yeah you have to hand it to him, two years of sustained support and trying again and again—dedicated, consistent, reliable. those are great traits to have, clearly someone who wants to better this server.

Hi folks, Congratulations and warm welcome to @Spoopy_Duck, our newest administrator! He will be handling the moderation team and related affairs, try to give him a few days head start before drowning his DMs. :) I heard he has dogs so unfortunately that puts us at 2:3 on cat to dog admins. Good luck Spoop! - Max & Admins

Hello, Josh3738 is departing the admin team. LotC is stable, but that doesn't mean we can't invest in a clear vision. We can rally behind a common cause, but we're never going to unite for long over what bothers us (except maybe admin inactivity). We’ve been discussing heavily what kind of foot we want to start off in 2026, and this is not the one. We’d like to close a turbulent chapter on LotC’s administrative history. First, we’ll be reversing the recent changes to the mod team. Second, we agreed a few days ago on a Community Admin and we’d like to welcome @Smol to the team. We hope that together, we can create a unified vision built on trust, accountability, and most importantly, the betterment of the server. We are stewards to a monument of player creativity and passion, we will build upon it moving forward. Sorry for the chaos today.

The way I see it, it is a noble decision. All of us on the team, and especially Hogo, understand that if metaplay continues to run wild we are sitting on a pile of shit. It's the spontaneity and autonomy that we earn with our good nature, our self-restraint, and our creative integrity that allows this place to be worthwhile. The way you make your friends along the way speaks to your character. Metaplay is obnoxious, manipulative, and harmful. It is not right to make "friends" here through joint scheming. There is a wrong way to play this server. It has no winners. Thank you Hogo.

Hey Shiny, the facilitating or gathering of roleplay is not only wonderful for you, but for all of us. We allow that explicitly in the new ruleset. But, whether metaplay is cooperative or antagonistic—it endorses metaplay. It plants the seed for more metaplay. And this conduct is not only rarely done in goodwill, the spirit of roleplay, or responsible cooperation—it is genuinely hard to do so in a positive way. It is just not genuine roleplay. It's faked, and any goodwill feels similarly empty. (for example, take how you feel if a scripted event does not allow you to be creative in your roleplay, but strong arms a certain outcome) I would say reminding someone about an eviction notice (the cd's are inherently an OOC thing by law of our rules) does not relate to roleplay as it's mainly a mechanical requirement. What happens before a character is spawned into the world is also an OOC consideration—like how we write our applications (backstories) prior to entering the world of RP. It is clear to me these examples are in good-faith, you are safe. :)

Everyone, We’re adding a new section to our Player Conduct Policy. Here it is. It is our duty to protect young folk from malicious behavior on this server. In parallel, we recognize that adult content is not inherently harmful. Adults engaging with mature content in their own spaces is a natural facet of life and we aren’t looking to police what you do in your spare time. With that said, underage members must not be guided/coerced into this content. We find that advertising or otherwise distributing sexually-explicit content in the LotC space falls dangerously close to that territory, and that neither we nor our community are comfortable with this activity. If your LotC-related space has a sexually-explicit section gated behind thin barriers like “roles”—please take this opportunity now to eliminate these areas. Then, please do your part—ensure minors don’t find their way into sexually-explicit servers.

Hi everyone, @The60th is parting ways with the Administration. This weekend we reviewed a substantial amount of evidence regarding a particular case and his involvement—and we found the roots are far deeper than we anticipated. We're sorry it came to this. We don't see an alternative, and I believe it is the right path to heal and restore community trust. Thank you, Telanir & the Admin Team

I've read a lot of posts in this thread and much of it is genuine, high-caliber feedback. Thank you for that. I made the mistake not to to point this out but please focus on the state of the server and not individuals, for example "your idea made me ill" is not a valid reply lol There is no need to defend your opinion, a well thought out reply will do that more than hitting reply on someone else's musings. Thanks for reading through my obligatory janny insert, I hid a bunch of posts, if yours was hidden it will be discussed anyway, admins can still see them.

How do we balance this with red-tape? Giving notice…is that RP-friendly, or dynamic…or even interesting? And, suppose we do remove ladders, then the problem of perma-locked settlements returns—gates down, 24/7. (my problem here is not that players behind gates are safe, it is that it's that community interaction is (literally) gated, and new players be sad for sure). I liked the beginning of this map a lot, gates were wide open come-on-in—but flat turning off conflict would be worse. What else can we try?

Yeah, I waited a whole week to make the thread before I realized there won't be a "good time to post" 🤔

Hi, I've been hearing some chatter regarding server direction recently—I thought it might be helpful to get ahead of this. Does anybody smell smoke, or are we happy with our experience? Since there is a smattering of topics I figured I would keep this mostly unfocused. The question I would ask: are we doing enough to defend our position as the premier roleplay server? • Mission Statement

It took proper humility to not just reflect on events but also to take personal responsibility and affect change. Thank you for putting in this time to address real issues. When I think about what happened, I think that the question comes back to how we define administration. It should be synonymous with leadership, especially in matters of community safety. It should mean rigor and swiftness in administrative processes and nobody left behind. So we sat down and chatted. We reviewed our dusty admin protocol and rewrote it. And, finally, each of us committed to adopt the new one. If you are interested, you can find it here—and we've kept it publicly accessible, just like before. I believe these three updates will lead to significant changes at the top-level, and I want to thank everyone who made a statement and inspired us to think about building a better future proactively, and not reactively. Now, I'm going to put the rosy glasses aside and discuss precisely what we mean in our new policy. We will work retroactively. AKA, this policy does not begin today—it begins in 2011 at the dawn of LotC. This is not just a bold move, it is reckless—and necessary. We know that some parts of this policy we may have to roll back, amend, or place limits on. So, we have one request. Do you have something worth reporting? Please do it now. In my 12 year history on this server, I have yet to see a circumstance where holding onto evidence led to a better outcome for victims or for others. We review anonymous reports sent to [email protected] too. You can reach out to any admin as well to submit a report and, if you prefer, we can keep your identity a secret from the rest of the admin team. Please pick the option where you feel safe and we will accommodate you. One last point, there is one offence we are not prepared to judge retroactively and that is haphazard slur use or spam in private mediums. I am not pointing to outright discrimination or targeted use—but plain choice of words. Moving forward, this means we are free to be more rigorous and swift in our rulings, including evidence shared from private mediums. Until you can be proud to be a part of this community, we have work to do. -Max

nice, you should collect an FAQ as you go along and post a step-by-step thread. would love if this picks up steam, been thinking about mpm lately

Lol that's weird, if it sent through it's not supposed to show that. Will fix that lmao

Hey, I deleted your favorite message. Instead, you’re going to start seeing some lovely little asterisks. Don’t want them? Type this. This will only affect your account, others will still see asterisks in your messages if they haven’t toggled it. You, however, won’t see them on any message! The filter has been updated to be far less intrusive on roleplay and moderator privileges adjusted so they can't accidentally enable serverwide forced message filtering…lol. Happy roleplay!

How do you feel lotc culture has changed in the five years you've been here? And a more boring question but more to your experience…what should we be doing (or not doing) to make friendships and connecting diverse communities easy and natural?
-
A lot of people wouldn't put in the love and time into this server that you do, if they were paid $1k for it. It's just not the kind of passion that can come from hamfisted self-indulgence. Correct me if I misunderstood, but you're saying the reason for your motivation is ultimately rooted in meaningful connections you share in the community—especially the kind where you and your friends can nerd over initiatives/concepts and get excited together over doing something worthwhile (else why would you still be here). What in your mind should we be doing to encourage organic friendship and bonding on this server? Or at least, what can we move out of the way? By the way…I wanted to add I loved your triad of map related thoughts (map concept, region post, and discussion on map storylines), thanks for leaving nuggets like those around.

Whether you are staff or not—thank you for your time. Staff Conduct Some basics & a warm welcome | Nov 22nd, 2022 Hi, welcome to staff. Thank you for putting others first. I hope these few words will help you. Success rests in the richness and fullness of the connections you make. Make no mistake—you are not here to push papers, fill forms, or cap quotas. Structures, roles, and policies don't exist. Only people exist—and so does what they do. Volunteer each minute responsibly. Guard your free moments, work on things you find meaningful, and reject those you don’t. Leave every player better than when you found them. Remember your roots in this community; you were and will always be part of it. Be there for people who need you; highlight the best in players, and let them bring out the best in you. Embrace new & young players (and their mistakes too)…you were there once. As part of the staff remember the most important fact: you aren’t the fun or the maker of the fun; rather, you facilitate a space for fun to manifest. The fun that is already there—the fun that each player has every day. So consider this: that the best staff experience is invisible. It's when people don't need you…but want you there. It bears repeating, 1) put your full heart in what you do and reject busywork, 2) make friends and stay grounded and 3) stay ambitious and in good health—IRL comes first. That’s all—welcome again & have fun! Cheers, Max & the Administration What We Stand For Our Mission Statement Our Community Guidelines Our Roleplay Standards Our Safety Policy Admin Protocol Ethics Please exercise caution when it comes to private matters. Confidentiality is your responsibility; especially when it comes to sensitive discussions and people's personal information. Please respect player privacy—if you don’t have a reason to be watching their RP then allow them their space. Same applies to reading player logs: if you aren’t investigating on an official matter, it should be off-limits. Please honor player effort. Your power is for you to guide and serve your community. Feel free to decorate the interior of your home with LC or warp to your friend—but don’t skip great efforts or attain an unfair advantage. For example, avoid warping others, don’t tp for purposes of villainy or PvP, or use WorldEdit or other powers to the benefit of yourself or another party. Conflicts of Interest Our staff members are leaders in the community, not only in their roles on staff, but often within the ranks of various community groups such as realms, lairs, and more. Although we broadly trust our staff to recognize and avoid conflicts of interest between their staff duties and personal ties, there are some areas where despite the best intentions, conflicts are unavoidable. To help avoid potentially adverse situations, we have the following policies on community leaders being on staff: Definition: What is a position that acts as leader? A position that acts as leader is the direct leader of a realm, or a position adjacent to the leader such as consort, heir apparent, or viceroy, only when they consistently act in place of the direct leader. If this applies to a particular position is under the discretion of the team’s administration. Administration Administrators may not hold any position that acts as leader of a realm, vassal, or lair. In addition, they may not hold a position equivalent to consort, heir, viceroy, leader of the primary faith / culture in the realm, military leader, head diplomat, or treasurer within a realm, vassal, or lair. Management Team managers (or similar positions) may not hold any position that acts as leader of a realm. In addition, they may not hold a position equivalent to leader of the primary faith / culture within a realm. Moderation Moderators may not hold any position that acts as leader of a realm. Technical Senior technicians and members of the implementation team may not hold any position that acts as leader of a realm. In addition, they may not hold a position equivalent to treasurer within a realm. Other Technical team members may hold such positions at the team admin's discretion. Story & Community Story and Community team members may hold a position that acts as leader at the team admin's discretion.
