As a side note I’m one of the people primarily responsible for assisting with the Lore we were presenting for the loremag and I’d like it noted I’m a certified Range Safety Officer and helped teach people on a range for six months of my life I think I’m at least somewhat qualified to discuss firearms, their manufacture, and their use. The same way you stop someone with a crossbow or bow, you stab them with a sword or shoot them yourself. They’ll more than likely shoot you, but if you’re wearing virtually any protection you’ll be fine minus probably a bruise or a broken bone or two, and then when they start trying to reload you stab them. We have an entire structure devoted to that happening. You need to have people who actually know what they’re talking about steer the discussion so we can cut out the bullcrap. I understand your concern with powergaming and steering the lore somewhere you don’t want it to be and that’s totally fine it’s a valid concern. I just think we’re getting ahead of ourselves and speculating about something that might not happen. I personally have faith in the LT to be able to say “how about we don’t have sniper rifles and lever actions and revolvers”, their techlock works even now. The techlock won’t be removed, the boundaries would be pushed just a little bit farther to give everyone the opportunity to RP something new and unique to their nation states. Also as a side note I’d be far more concerned with someone propelling a fireball at my head to light me on fire and choke to death than someone shooting me when I’m in full armor from a musket, in fact I’d rather take a shot to the stomach from a musket than have a fireball thrown at me EDIT: I said the S word and that’s a no no changed it to crap

Well the problem was more that it became cheaper for a centralized government to just arm people with guns instead of having feudal lords train for years and years and years on horseback. Centralization and changing political climates resulted in the loss of knights, because they weren’t economical in any capacity for a modern government at the time. If you took a knight and plopped them down 1800 on a battlefield you’d still be hard pressed to kill them. Logistics killed the knight, not the combustion mechanism of the firearm. That changes in the late 1800’s when you get smokeless powder and guns can have WAY more pressure in the chamber and bore. There’s this misunderstood notion that there’s a huge leap between the effectiveness of a matchlock and a flintlock, when in reality they would’ve used almost identical powders. In fact most of the early flintlock guns were just matchlocks that were refitted to take a flint on the cock.

The LT have regularly retconned things that start getting out of hand, that was the entire original point of the Techlock. They have the authority and power to reverse it if they feel like people are abusing it. We have an entire system of moderators whose job it is to catch people and prevent them from powergaming things. Not to mention the massive leap you have to make in metallurgy and technology in order to actually get to a point where you have things like lever actions, spitzer type ball ammunition, and even tube loading firearms

That’s not why knights became extinct as a social class and it isn’t why warfare was changed forever, muskets and armor coexisted at the same time and armor of the era proved effective against them

For the record, I’ve been working with the LT actively to discuss and come up with ways to make Muskets something fair and scalable within the context of LotC and roleplay as a whole. The making of them would be a feat that you’d need an application and a teacher for There would be limits to how many you can make each week (all firearms would have to be signed by LT for approval through the use of RP and then logged somewhere) And I cannot stress this enough, Muskets of any sort are not as strong as you think they are. There’s a strong case to be made as people have listed before that things like crossbows and muskets coexisted on battlefields specifically because of the fact that unless you have a lot of gunpowder and the technology to make it, you won’t receive an intrinsic benefit of using it over a crossbow. The end result is effectively the same with either of them. Naturally I vote yes

To make the argument that certain fundamental rights of all humans regardless of ethnicity, locale, religion, or gender do not apply because the specific medium by which you exercise those rights is not intended for said expression of rights is simply defeatism. A Reponse to Yurii 14th of Harren’s Folly Dearest members of my flock, I offer you my sincerest apologies for the rambled ravings of the monk under my care, Yurii of Haense, who without a doubt would prefer his former pontifical name of Siegmund I. Tragically, his advanced age has made him radically senile, incapable of understanding events in chronological order, and therefore has become so prideful that he dares to challenge the sacred traditions of the Holy Mother church that have withstood since its establishment with His Exalted Horen. We shall start from the beginning, and attempt to dissect and understand the poor invalid’s argument in an effort to properly realize his supposed grievances. He declares myself an Anti-Pontiff. This is an unfortunate and ignorant understanding of the events as they have occurred, and allow me to explain. Yurii’s thought process stems from a mistake that he had made during his Pontificate. For you see, a child of the Emperor Aurelius Horen had charges of murder against a member of the church brought upon him. Now, the Horen obviously did every effort he could to defend his child, and as such no punishment was brought upon him. This did not sit well with Yurii, who instead opted to excommunicate the boy. Now as we are all aware, the entire Pertinaxi line has been declared anathema by myself, so I do not blame him for utilizing his right as Pontiff at the time. However, the problem stemmed from the fact that he did not discuss this with his synod, and instead allowed the punishment that should have been served unto him brought upon the church as a whole. This was not an action done in solidarity with the agreement of his bishops, but a wanton, angry response to a situation where he was unable to be taken seriously in a matter that he deemed adequate. In short, his behavior was childish. Indeed it was so, for the only evidence of such actions were the testimony of a single person: a pagan of Rosenyr. And so, Aurelius had decided it was his authority to remove him. He declared himself a holder of divine knowledge (a choice of words that are still being discussed within the pontifical administration today, but is nevertheless declared heretical hence his excommunication), and pressured the church into removing Yurii. However, this is something that cannot be stressed enough, the bishopric decided that it was time to remove Yurii. Had they felt confident in their pontiff’s ability to keep them safe, they would have ignored the call. Aurelius’ heresy was simply a convenient way for them to remove Yurii. If you disagree with me, you can speak to Pontiff Emeritus Pontian II, who was one of the bishops that voted to remove Yurii. And, might I add, it was a unanimous and public vote that all throughout the realms of man were able to attend. The result was not to excommunicate him, nor remove him from the clergy. Rather, he was stripped of pontifical titles and relegated to the task of monkhood. And now we know the history of the affair, and why my poor monk is acting so childish. Let us assume that he truly believes that I am the Anti-Pontiff. This would mean that the synod that voted me in would be unable to be legitimate, and the synod before, and so on and so forth. This creates an error in logic, for Yurii has decided, then, that every pontifical crowning of every Horen after Aurelius are declared null and void. He does not recognize the child emperor, then, and yet listens to their every word in an effort to regain the power that he once held as the Vicar of GOD. Yurii continues then, after this, to argue for the actions of a priest. More importantly, he states that I personally besmirch the holy name of Everard. Well, I can see why to a man who has thrown away with all longstanding tradition would think so: it is not in his best interests to acknowledge the rule of canon law that have existed since the Holy Mother Church’s founding, because it would invalidate his claims to the pontificate. Now onto my last point before I finish this response off with a reading of the scripture. He repeatedly states Godfrey III as the ruler of man. As we have discussed with his argument prior, to my pontificate being invalid (which it most certainly isn’t, he is simply frustrated in his old age), then Godfrey’s claim to the throne would be invalid. For surely his forebearer was crowned by an anti-pontiff, which means that Godfrey’s progenitor was not the true ruler of man, which means that there is no line of succession for Godfrey to be a part of! What a thought. But we must be patient with the elderly, for I am sure he forgot his argument halfway through, had to lay down for a snooze, and then returned to complete his response. So naturally there would be some holes in his argument, as Yurii is not properly fit to even write anymore. I shall leave the faithful with my story, and the compassion that I have shown for man. Misunderstandings and taking executive action are necessary components of the pontificate. As the Vicar of GOD, there are times where I cannot get advice from others, or I must ignore someone’s objections to an action that I am about to do. However, I must face those consequences with a grace and civility that is above what is expected of the common folk. There was a problem with a band of Owynists, Prince Yury, and many other people who are now my bitter enemy. Yury had killed a member of my clergy, a monk no less. This was a problem, and I was thinking of a proper response to the situation. However, my indecisiveness had cost me dearly. Two rogue Owynists had decided that I was bending over backwards to support the Renatian rule of authoritarianism. As such, I had both eyes gouged out, and my neck cut. I suffered for my actions, and even now I suffer from my actions in the excommunication of the Pertinaxi line. And they are my responsibilities alone to bare. Yurii had not done that in his entire pontificate. In fact, I doubt he did anything during his time as a clergyman. But he is old now, and evidently no longer able to do even the minimal work expected of him as a monk. So to Yurii, I give you this: And it came that one of Horen’s people, a man called Saul, had ignored the warning of Julia, and left the camp. And he wandered into the iniquity which Iblees wrought, and coveted the gold and sweet food, and spoke at length with the Denier. And Iblees was cunning, and guised Saul with the skin and clothes of Horen, and sent him into the camp with a message. He is no longer authorized to hold sermons, or be of any example of religious advice for those who seek comfort in the Canon. His name shall be stricken from all papal records, and history will, in time, forget his name. I pray that he come to his senses eventually, and once more finds the light of GOD that he long since abandoned. “It is glad to know that one would so boldly declare me an individual who would bend the knee to Man, when it is obvious that my issues are much higher than such petty squabbles. Evidently, you are not above that fact, so allow me to explain it in plain, simple Common that you would be able to understand. I shall let it be known now that those who do not wish to seek redemption shall surely find themselves removed and declared Anathema. But this is a trifle matter at best, you lack the virtue of humility, whose importance was outlined none other than the Patriarch of all Humanity: His Exalted Horen. The fault, and namely this business of “whataboutism” that you are so fond of serves only to prove my point of your ignorance to the matter at hand. It is most unfortunate that you do not share many of the intellectual and spiritual qualities of Julia, the Matriarch of Man (I elaborate on this as it appears your understanding of the scripture is so limited that I must explain figures of the Canon that even the most illiterate of children know by heart). More importantly, I would urge you to seek refuge in the Canon, and not throw away the very structures by which it was created. Our Holy Church was started by His Exalted Horen, and he passed down the responsibility of teaching the Canon to his successor, and his successor to his successor’s successor, and so on and so forth. In your hubris you have decided that His Exalted Horen was not of sound mind and body to create this structure, and ensure its longstanding understanding of his word. You insult not the Church, but the very notion of Canonism itself. That being said, I pray that you find your way out of ignorance. There are many women who are capable of reading, doing complex mathematics, and engaging in thoughtful discussions about scripture and its longstanding effects on society as a whole. However, I am unaware of how Pertinaxi sympathizers treat their women, perhaps they like them this stupid. Which is indeed a shame, as even His Exalted Horen dare not chain down Julia to the shackles of his preconceived notions of Womanhood. But I digress, I will keep you in my prayers, in the hopes that you seek fulfillment in the Canon through your own internal monologue, and not in the way that Harren had to understand the Word of GOD (which, I will remind you, was by Owyn’s sword). Dearest members of GOD’s flock, I am pleased to announce that I am recovering as best as I possibly can, given the circumstances of the situation. I have no one but GOD and the trusted men who recovered me to thank for that. It was indeed a degree of divine intervention that His Holiness, Pontian II was there to manage my wounds as best he could. Despite my lack of sight, I am more than capable of hearing. And it was brought to my attention recently of a misunderstanding associated with the Holy Church and who have been frequently been called, in common parlance, Owynists. As you are all aware, there were indeed two men affiliated with that belief structure who came and attacked me. Though I cannot stress the importance of the word two in that previous sentence. Evidence and investigation are the foundation of any discourse of crime, and indeed both must take place before anyone can make a sound judgement of a situation. This is all the more true for any child of Man. For indeed, if we are to declare one heretical, or one to be coiled within heathenry, we must have a proper trial. GOD gave Man a mouth with which to speak, and arms with which to bear a sword in His name. And I do believe that there is no coincidence in the mouth being closer to one’s brain than the arm. We must use words before we resort to cutting people down for supposed crime. A man’s first defense should always be his words, and every man must give the accused the opportunity to speak in his own defense before convicting him. We must think logically and critically for a moment while you process this information. The Owynists have many a number within their ranks, surely enough to kill me while I am unguarded. If this was part of some grand scheme, or some larger plot, then surely they would have sent more swords to ensure my death. But, damning as it is, only two knocked on my door that fateful day. I was fortunate enough to have their response to the previous papal letter read aloud to me, and I gave it some thought. Even better, a brave man representing them came to speak with me (might I add he had numerous guards with him, who could have easily struck me down). And the issues were clarified, and it is the understanding of this Pontificate that their response was true. Thus, I have come to this conclusion: The punishment of two Owynists does not extend to the entire group, and any crime of heathenry has been since deemed untrue. The group commonly referred to as Owynists are hereby pardoned from any recent allegations of heresy. Going further, I declare the Owynists to be proper followers of GOD and His Word. This pardon shall remain in effect for as long as I draw breath. They are free of any charges of heresy, and will always be welcome to participate in religious services with the rest of GOD’s flock. As such, any man claiming to persecute them on the unfounded grounds of heresy shall be, in turn, charged with the Fratricide of Krug.
