The Wizard lowers the corpse into the grave, cradling it in two palms. It is so, so small. Porter’s brothers stand at the edge of his grave, brave as he was in death, front of the audience. Faces immobile. Unscathed, unlike Porter, by flame. His cousin, shy, younger, wracked with grief, mourns from the back of the audience. Nearby, the Union take off their hats in respect -- they wonder, if it were not for Porter, they would have faced the same fate. Chef Moe, his colleague of a lifetime, places a tiny flower; a blue forget-me-not, into the grave with his paws. And the Wizard gently pushes the mound of soil she had dug up over the grave, laying Porter to rest. Never will he dance again. Never will his feet find a rhythm on the wooden tables of the tavern as he serves ales. Never will he take to the stages of the cities across the world. But the fires are out. His brothers, his friends, his family, all wood and straw and wool, are safe. And a stone is placed to mark a Hero’s grave. ........
