall await purpose. Pray, should you arrive and find me gone, I shall leave birds here, who know how to find me. Treat them well or may the sea drown you.

The note is signed, with his name, and a faint drawing of a ship beneath it, almost too light to see.

*Melunz comes across the flyer on his way to a manor, he picks it up sniffing it carefully before flipping it over and calling his sparrow, he writes a note and sends it to zevy "Mi wunt azh boat, lik lungboat dat peep bub'hozh, yub relli hozh boat dat am hozh"

Zevandir smiles at the note from the apparent Goblin. He fetches a fine bird from it’s perch at the back of the cart, a large
sea eagle. Quickly, he pens a brief reply, and encloses it in a narrow leather tube, sealing the end with blue wax. The note reads

“Attach a reply to this bird, with the details of where you wish to meet me, so I may build this knar you seek. The cost is 600 Mina, though allowances can certainly be made for the inclusion of any materials and provisions you wish, noble sir. Enclosed within this note is a sketch, of my design for the ship. You may ponder the size and aspects, so we may alter it to suit your purpose.”

The note is signed, in a light green ink. Zevandir smiles as he tosses the bird into the air, but makes no move to yet leave his own perch by the docks, breathing in the sweet sea air as he awaits further replies

* Melunz reads over the note, nodding a few times before smelling the salt on it.. Licking it a few times before gulping up the entire note forgetting what it said, suddenly remembering he scribbles down a note sending it off on his sparrow. "Yub! Dat am hozh, hozh prize. Dah zhip am relli big agh hozh prize wi a meet zuun ukeh yub yub yub"

*A women walks up

"Do ye have any previous examples or scetchs?"

Zevandir smiles at the woman, and from beneath his seat on the cart, draws a chest, the size of a large tome. It is of carved dark wood, bound by heavy iron strips, and closed with a strong lock of steel, complicated and expensive. Faint runes glow on the chest, and more on the lock. He produces a key, from deep inside his wolfskin, and quickly unlocks the chest, removing several sheets of very fine parchment, and a few of fine white leather.

Selecting a particular one, Zevandir proffers it to the woman, careful not to let her touch it, however, the dark green ink depicting a ship.

20130513111435.png

"This ship, although small, is one of my finest concepts, an idea that outweighs its style. For this, is the design of a craft I recently constructed for my Goblin associate  Melunz, for use in his trading and other...enterprises. Its true genius is that it is a single handed sailing vessel, but can easily accommodate up to three sailors, and carry many more and their equipment if functioning as a transport over a short distance." Zevandir looks around, and hushes his voice slightly. "However, with a skipper and a deckhand, with three lightly armoured, or even heavily armed, fast assault troops, say, the core of your military, the vessel is lightning quick, providing, assuming the skipper and deckhand are navy marines of some sort, five elite soldiers silent and fast access to any port or ship or river, capable of sacking a village in the time it takes to raise the sail."

He produces another picture, the same boat, but altered.

20130513103016.png

"Look, the ballista on the bow, this my friend is the weapon of the age, this craft, and it is cheap, I sold the last for barely 500 Mina, and took less than a month (1 elven day) to complete it. I believe my associate is even now at sea, possible with another goblin, for he demonstrated surprising speed in learning the simple controls, a hand on the main winch and another on the tiller, is all you need to guide the vessel from the Uzg to Oren."

Flicks through the papers, presenting some more.

20130513100633.png

"The smaller cousin of the previous craft, slower, but smaller, and more easily handled by a single man."

20130513104931.png

"Melunz' ship itself, though none of my drawings do it justice, the craft is far better presented in person, the paper fails to capture its lines."

20130513100554.png

20130513100811.png

"A hull and another ship, the hull is perhaps one of my finest works, though it remains unfinished in a shipyard, and again, I am no artist. However, the ship you see here was lost at sea, one of my first, a vessel of incredible endurance and capacity, I once ferried fifty soldiers and their arms and armour in one only slightly smaller, on a journey of over an elven week. THough that was in lost Aegis, and few remember. The vessel is one I remember well, and could construct with great ease."

"Ah!" He holds forth another sheet.

20130513100756.png

This one, friend, is one I glimpsed in my travels, and it captured me, though I have never attempted to create it, I could with ease, for it is a simple design."

As he reaches the end of the pile, he remembers something, grins, and quickly tucks all but one paper back into the chest, drawing a final two.

"I craft not only assault ships and those of clinker huller longboat, these are two of old design traders of unmatched ability."

20130513101022.png

20130513100535.png

"These cogs are capable of high amounts of cargo, or again, in times of need, could be used to ferry troops, for they bear three decks and room for officers and nobles, I once got horses into a ship of such design, though the sling use was of poor quality and I would not like to try it again."

As he begins to repack his parchments, he espies the one left out, and, as if undecided, makes to show the woman, however, decides abruptly at the last not to. At her look of confusion, he explains.

"This ship, this design, is one that will rule the seas, mark these words, and only once she floats, ready to crush all opposition, shall the world see it. Mark the name Owl, and should you see an Owl by the water, or on a ship, choose not to threaten them, for this ship, would end your days."

Though he is careful, you may catch a glimpse of the craft, and should you, you would see triangular sails, and a long, sleek longboat, of apparent speed, bristling with armament and menace. ((I would show it, but, its too damn special and I won't risk any spoilers or design theft xD))

((Please don't copy any of these designs, regardless of claiming you could see enough to produce your own, honestly the drawings are crap and you wouldn't be able to produce an accurate replica, this is intentional, to prevent copy and because LEGIT none of these pictures do the boats justice.))

After a thought, Zevandir sends Fugnuz the goblin to attach copies of the drawings to as many posters he can find, who promptly does so.

Zevandir also instructs him to include a rough price reference, "500 Mina for a smaller craft, around 1500 Mina for the largest ones."

Zevandir grows grim, and his face closes, noting a past comment of the woman. He spits at her feet, "Begone, leave me in peace while you hack at wood till it floats, then try to sell it off a ship." At tr last word, his lip curls in disgust, and he goes back to sketching a new sail design.

Jericho wonders up to a poster, then biting his tongue for a moment before beginning to laugh. Clapping and bending forward in the process, he begins to shake his head, appearing overwhelmed in amusement. Slowly he calms down, slapping his knee once as he straightens up and lets out a large exhale, his eyes flickering open as he wipes his eyes. Then speaking to himself in his average young, mocking, and tenor tone. "Elves!" he muses first, then beginning to pace back and forth, his glare locked on the poster as he examines it closer and to it's farthest details. He lets his head hang to the left for a moment before continuing in a low mutter, "Even the ships I make are better than an old elf from Aegis.. As old as my Great-Grandfather Skyler.. Heh. Haha, a ship must be smooth.. ..Sharp!" he begins waving his hands about, running them down the siding of a nearby wooden house as he critiques the wood within his mind. "..Graceful and silent.. Brilliant and brisk." he raises his voice somewhat, almost flinging himself about now. "The ship's quality.. Haha, is a result of love, prayer, and true faith under Aeriel..!" he rambles on, then spotting a few around him as he notices his own scene, immediately halting in his words, his mouth agape for a moment before flicking off some lingering dust from his fine, yet rustic and well used, leather vest. Swallowing beforehand, he motions an awkward but confident wave towards them and turns quickly on his heel, beginning to stride away as to make his farewell.
